Van Cleef & Arpels begins with a story, then develops the dial and mechanics needed to tell it. In a 2025 interview, Stéphanie Rault described watches as an important but niche part of a jewellery Maison—not its main business. That distinction helps explain why its watchmaking often treats a time display as both a technical object and a piece of jewellery.
A jewellery Maison with a distinct watchmaking tradition
Rault, Van Cleef & Arpels’ European president at the time of the interview, described the house first as a jewellery Maison. Watches have a long history there, she said, but remain a preserved, important niche rather than the core business. The approach is therefore not simply to make conventional watches and decorate them; it is to bring jewellery design and narrative into timekeeping.
That positioning does not mean the watches lack substantial technical work. Rather, the mechanics serve a larger design idea. As Rault put it, “The angle is always to tell a story with poetic complications or extraordinary dials. We start with a story and then see how we can fit it in a dial and, obviously, all the mechanics that go around and behind it. But it is not the main purpose: the main purpose is telling the story.” (MONOCHROME, 5 February 2025)
Story first, mechanics in service of the idea
The process Rault describes reverses the emphasis of a purely complication-led watch: the mechanism is not the point for its own sake. A narrative determines what the dial needs to show and how the movement must make that scene legible. CNA’s 2026 account reports a similar view from Rainer Bernard, Van Cleef & Arpels’ head of research and development for watchmaking: “The story always comes first – that’s very important to us.”

- Used Book in Good Condition
CNA reports that the Maison’s “poetry of time” concept began in 2006 with the Poetic Complications collection. The phrase captures the combination: a watch can have a mechanical complication, but the complication is shaped around a poetic image or event rather than presented only as a technical feat.
Pont des Amoureux makes the time part of the story
Pont des Amoureux is a clear example of that principle. The scene is a couple meeting and kissing on a bridge at noon and midnight. The retrograde display gives the woman the hours and the man the minutes; their figures move toward one another and meet at those two moments. The display turns the reading of time into the unfolding of the narrative, rather than placing a separate story beside an ordinary dial.
CNA reports that newer models include an animation-on-demand module, allowing the kiss to be triggered at another time. That feature is reported for newer models and should not be assumed to exist on every Pont des Amoureux reference.

- Read the time on a dial where butterfly-shaped hands and a heart-shaped hour hand retell an old love story of two butterflies chasing each other, set on color-matched seed beads, created for those who appreciate artistic and design-first timepieces
- Wear it every day: the 316L stainless steel case carries a rose-gold PVD finish that keeps its color, and a sapphire crystal that shrugs off scratches
- Look closer at the 40 claw-set cubic zirconia stones ringing the dial on a band named for the Milky Way, the trail the two butterflies trace as they circle the night sky
- Set it once and leave it: a Japanese quartz movement keeps time without winding, while the 14mm lizard-embossed leather strap swaps out to match your outfit and adjusts from 135 to 185mm. Backed by a 2-year warranty
- Slip it on and forget the weight: at 37 grams with a 34mm case, it stays light all day and tucks under any sleeve. Rain and splashes are fine at 3 ATM, and a fitting gift for anniversaries, birthdays,or Valentine's Day
Jewellery design can shape the watch itself
Not every Van Cleef & Arpels watch uses an elaborate narrative complication. Rault also described pieces as “jewels that tell time,” where a recognizable jewellery motif or bracelet form determines how the watch looks and is worn.

Alhambra brings the Maison’s four-leaf-clover motif into watch design. Rault said the motif had been part of the collection since 1968. Its role is visual and symbolic: the watch draws on a jewellery identity that is recognizable independently of the time display.
Cadenas
Rault described Cadenas as lock-inspired and worn more like a bracelet, with the time display somewhat concealed. In her explanation, that discreet display connects to an older idea of women’s watches as jewellery whose time could be kept private. This is Rault’s account of the design’s context, not a universal history of women’s watches.

Pierre Arpels
Rault characterized Pierre Arpels as the Maison’s gentlemen’s line, designed by Pierre Arpels in the mid-20th century and later modernized. In the 2025 interview, she said Van Cleef & Arpels did not intend to develop the line much further, citing market saturation and the house’s identity as a jewellery Maison. That is a statement of strategy at the time of the interview, not a guarantee of the current collection roadmap.
How the work is organized
Rault said the Maison had brought a substantial amount of watchmaking inside its own operations, with more parts made at its Meyrin workshop as the category grew. The arrangement is not a claim that every movement is made in-house: when appropriate, the Maison may use a movement from a Richemont sister brand, while many other parts are made in its workshop. The account describes a mixed model, not blanket outsourcing or complete vertical integration.

For automatons, Rault described a separate technical collaboration with a workshop in Sainte-Croix. The partner handles the technical portion, while work at Meyrin includes crafts and assembly. She listed stone selection and cutting, jewellery making, polishing and setting among the tasks performed there. CNA also reports highly specialized surface and miniature work elsewhere in the collection, including grisaille enamel on Pont des Amoureux and miniature painting, sculpted gold and mother-of-pearl on Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier; those techniques are CNA’s reporting, not claims made by Rault in the interview.

Automatons are exceptional, not everyday production
Rault described the Maison’s automatons as one-of-a-kind or customized creations made in very small quantities. They should be understood as exceptional works rather than ordinary boutique stock. She said interested clients may be invited to see a creation in progress, reflecting how much specialized craft and assembly can be involved.
CNA reports that making a Van Cleef & Arpels timepiece typically takes approximately four years, citing Bernard. This is an approximate duration as reported by CNA, not a schedule established for every model or custom work.
What this approach means for the watches
Van Cleef & Arpels’ watchmaking is best understood as jewellery-led and narrative-driven, with technical choices made to realize a particular dial, motif or animated scene. Some watches put a poetic complication at the center; others translate familiar jewellery forms into timepieces. In Rault’s account, the mechanics matter because they make the story work—not because technical complexity is the final goal.
