To start an automatic skeleton watch, remove it from your wrist, unlock the screw-down crown if it has one, and turn the crown clockwise in its normal position. Follow the movement’s own winding guidance: published manuals call for roughly 15–20 turns on one mechanical skeleton automatic, 20–30 turns on a STOWA automatic, or 6–8 turns to start another Michael Hill model. Pull the crown fully out to set the hands, then push it back in. If the watch has a date, avoid quick-setting it while the hands show about 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.; advance the hands past midnight instead. The skeleton design changes what you can see, not the basic crown procedure. The movement, crown construction and complications determine the correct operation.
What should you do before winding an automatic skeleton watch?
Take the watch off your wrist and identify the crown positions before turning anything. STOWA specifically recommends removing the watch so both hands can control the crown and you can feel the mechanical action clearly. Working this way also keeps you from twisting the case or pressing the crown sideways against your wrist.

- Check whether the crown is screwed into the case. A screw-down crown must be unlocked before it can be used.
- Look for a date window, power-reserve display or other indication that adds a setting position.
- Keep the model’s instruction manual available. Turn counts and crown layouts differ by movement.
Do not assume that every watch marketed as “automatic skeleton” uses the same calibre. The open-worked dial describes the visible architecture; it does not establish the winding direction, number of turns or date mechanism.
How do you unlock and lock a screw-down crown?
If the crown is screw-down, rotate it counterclockwise until the threads release and the crown springs or moves to its normal operating position. Do not pull hard while it is still threaded.

- Hold the case steady and turn the crown counterclockwise gently until it disengages.
- Use the normal crown position for hand-winding, or pull it to the appropriate setting position.
- After winding or setting, push the crown toward the case.
- While maintaining light inward pressure, turn the crown clockwise until it is fully seated and threaded.
Restoring the crown against the case is part of the water-resistance procedure. A crown left unscrewed can compromise the seal even when the watch itself has a stated water-resistance rating. If the crown will not catch its threads smoothly, stop rather than forcing it; damaged threads need inspection by a qualified watchmaker.
How do you hand-wind an automatic skeleton watch?
Hand-wind through the crown’s normal, pushed-in position. Turn it clockwise slowly and evenly. Seiko’s instructions for its cited movement say counterclockwise turning does not wind that movement, so do not count alternating directions as winding turns.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- With the crown unlocked and pushed in, begin turning it clockwise.
- Use the model’s specified number of turns as your guide. The figures below are movement-specific, not a universal rule.
- Stop when you reach the stated full-wind amount or encounter clear, firm resistance.
- Push the crown in, then screw it down if the watch uses a screw-down design.
- Set the time if necessary and wear the watch regularly so normal arm movement continues winding it.
Each turn should feel controlled. A crown that suddenly binds, grinds, slips or feels rough is a reason to stop. Never use pliers, excessive force or rapid cranking to obtain more turns.
How many turns should you give the crown?
There is no single correct count for every automatic skeleton watch. Manufacturer documents show why the manual for your particular movement matters.
| Documented watch or movement | Published winding guidance | Other published operating figure |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Hill mechanical skeleton automatic (2024 manual) | Approximately 15–20 clockwise turns | 6–8 clockwise turns to start; 30–40 hours of reserve; 6–8 hours of wear figure |
| STOWA automatic | 20–30 crown turns sufficient to fully wind | Publication year not stated |
| Seiko cited automatic movement | Manual-winding direction is clockwise; counterclockwise turning does not wind the movement | About 41 hours fully wound; more than 10 hours of daily wear recommended |
The Michael Hill figures describe different practical stages: a small number of turns can get a stopped watch running, while its mechanical-skeleton guidance gives a larger approximate range for winding. STOWA’s 20–30-turn statement applies to STOWA automatic watches, not automatically to another brand’s calibre. Seiko’s reserve and wear figures likewise apply to the cited movement.
When a manual gives a range, stop within that range rather than trying to match a precise number by feel. If no manual is available, use only gentle clockwise turns and stop at firm resistance; arrange a movement-specific check instead of guessing.

How do you set the time without damaging the movement?
Use the outer crown position for time-setting. Pull the crown fully out, turn the hour and minute hands to the correct time, then press the crown back in so the movement runs again.
- Unlock the crown if necessary.
- Pull it fully outward to the hand-setting position. The exact direction for moving the hands can vary, so follow the model manual.
- Turn the hands to the desired time. If a date is fitted, first determine whether the displayed cycle is noon or midnight, as described below.
- Press the crown fully back in. A pushed-in crown allows the movement to run; a screw-down crown should then be secured.
- Check that the seconds hand has resumed movement and that the crown is seated.
Set the hands with the watch off your wrist. This gives you a stable grip and makes it easier to notice a crown that has not returned to its running position.
How do you set the date safely?
A date mechanism needs extra care because its changeover parts engage during the late-evening and early-morning period. STOWA warns against using a quick-set date position when the watch displays approximately 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.; operating the date then can damage the mechanism.
Establish whether the watch shows noon or midnight
- Move the hands forward with the crown in the hand-setting position.
- Watch for the date to change. The change identifies midnight, not noon.
- Continue to the correct time, remembering whether you are in the first half or second half of the day.
Use the quick-set date only outside the danger period
Once the hands are safely outside the approximately 9 p.m.–3 a.m. window, select the date-setting position if your model has one and advance the date as instructed. If the watch has no quick-set position, advance the hands through midnight one day at a time. Never force the date forward or backward when the crown feels blocked.
Some skeleton watches omit a date to expose more of the movement, while others retain one. Do not infer the presence or absence of a quick-set function from the skeleton design; confirm it in the manual.
How do you restart a watch that has stopped?
A stopped automatic watch normally needs a small manual wind before it can be worn. The Michael Hill manual cites 6–8 clockwise turns to start its mechanical skeleton automatic, while its separate full-winding guidance is approximately 15–20 turns. These are instructions for that documented model, not a general prescription.

- Give the crown the model’s documented starting turns in the normal position.
- Set the time and date using the safe procedures above.

After starting, ordinary wrist movement winds the automatic system. Seiko reports about 41 hours of running time for its cited movement when fully wound and recommends more than 10 hours of daily wear to avoid rate changes associated with under-winding. A watch with a shorter or longer reserve may need a different wearing pattern.
Can you overwind an automatic skeleton watch?
You should not try to wind past the model’s full-wind guidance or force a crown that reaches firm resistance. Modern automatic movements are designed for regular winding, but the safe action for an owner is still to stop at the documented limit rather than testing the mechanism.

A crown that keeps turning lightly after the normal range is not an invitation to continue indefinitely, and a crown that becomes hard to turn should never be forced. If you are unsure whether resistance is normal, stop winding and have the watch examined.
What does the skeleton design change?
Skeleton construction exposes portions of the movement through the dial, bridges or case back. It does not create a separate winding method. The Michael Hill document is explicitly for a “mechanical – skeleton automatic” and still uses ordinary crown winding and time-setting positions.
What can change is the number of operations you must perform. A skeleton watch may have a date, power-reserve indicator or screw-down crown, and each complication adds a model-specific position or precaution. Read the crown diagram rather than relying on the appearance of the open-worked movement.
Why visual access does not make the watch easier to adjust
The visible gears and balance can make it tempting to manipulate the crown repeatedly while watching the mechanism. Resist that temptation. The correct feedback comes from the crown’s controlled movement and the manual’s instructions, not from trying to influence exposed components.

What should you do if the crown, date or hands behave unexpectedly?
The crown will not turn
- Check whether it is still screwed into the case.
- Confirm that you are not pressing it sideways against the case tube.
- If it remains locked or gritty after gentle handling, stop and seek service.
The watch stops soon after winding
Verify that you used the clockwise winding direction and reached the movement’s documented starting or full-wind range. Seiko’s cited movement is specified at about 41 hours when fully wound, while other movements have different reserves. If the watch repeatedly stops despite correct winding and regular wear, service may be needed.
The date changes at noon
The hands are likely 12 hours out of phase. Advance them through the next date change to identify midnight, then set the correct time. Do not use the quick-set date during the approximately 9 p.m.–3 a.m. engagement period.
The crown will not screw back down
Push it straight toward the case and turn gently until the threads align. If it cross-threads, grinds or refuses to seat, leave the watch dry and arrange professional inspection rather than forcing it.
The hands do not move after setting
Press the crown fully back in. A crown left in the hand-setting position stops the movement while you adjust it. If the seconds hand still does not resume after the crown is seated and the watch has been gently wound, stop operating it and request service.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How should you compare instructions for two automatic skeleton watches?
Compare the movement and crown architecture, not the marketing label alone. A useful comparison records the following details for each model:
- Calibre or movement designation, if supplied.
- Clockwise winding direction and the documented turn range.
- Power reserve and any recommended daily-wear period.
- Whether the crown is screw-down and how it is resealed.
- Whether a date is fitted, including quick-set restrictions.
- Availability of an official manual, retailer support and an authorized service network.
Never treat a 15–20-turn instruction and a 20–30-turn instruction as evidence that one watch is better. They may simply use different mainsprings, gearing or winding systems. The correct figure is the one published for the movement inside your watch.

When should you stop adjusting the watch and seek service?
Professional help is appropriate when the crown binds, slips, feels gritty, will not reseat, or no longer engages the movement. It is also prudent after accidental force during date adjustment, especially if the date no longer changes normally or the hands lose their expected relationship.
Use the retailer or an authorized watchmaker identified for the model. Grand Seiko owner documentation, for example, treats retailer and service support as part of normal ownership resources. Keep the watch away from water until a crown or seal problem has been checked, because an improperly closed crown cannot be assumed to preserve water resistance.
A compact operating checklist
- Remove the watch from your wrist.
- Unlock the screw-down crown, if fitted.
- Wind clockwise in the normal crown position using the model’s documented range.
- Stop at the full-wind limit or firm resistance; never force it.
- Pull the crown fully out to set the hands.
- For a date, identify midnight and avoid quick-setting from approximately 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
- Press the crown in so the movement runs.
- Screw the crown down again to restore its seal.
- Wear the watch regularly according to its power-reserve and wear guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my automatic skeleton watch stop when I take it off overnight?
An automatic watch runs only while it has stored energy. The reserve depends on its movement; one cited Seiko movement is specified at about 41 hours when fully wound, so a watch can stop after being left untouched for longer than its available reserve.
Is it safe to wind an automatic watch every morning?
Routine hand-winding is part of normal operation when performed in the pushed-in crown position and within the model’s documented range. Stop when the manual’s limit or firm resistance is reached instead of adding turns by habit.
Why does my skeleton watch have different crown positions from another one?
Crown positions are determined by the movement and complications, not by the skeleton appearance. A date, power-reserve display or screw-down construction can add positions or steps that another model does not have.
What should I do if I accidentally quick-set the date at night?
Stop using the date-setting position and check whether the date changes normally after the hands are advanced through a complete midnight change. If the mechanism feels stuck or the date no longer advances correctly, have the watch inspected rather than forcing the crown.
