Wearables made a significant, but uneven, shift toward AI in 2025. Smart glasses put assistants closer to what people see and hear, while watches gained conversational assistants and coaching and Oura brought AI interpretation to ring data. These launches show a change in product direction—not proof that every wearable became autonomous or that AI features improved health outcomes.
The clearest hardware progression came from Meta: everyday Ray-Ban glasses, sport-positioned Oakley glasses, and display-equipped glasses controlled in part by a wristband. Google brought Gemini to compatible Wear OS watches, and Oura introduced an assistant that answers questions using a member’s ring data. Company announcements establish what was launched or planned; they do not establish independent comparative performance or lasting consumer demand.
What changed in wearable AI?
Earlier wearables mainly collected or displayed information. In 2025, more companies presented AI as an interpretation and interaction layer: ask a question, get help with a task, hear workout guidance, or explore patterns in personal health data. The form that took depended on the device.

Smart glasses were the clearest hardware pivot
Glasses can put a camera, microphones, speakers, and voice interface in the wearer’s ordinary field of view while leaving hands free. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg argued at Meta’s September 2025 event that glasses are the form factor where AI can “see what you see, hear what you hear.” That is Meta’s case for the product category, not an independent technical assessment.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2: everyday eyewear with an assistant
Meta announced Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 on September 17, 2025. The company described 3K Ultra HD video, expanded live translation to German and Portuguese at announcement, and up to eight hours of typical-use battery life. It announced a starting price of $379 USD. These are dated manufacturer claims and launch pricing, not independent measurements or current prices.
Meta also said Ray-Ban Meta had become the world’s best-selling AI glasses, based on IDC historical sales data as of July 2025. That is a company-reported characterization; it should not be treated as an independently verified unit count.
Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses represent the everyday-eyewear version of the pitch: camera, audio, voice AI, and translation in a familiar frame. Check current price, stock, compatibility, and availability before buying.
Oakley Meta HSTN: sport-focused positioning
Meta announced Oakley Meta HSTN on June 20, 2025. The company described a built-in camera, open-ear speakers, IPX4 water resistance, Meta AI, and hands-free video capture. Meta stated up to eight hours of typical-use battery life and up to 19 hours on standby. Launch pricing was announced at $399 USD for the collection and $499 USD for a limited edition. These are company claims and announcement prices, not independent test results.

Meta Ray-Ban Display: visual output and wristband input
At Meta Connect in September 2025, Meta announced Meta Ray-Ban Display, with a display in one lens and a Meta Neural Band that uses electromyography (EMG) signals for wrist and finger gestures. Meta described visual AI answers and how-tos, message previews, camera preview and zoom, pedestrian navigation, captions, translation, and music controls.
Meta said availability at selected U.S. retailers would begin September 30, 2025. The Associated Press reported an announced price of $799. These are launch details, not evidence of broad worldwide availability or current pricing.
AI also reached watches and rings
Wear OS: Gemini on the wrist
Google announced on July 9, 2025, that Gemini was beginning to roll out to compatible Wear OS watches from Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. Google described natural-language questions, task completion across apps, reminders, and access to Google services. Compatibility and setup requirements apply, and the announcement does not mean the rollout reached every watch or user at once.

In its August 20, 2025 Pixel Watch 4 announcement, Google described Gemini as an on-wrist assistant and announced AI Smart Replies and a Gemini-based personal AI health-coach preview for Fitbit users or Pixel Watch users in the U.S., with an October preview planned. Treat this as a dated announcement and plan, not a claim that every feature was immediately available to all users.

Oura: conversational interpretation of ring data
Oura introduced Oura Advisor on March 31, 2025. It said the assistant could answer questions about sleep, activity, readiness, and resilience using members’ personal data, prior interactions, and information they shared. The idea is to help members explore trends rather than simply view scores.
Oura reported more than one million messages during Labs testing and said 83% of 3,655 surveyed testers found Advisor’s answers reliable. Those figures come from Oura’s own testing and survey, not independent clinical validation or a representative population study. Oura also cautioned that current LLM-based assistants can make mistakes. The announcement does not establish diagnosis or improved health outcomes.

Omdia estimated that global AI-glasses shipments reached 8.7 million units in 2025, up 322% year over year, and estimated Meta’s share at 85.2%. Omdia published those estimates on March 5, 2026. Shipments are not the same as sell-through to consumers or the number of people actively using the products.
The figures support rapid growth in AI glasses, but they do not show that all wearables changed equally, that buyers kept using AI features, or that glasses displaced phones. The available research documents product launches and one analyst shipment estimate, not independent tests of accuracy, privacy, comfort, battery life, or health outcomes.

What to check before buying an AI wearable
- Identify the task. Check whether the product offers camera assistance, translation, messaging, coaching, or interpretation of health trends rather than relying on a general AI label.
- Check compatibility and availability. Confirm the required phone, operating system, account, setup, region, and feature rollout for the specific model.
- Distinguish a launch claim from a test. Treat stated battery life, feature benefits, and product rankings as company claims unless independent evidence is available.
- Consider privacy and social context. Glasses with cameras and microphones raise questions about recording, bystanders, and use in private or workplace settings. Product controls do not resolve every consent or social-acceptance issue.
- Treat health insights cautiously. A ring or watch can help interpret personal trends, but the cited announcements do not establish clinical diagnosis or improved health outcomes.
