The most reliable way to verify a pre-owned Rolex before you pay is to buy it as a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) watch from a participating Official Rolex Retailer. Rolex says only Rolex can confirm a watch’s authenticity. A watch described simply as “pre-owned,” even by an Official Rolex Retailer, is not automatically part of the CPO programme.
Choose the verification route before judging the watch
Rolex recommends buying through its Official Rolex Retailer network. You can use Rolex’s retailer listings to check a seller’s status; Rolex also says the Official Rolex plaque at a retailer’s premises or on its website identifies it as an Official Rolex Retailer. Confirm the seller independently rather than relying only on a marketplace listing or the seller’s description.

How to check a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned claim
Rolex CPO is a specific programme, not a generic label for second-hand watches. Rolex says eligible watches are at least two years old and are sold through participating Official Rolex Retailers. The programme’s requirements and availability may vary with participating retailers and stock.

- Verify the retailer. Find the seller in Rolex’s Official Retailer listings and confirm its status independently.
- Confirm the sale is explicitly CPO. Check that the listing and sales paperwork identify the exact watch as Rolex Certified Pre-Owned. A retailer’s authorised status does not make every used watch it sells a CPO watch.
- Check the programme items. A CPO watch is supplied with a special seal and a CPO guarantee card. Ask to see that they accompany the watch, and ensure the paperwork relates to the purchase being made.
- Read the guarantee terms. Rolex states that a CPO watch receives a two-year international guarantee beginning on its purchase date. Check the seller’s paperwork for the applicable terms in your market.
- Ask about condition and service. Rolex says CPO watches return to its workshops for original-configuration verification, component checks, full service, and testing. Ask the retailer what is documented for this individual watch and whether any condition limits apply.
Rolex’s certification-process page states, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” A box, generic certificate, seller’s assertion, or set of papers should not be treated as equivalent to the CPO process.
What Rolex CPO does—and does not—establish
For a CPO watch, Rolex describes returning it to its workshops, verifying its original configuration, checking components, and carrying out full servicing and detail testing. Those are programme assurances, not a claim that every secondary-market Rolex has undergone the same process.

Rolex also notes that some of the oldest CPO watches have exceptions concerning waterproofness and original precision. For a vintage watch, ask the retailer about its condition, service, and any stated performance limits. Do not infer water resistance from the Rolex name or CPO status alone.

Rolex describes a separate five-year international guarantee for new watches purchased from an Official Rolex Retailer, subject to its stated conditions: the watch must have been sold by an Official Rolex Jeweler, the guarantee card completed in full at the time of purchase, and the card presented with the watch to an Official Rolex Jeweler or Official Rolex Service Center. That five-year term is not the CPO guarantee; Rolex states that CPO watches receive a two-year international guarantee from their purchase date.
Neither a guarantee card from another sale nor paperwork accompanying an unrelated secondary-market watch proves that watch is authentic. Check that the purchase route, the watch, and the guarantee documents match.
What to do with a non-CPO listing
If a watch is not being sold under the Rolex CPO programme, treat authenticity as unconfirmed by Rolex unless Rolex itself has confirmed it. Rolex’s published guidance does not say that a visual inspection, serial-number lookup, box, or paperwork independently establishes authenticity. Avoid making a purchase decision on the strength of a DIY checklist presented as conclusive authentication.
