Apple Watch Ultra 3 and later can use satellite features; Apple says Ultra 2 and earlier cannot. If you have a compatible model and ordinary calling or texting cannot connect, Emergency SOS via satellite can help you contact emergency services. Set up your emergency information, learn the controls, and check regional availability before relying on it off-grid.
Check whether your Ultra supports satellite
Satellite features require Apple Watch Ultra 3 or later. They are not available on Apple Watch Ultra 2 or earlier, and an accessory cannot add the missing model support. Apple’s current watchOS 27 satellite feature guide and regional support pages list eligibility and requirements. Availability can depend on your country or region, the watch’s country of purchase, and in some places the watchOS version. Check Apple’s current guidance for your exact model and location before you leave coverage.

Know which satellite feature to use
Satellite functions serve different purposes; casual contact or location sharing is not a substitute for emergency help.
| Feature | Purpose and recipient | Plan and privacy notes |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency SOS via satellite | Contact emergency responders when an ordinary call or text to emergency services cannot connect. | Apple says it is included for two years after activation and can be used without an active carrier plan. Emergency messages are encrypted in transit, then decrypted by Apple for delivery to the relevant dispatcher or relay center. Apple and relay providers receive location information for routing and responder assistance. |
| Messages via satellite | Send texts, Tapbacks, and emoji to friends and family where available. | Requires a network plan, according to Apple. iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted. Apple describes this as casual communication, not an emergency service. |
| Find My location via satellite | Send your location to Find My where available. | Requires a network plan, according to Apple. Location sent via satellite is end-to-end encrypted and inaccessible to Apple. |
Apple identifies Globalstar, Inc. and its affiliates or third-party network operators as satellite network providers. Availability is not universal or uninterrupted. For details that apply to your region and setup, consult Apple’s satellite feature guide and the relevant Emergency SOS via satellite support page.

Prepare your watch before leaving coverage
- Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts. On the paired iPhone, open Health, tap your profile picture, then Medical ID. Add relevant medical details and emergency contacts. Apple says configured Medical ID and emergency-contact information can be sent during an Emergency SOS via satellite session.
- Try the Satellite Connection demo. Use Apple’s Satellite Connection demo outdoors in open terrain to practice following the watch’s prompts. The demo does not contact emergency services. Apple describes the demo and its use in Connect to a satellite with your Apple Watch Ultra.
- Make the controls easy to reach. Add the satellite control to Control Center and/or add a satellite complication to your watch face. Keep the Messages app installed if you plan to use Messages via satellite.
- Prepare Messages via satellite if you intend to use it. Apple’s guidance says to turn on iMessage beforehand and notes limits on which prior contacts can be reached by iMessage. Requirements vary with region, paired iPhone, software, and carrier or network plan; check Apple’s current Messages via satellite instructions for the applicable details.
Use Emergency SOS via satellite
Treat satellite SOS as an emergency fallback, not the first choice if a normal connection works. First try calling the local emergency number or texting emergency services. If the call or text cannot connect, use Emergency Text via Satellite and follow the watch’s prompts:
- Choose Report Emergency.
- Answer the emergency questionnaire as accurately as you can.
- Follow the on-screen directions to connect with a satellite and keep the watch positioned as prompted.
- Continue messaging the responder and provide any requested details. If you want, choose to share information sent to emergency services with your emergency contacts.
Apple says the session can transmit your questionnaire answers, location including elevation, battery level, Medical ID, and emergency-contact information if configured. If a session has started and you no longer need help, do not disconnect; message the responder to explain that assistance is no longer needed. See Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite instructions for current steps.

Get a satellite connection
Go outdoors with a clear view of both sky and horizon, then follow the watch’s positioning prompts. Wear the watch normally: Apple says you do not need to hold your arm up. A connection can take time. Apple estimates that sending a message takes “30 seconds or more” in ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and horizon; under some conditions it can take several minutes. That is an estimate for sending a message, not a guaranteed connection or emergency-response time. Apple explains connection conditions in its satellite connection guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Obstructions: Dense foliage, hills or mountains, canyons, and tall structures can block or weaken the connection.
- Conditions and location: Wet conditions, high latitudes, and satellite or network conditions can interfere or prevent a connection.
- Nearby devices: A nearby iPhone in Airplane Mode can make satellite features unavailable.
- Timing: Connection and response times vary. Satellite messaging is not as immediate or predictable as cellular communication.
Keep the siren distinct from SOS
The built-in Ultra siren emits high-intensity sound patterns intended to attract help. It does not contact emergency services and is not satellite SOS. Apple describes the siren and other watch safety functions in its Apple Watch safety features guide.

Check the rules that apply where you are
Apple’s included period for supported satellite features is two years after activation; the company says Messages and Find My satellite sharing require a network plan, while Emergency SOS via satellite does not require an active carrier plan. Terms, availability, and technical requirements can change, so verify them in Apple’s current support information before a trip.
Apple’s statement is direct: “Messages via satellite is designed for casual communication with family and friends, not for emergency situations.” Use Emergency SOS via satellite to contact emergency services.
