It depends on which Samsung watch you own. Galaxy Watch4 and newer models run Wear OS and can install Google Maps. The Gear Sport runs Tizen, so it cannot install the current native Google Maps watch app. On a Gear Sport, you can try mirroring phone-based Google Maps directions with a compatible third-party app, but the phone must stay involved.
Check which Samsung watch you have
“Galaxy Watch” covers two different platforms. Galaxy Watch4 and newer use Wear OS; the original Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active models, Galaxy Watch3 and Gear Sport use Tizen. That distinction determines whether you can install Google Maps directly.
| Watch | Operating system | Native Google Maps watch app? | Practical method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear Sport | Tizen-based Wearable Platform 3.0 | No | Phone navigation mirrored through a compatible third-party app |
| Original Galaxy Watch | Tizen | No | Phone navigation and, if available, a compatible Tizen app |
| Galaxy Watch Active / Active2 | Tizen | No | Phone navigation and, if available, a compatible Tizen app |
| Galaxy Watch3 | Tizen | No | Phone navigation and, if available, a compatible Tizen app |
| Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS models | Wear OS | Yes | Install Google Maps from Play Store |
Samsung identifies its newer Wear OS watch range in its Wear OS Galaxy watch support information. The Gear Sport specification identifies its platform as Tizen-based Wearable Platform 3.0. App availability for older Tizen watches can change independently of Google Maps support.
Use Google Maps on Galaxy Watch4 and newer
Google says full turn-by-turn navigation on the watch applies to Wear OS 3 and newer. Wear OS 2 behavior is more limited and relies on Google Maps on the paired phone rather than the newer watch experience. Menu labels can vary by watch and software version.

Install Google Maps
- On the watch: Wake the watch, swipe up to open the app list, open Play Store, search for Google Maps, then tap Install or Update.
- Or use the phone: Open Google Play Store while the watch is connected, find Google Maps, and choose the watch as the installation target if it appears. Samsung describes this option in its Wear OS setup instructions.
- Open Maps on the watch and sign in to your Google account if prompted.
Start a route from the watch
- Open Maps from the watch’s app list.
- Choose Home, Work, a recent destination, or Search.
- Enter the destination with the on-screen keyboard or microphone.
- Choose an available travel mode, such as driving, cycling, or walking, then start navigation.
- Follow the map, upcoming directions and ETA. The watch can provide vibration alerts for turns.
- To stop navigation, open the map controls and tap Exit.
Google documents these controls and modes in its Wear OS Maps help. Public-transit directions may be available, but Google does not describe them as having the same turn-by-turn voice and haptic guidance as the other modes.
Start on the phone and continue on the watch
- Open Google Maps on the paired phone, search for a destination, and tap Directions.
- Select a travel mode and tap Start.
- Keep the watch connected and allow Maps notifications. On supported Wear OS versions, directions can appear or launch on the watch automatically, particularly for walking and cycling.
Exact auto-launch behavior depends on the Wear OS version and settings. To adjust it on supported versions, open Maps on the watch, go to Settings, tap Auto-launch, and enable or disable driving, cycling, or walking. Google notes that turning off Show on phone can speed watch updates and route audio through the watch, at the cost of more battery use.

What you need for phone-free directions
A Wear OS watch is not automatically independent of the phone in every situation. Google says a watch can navigate away from the phone using downloaded offline maps for driving, or LTE connectivity for driving, walking and cycling. Offline use depends on the relevant map data being downloaded and the watch’s software supporting the feature. A Bluetooth-only watch should not be assumed to provide full navigation when disconnected.
- A compatible Android phone for initial setup and paired-phone workflows. Samsung says Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 series require a compatible Android phone for setup.
- Google Maps installed and updated on the phone when using phone-to-watch directions.
- Location permission and Maps notifications enabled on the phone, with Google Maps notifications allowed on the watch in Galaxy Wearable.
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LTE, or downloaded maps as required by the route and intended phone-free use.
- Enough battery for the trip; power-saving restrictions can interrupt Maps.
Use Google Maps directions with a Gear Sport
The Gear Sport cannot run the current native Google Maps app for Wear OS. A practical option, if its legacy companion is still available to you, is Navigation Pro—Maps on Watch. Its developer says it supports Gear Sport and forwards Google Maps navigation instructions from the phone. It is a notification mirror, not a full Google Maps client on the watch, and it is not standalone.

Set up a notification mirror
- Pair the Gear Sport with your phone through Samsung’s wearable software.
- Install Navigation Pro’s phone app from Google Play. The developer listing says the watch companion is obtained through Samsung Galaxy Apps/Galaxy Store; check that it is still offered for your watch, region and store setup before relying on it.
- Open Navigation Pro on the phone and grant Notification Access when prompted.
- Confirm Google Maps notifications are enabled on the phone. A common Android path is Settings → Apps → Maps → Notifications; labels and notification categories vary by Android version.
- Start a route in Google Maps on the phone and keep the phone connected to the Gear Sport.
- Look for the turn instructions on the watch. What is shown, including vibration, depends on the app configuration and device setup.
The Navigation Pro listing showed a price of $2.99 and an update date of August 25, 2025 when checked for this article; price and availability may vary by country and account. See the Google Play listing and the developer’s site for current details.
What this workaround does not provide
- It does not install Google Maps or provide the full native Wear OS map interface.
- The phone calculates the route and sends instructions, so the workaround generally cannot navigate phone-free.
- It depends on notification access, phone-to-watch connectivity and a working Tizen companion app. Legacy app distribution or compatibility may fail in a particular region or store setup.
Troubleshoot missing maps or directions
Google Maps is missing from the watch
- Check the model first: Gear Sport and pre-Wear OS Galaxy Watches use Tizen and cannot install the current Wear OS Google Maps app.
- On a Wear OS watch, update the watch software and Play Store, then restart the watch and phone and search again.
- Do not try to sideload a Wear OS Google Maps APK onto a Tizen watch; the platforms are different.
Phone navigation starts but the watch shows nothing
- Confirm the watch is connected to the phone.
- Enable Google Maps notifications on the phone and allow them for the watch in Galaxy Wearable.
- Check that location permission is enabled.
- Disable battery saver or power-saving mode during navigation; Google warns that power saving can interfere with Maps.
- On supported Wear OS versions, check Maps’ Auto-launch settings.
- Update Maps and watch software, then restart both devices.
Navigation Pro stays on “Ready”
- Check that Google Maps navigation notifications appear in the phone’s notification shade.
- Re-enable Navigation Pro’s Notification Access.
- Confirm the watch companion is installed, then restart both devices.
- If needed, reinstall the phone component and check whether the Samsung app store still offers the companion for your watch and region.
Directions disappear or stop updating
Bluetooth disconnection, Android background limits, revoked notification access, disabled Maps notification categories, battery optimization, software updates or loss of Tizen companion support can interrupt mirrored directions. Recheck the connection and permissions, but test the setup before relying on it for an unfamiliar trip; legacy compatibility is not guaranteed.

Keep the Gear Sport or move to Wear OS?
- Keep the Gear Sport if you mainly want turn prompts, accept having the phone connected, and can still install a compatible companion.
- Choose a Wear OS Galaxy Watch if you want Google Maps on the watch itself, watch-based destination search and route views, or supported LTE and offline-map options.
- Consider replacing the Gear Sport if its companion is unavailable or you need dependable phone-free navigation. Check the new watch’s phone compatibility before buying; a functioning Gear Sport may still be adequate for basic mirrored prompts.
