Verifying a high-value Patek Philippe means checking two related but separate things: whether the watch and its configuration are consistent with the brand’s records, and whether the seller can document a credible ownership history. An Extract from the Archives can help with the first question, but it is not a complete ownership ledger, a condition report, or a guarantee that a watch is clear of every theft database. Combine document checks with an authorized physical inspection and independent seller due diligence before committing funds.
How can I verify a Patek Philippe watch is authentic?
Use several checks rather than treating one document, number, or photograph as conclusive. Compare the watch’s reference and identifiers with the paperwork and available archive evidence, then have a qualified professional inspect it. Authentication of the watch’s recorded configuration is distinct from establishing who owned it or whether its components remain original.

- Ask for the documents. Request the original Certificate of Origin if available, service invoices, dated bills of sale, and any relevant estate or inheritance records. Ask the seller to explain the watch’s history and any missing paperwork.
- Compare the details. Check that the reference and identifiers shown on the documents correspond to the watch and to the archive information available for that particular timepiece. Investigate mismatches rather than assuming they are clerical errors.
- Arrange an authorized inspection. Have an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center confirm the movement and case numbers and assess the watch. Do not remove the case back yourself or treat a seller’s close-up photograph as proof.
- Assess originality, condition, and service history. Ask what parts, if any, have been replaced, restored, or refinished, and have the answers documented. A record of a genuine watch’s manufacturing history does not establish its present condition or the originality of every component.
- Check the transaction independently. Verify the seller’s identity and authority to sell, obtain written sale terms and guarantees, and make an independent inspection possible before payment becomes irreversible.
What does an Extract from the Archives verify?
Patek Philippe says its archive records date to 1839. An Extract is a partial transcript for a particular timepiece: it describes selected recorded manufacturing history and key features, as well as the recorded date of sale. It can help establish whether the watch’s documented configuration is consistent with information in the brand’s archives.
An Extract does not establish every later owner, provide an unbroken chain of custody, guarantee current condition, or independently clear the watch against every theft database. It should be treated as one piece of evidence, not as a substitute for ownership documents or a specialist’s inspection.

Current ordering conditions
According to Patek Philippe’s ordering page and Extract FAQ, an Extract may be requested if the watch’s first sale was more than ten years before the request. The brand allows one request per timepiece in any 12-month period and requires photographs to check that the watch visually complies with its archive description. The listed fee is CHF 500, refundable if the watch is ineligible; delivery is stated as within ten weeks after order confirmation. Patek says it cannot process an Extract while the watch is under service. During the service-guarantee period after servicing, a service invoice may be accepted instead of serial-number images. These are current service terms, so confirm them with Patek Philippe before applying: Order a Patek Philippe Extract and Extract from the Archives FAQ.
How is the Certificate of Origin different from an Extract?
The Certificate of Origin is delivered with every new Patek Philippe watch. Patek says it identifies the watch through its movement, case, and reference numbers and serves as a warranty. The brand also says the original Certificate of Origin cannot be reissued or duplicated. If it is missing, Patek directs owners to contact the Official Retailer from whom the watch was purchased for assistance.

An Extract is a separate archive document that may be requested under the brand’s eligibility rules. It does not replace a lost Certificate of Origin. A watch offered without its original certificate should therefore be assessed on the available evidence, and the absence or explanation for the missing document should be included in the buyer’s decision.

Where are the Patek Philippe case and movement numbers?
Patek Philippe says the movement number is engraved on the movement and the case number is on the inside of the case back. Accessing those numbers on a wristwatch or pocket watch requires removing the case back. The brand’s instruction is explicit: “The removal of the case back of a wristwatch or pocket watch should only be performed by an Authorized Retailer or an Authorized Service Center.” See its Watch Authenticity FAQ.

Do not open a high-value watch yourself. Nor should an online image of a number be treated as conclusive: a photograph does not establish that the number belongs to the watch being sold, that its parts are original, or that its configuration matches the brand’s records. Ask an authorized professional to inspect the numbers and compare them with the documents and archive evidence for that watch.
How do I check a Patek Philippe watch’s provenance?
Provenance is the documented chain of ownership and custody, not just the watch’s manufacturing record. Ask for a dated account of ownership and, where relevant, where the watch was kept. Supporting records may include:

- [Mechanical Movement] This watch has manual self-winding. Please consider that mechanical watches that require manual winding can only keep time for a short time after winding. To prevent running or inaccurate time, it is advised that you verify the time periodically and wind up the chain 15–20 times.
- [Waterproof] Water resistant to 50m (165ft) -suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but not diving or snorkeling

- dated bills of sale or other transaction records;
- inheritance or estate documents when the watch passed through an estate;
- service invoices and records of disclosed repair, replacement, or restoration work.
Compare names, dates, reference, and identifiers across the records. Ask the seller to explain gaps, changes in names, or inconsistencies, and assess whether the explanation is supported by documents. Keep seller identity and authority to sell as separate checks from whether the watch’s components are consistent with archive records. Patek Philippe’s own archive information is not a complete title history.

How should I assess the seller and independent inspection?
Verify who is selling the watch and whether that person or business has authority to do so. Obtain the sale terms, return provisions, and any written authenticity or condition guarantees before payment. Where possible, make the purchase conditional on an independent inspection and avoid releasing funds irreversibly before that inspection is complete.
Patek Philippe says it cannot provide current resale values and recommends consulting an auction house or dealer specializing in older timepieces. Such a firm may be a useful independent resource, but that recommendation is not a manufacturer endorsement of a particular firm as an authenticator. Before relying on any specialist, agree in writing on the scope of the inspection, experience with the exact reference, treatment of originality and replaced parts, conflicts of interest, insurance, and liability.
Does Patek Philippe offer a public stolen-watch check?
Patek Philippe describes a process for owners to submit theft notifications to its Extracts Service; it is not a buyer-facing public search or a guarantee that an unreported watch is clear. The brand says an owner must provide a crime report from a competent official authority that clearly shows the theft reference and watch serial number, along with the authority’s contact details. The report must be in English or French, or translated into one of those languages, unless it is already in French, English, Spanish, German, or Italian. Patek warns that it cannot guarantee theft registration if a required document is missing. See the Watch Theft FAQ.
Quick Recap
What should make a buyer pause?
- Identifiers or references that do not match across the watch, paperwork, and available archive information.
- Unexplained gaps or contradictions in the ownership and service history.
- Undisclosed or undocumented replacement, restoration, or refinishing work.
- A seller who will not establish their identity or authority to sell, provide written terms, or permit an independent inspection before payment.
- Pressure to treat an Extract, Certificate of Origin, serial-number image, or any single piece of paperwork as proof of every aspect of authenticity and provenance.
