Tap Gestures are separate: tap your index finger and thumb together once to select a Smart Stack widget, or twice to perform a context-dependent action such as answering a call or scrolling.
Which Apple Watch models support these gestures?
Apple’s published compatibility statements differ by gesture. Its watchOS 26 update information lists Wrist Flick for Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later. Apple’s tap-gesture troubleshooting information lists Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, and SE 3. Gesture availability also depends on the screen and watch state.
| Gesture | Apple’s published supported models | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Wrist Flick | Series 9 and Ultra 2, and later models | Dismisses notifications and incoming calls, silences timers and alarms, and returns to the watch face |
| Tap Gestures | Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, or SE 3 | Single tap selects a Smart Stack widget; Double Tap performs an available action based on context |
These are gesture-specific compatibility statements, not a promise that every watch running watchOS 26 supports every gesture.
How to use Wrist Flick
- Raise your wrist so the notification, incoming call, timer, or alarm is visible.
- Quickly turn your wrist away from you and back.
- Check the screen. Wrist Flick can dismiss the notification or call and return to the watch face, or silence a timer or alarm.
How to use Single Tap and Double Tap
Tap Gestures use your index finger and thumb. Bring the two together once for Single Tap or twice for Double Tap. The action depends on the current screen and whether that action is supported.

| Gesture | Documented use | Key limitation |

| Double Tap | Can answer or end a call, reply to a message, open or scroll Smart Stack, and scroll in supported apps | Actions vary by context; it is unavailable in certain watch states and apps |
Wrist Flick is for dismissing or silencing an alert. Tap Gestures perform available actions on the current screen; they are not interchangeable.
When Double Tap is unavailable
Apple identifies situations in which Double Tap does not work, including:
Rank #2
- Low Power Mode is enabled or Sleep Focus is active.
- The watch is locked or the display is inactive because your wrist is down.
- Accessibility features that use hand gestures are enabled.
- The watch is configured for a family member.
- You are using the Depth app or taking an ECG.
If the Double Tap icon shakes, the gesture is unavailable on that screen or in that third-party app. It does not necessarily indicate a problem with the watch.
Troubleshoot gestures that do not work
- Check model compatibility. Confirm that your watch is listed for the gesture you want to use.
- Check gesture settings. In the watch Settings app or the Apple Watch app on iPhone, check Gestures and Tap Gestures. Confirm Wrist Detection is enabled.
- Wake and unlock the watch. Raise your wrist so the display is active, and wear the watch snugly.
- Temporarily turn off modes that can interfere. Try disabling Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, Theatre Mode, and Water Lock.
- Try the gesture while still. For Double Tap, bring your index finger and thumb together at a steady, deliberate pace.
- Check accessibility settings. AssistiveTouch, Quick Actions, Zoom with Hand Gestures, and VoiceOver with Hand Gestures can affect gesture availability.
- Toggle the gesture if needed. If gestures happen unintentionally during an activity, Apple advises turning the feature off temporarily in Settings > Gestures and turning it on again when finished.
AssistiveTouch is a separate feature
AssistiveTouch is an accessibility feature with configurable hand gestures, separate from the standard tap gestures and Wrist Flick. Apple says universal Double Tap is unavailable while AssistiveTouch is on. If a gesture stops working after changing accessibility settings, check for a gesture conflict.
