If your Apple Watch Ultra stops charging below 100%, it may be working normally. Optimized Charge Limit learns your charging and usage habits, then may pause at a lower level to reduce the time the lithium-ion battery spends fully charged. When you need maximum capacity, use Charge to Full Now instead of permanently disabling the feature.
What Optimized Charge Limit does
Optimized Charge Limit is a battery-longevity feature available on Apple Watch Ultra models running watchOS 10 or later. Apple says it uses on-device machine learning to study your charging and usage patterns. The watch can then select a changing maximum charge level rather than charging to 100% during every session.
This is not a manually configured 80% or 90% cap. The limit can differ from one day to another, and the watch may charge fully when its learned behavior suggests that you will need the extra capacity.
Apple’s aim is to reduce battery wear by limiting the time the battery remains completely charged. Apple does not specify a guaranteed battery-health improvement or a fixed number of additional charge cycles.

Optimized Charge Limit versus Optimized Battery Charging
| Feature | How it behaves |
|---|---|
| Optimized Battery Charging | In certain circumstances, charging beyond approximately 80% is delayed. Apple says the battery may remain around 75–80% during an anticipated long charging period. |
| Optimized Charge Limit | Chooses a dynamic maximum based on your typical usage. It may stop at different levels and may charge to 100% when extra capacity is expected to be useful. |
Both features are intended to reduce battery wear, but Optimized Charge Limit is adaptive rather than a permanent, user-selected percentage limit.
Which Apple Watch models support it?
Apple says Optimized Charge Limit requires watchOS 10 or later and is available on:
- Apple Watch SE and later
- Apple Watch Series 6 and later
- Apple Watch Ultra and later
For Apple Watch Ultra owners, the practical requirement is to use a supported Ultra model with watchOS 10 or a later release. Apple’s support list does not provide a separate Ultra-by-Ultra percentage or behavior table.

The labels can vary slightly with language or software version, but the setting is under Battery Health on the Apple Watch itself. Apple also documents this path in its Apple Watch charging guide.
How to tell when it is working
Attach the Ultra to its charger and check the charging display. When Optimized Charge Limit is active, you may see:
- An open charging ring rather than a complete ring
- A charge level below 100%
- A different selected limit on different days
A new, restored, or recently reset watch may initially show Charging to full while it learns your routine. The feature may also be less noticeable when you charge at unpredictable times or places.

If you are heading out for a long hike, dive, workout, flight, or travel day, you can request a full charge for that occasion:
- Leave the Apple Watch connected to its charger.
- Tap the watch to display the charging screen.
- Tap the circle containing the green or yellow charging icon.
- Tap Charge to Full Now.
This one-time override is usually the best option when you need more battery for a particular day. It preserves the automatic optimization for normal charging sessions.

How to turn Optimized Charge Limit off
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Health.
- Turn off Optimized Charge Limit.
- Choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow or Turn Off.
Choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow when your schedule is unusual or you are traveling. Use the permanent Turn Off option only if predictable full charging matters more to you than reducing battery wear. Apple warns that disabling charging optimization can increase battery wear and reduce battery lifespan over time; it does not mean that turning the feature off immediately damages the battery.

The feature is doing what it is designed to do
A charge below 100% and an open ring can be expected behavior. Optimized Charge Limit is not necessarily holding the watch at one fixed percentage.

The watch is still learning
New or reset watches need time to learn charging patterns. Leave the Ultra on its charger during your normal charging window rather than judging the feature after one session.
Your routine is too variable
Apple says optimized charging is designed to activate mainly in familiar places where you spend substantial time, such as home or work. Irregular charging and travel can prevent the optimization from activating consistently.
Location settings are disabled
Apple says these settings can help optimized charging identify appropriate situations:

- On Apple Watch, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and make sure Location Services is on.
- On the paired iPhone, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → System Services.
- Enable System Customization.
- In the same area, enable Significant Locations or the region-specific equivalent, such as Significant Locations & Routes.
Exact wording may vary by region and by the current iOS release. Apple says the location information used for this feature is not sent to Apple.
The full-charge control is hidden
Keep the Ultra connected, tap the charging screen, then tap the circle with the green or yellow charging icon. The Charge to Full Now option appears there.
It is a general charging problem
If the watch still will not charge after choosing Charge to Full Now, check the charger’s alignment, the power adapter, debris on the charging surfaces, excessive heat, and possible cable or charger damage. Optimized Charge Limit does not explain every failure to charge.
Should you leave it enabled?
- Leave it on if you usually charge overnight or on a predictable schedule and battery longevity matters.
- Choose Charge to Full Now when you need extra capacity for an unusually demanding day.
- Turn it off until tomorrow when travel or a one-day schedule change makes the normal routine unreliable.
- Turn it off permanently only when predictable 100% charging is consistently more important than reducing battery wear.
For most Apple Watch Ultra owners, leaving Optimized Charge Limit enabled is the sensible default. A watch that stops below 100% is not automatically defective; first check the open-ring indicator and use Charge to Full Now when you need maximum capacity.
