To judge whether a jeweller’s offer is fair, first establish what it values: scrap metal, a resale purchase, or the piece as a collectible. Ask for the weight, stated fineness, unit price, deductions and net payout, then compare written offers for the same items. There is no universal fair-offer percentage. If a piece is antique, branded, unusual or gemstone-set, check its possible value as jewellery before accepting a scrap-only offer.
What kind of value are you trying to establish?
A scrap-metal offer, a second-hand resale estimate, an auction estimate and an insurance replacement valuation answer different questions. A buyer offering to melt an item is not necessarily assessing its design, stones, brand, age or condition. Nor should a replacement valuation be treated as the amount you could receive in a sale.

That is a possibility, not a promised result for any particular item; sale fees, shipping, time and the chance of no sale affect what you ultimately receive. Before agreeing, ask the buyer to explain the offer piece by piece. Request the item’s weight, the fineness they attribute to it, the price per gram or other unit, every deduction or fee, and the net amount payable. Check whether assessment, refining, postage or other charges apply, and whether stones or non-gold components are excluded from the weighed material.

In the UK, Birmingham City Council Trading Standards says that a dealer offering to buy scrap gold at today’s bullion price must do so. Its guidance also says relevant unit-price information should make the metal type, fineness, weight basis, associated costs and unit price clear. Make an itemized list and take photographs before handing anything over. Keep the buyer’s written quote or record the terms. This makes it easier to identify whether two offers cover the same pieces and use the same assumptions.

How to estimate the metal basis of a gold offer
A simplified scrap estimate starts with the weight of the precious-metal portion, multiplied by its estimated gold fraction and the current gold price for the relevant unit. Then account for the buyer’s stated deductions and costs. This is a way to understand the calculation—not a guarantee that a buyer will pay the theoretical metal value or use precisely this method.
Weight alone is not enough. Stones, springs, mixed-metal parts, solder and hollow construction can affect what a buyer accepts or counts. Ask how the dealer treated those parts, and whether the quoted weight is for the whole item or only the material being valued. Metal prices and buyer terms change, so get same-day quotes rather than relying on an old price figure.

For a UK gold item, common fineness marks include:

These are UK examples, not a universal marking system. UK hallmarking guidance explains that hallmarks identify precious-metal description and fineness, while minimum-weight exemptions apply. A mark can help establish the stated fineness, but it does not determine the whole item’s value. Read the UK government’s hallmarking guidance and consumer guidance on hallmarking.
Hallmarks can be very small; magnification can make one easier to inspect. It cannot by itself prove authenticity, purity or price. If a mark is absent, illegible or doubtful—and purity would materially change your decision—ask about recognized testing rather than treating a loupe inspection as an assay.

How to compare offers fairly
- Use the same items. List each piece and ensure every buyer is quoting for that exact set.
- Use the same basis. Ask each buyer whether the quote is for scrap, resale or another basis, and record the assumed weight and fineness.
- Ask for all costs. Include deductions, postage, assessment, refining and other charges that reduce payment.
- Compare net payouts. A headline rate or “up to” figure is not the same as the amount you will receive.
- Get more than one quote. Nottinghamshire Trading Standards recommends weighing items, asking several buyers and checking fees or postage costs. Its gold-selling guidance includes a historical local survey example: a bracelet received local-shop offers of £40–£60, while a postal buyer’s initial offer was £5.31. Those figures are a dated, location-specific illustration of why comparison matters—not current prices or a typical spread.
Could the jewellery be worth more than scrap?
Some pieces may appeal to buyers as jewellery rather than as metal. Consider getting an independent opinion before accepting a scrap-only quote if an item is antique, branded, unusual, collectible or set with gemstones. A second-hand buyer or auction specialist may recognize qualities a metal-only offer does not, but a higher net return is not assured. Compare likely proceeds after commissions and other costs, as well as the time and uncertainty involved.
For diamonds and coloured stones, the US Federal Trade Commission advises asking about a stone’s origin and, for diamonds, whether it is natural or lab-created. Treatments can affect value compared with similar untreated stones; some sellers provide laboratory grading reports. These are useful questions, not a resale valuation of your stone. When asking for an independent valuation, clarify its purpose: a resale opinion and an insurance replacement valuation are not interchangeable. Ask what evidence the valuer uses, how the fee is calculated, and whether the valuer also wants to buy the item. For an auction estimate, ask about likely commissions and other selling costs before comparing it with an immediate dealer payout.
When and where to get purity testing
If the item’s purity is uncertain and that uncertainty affects the offer, consider an appropriate recognized testing service. In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards says consumers can request chargeable testing of jewellery or samples through a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre and receive an assay report. BIS also describes a consumer feature for checking the HUID on applicable hallmarked gold. Those systems apply in India; elsewhere, check the recognized assay services and hallmark rules in your jurisdiction. BIS hallmarking information
Testing makes most sense when the result could change what you do. If you are considering an independent valuation, ask whether testing is included, what the report covers and whether the service is independent of the prospective buyer.
