Hublot announced Light & Time, a temporary, functioning sundial designed by artist Daniel Arsham, on 6 March 2023. Set in the snow at Schwarzsee in Zermatt, Switzerland, the 20-metre installation used sunlight and a shadow to mark time across raked snow.
Where was Daniel Arsham’s Hublot sundial?
Hublot placed Light & Time at Schwarzsee, in Zermatt, Switzerland, in the shadow of the Matterhorn. The company’s announcement gives the site’s elevation as 2,583 metres and described the work as visible from the top of the mountain. At the time, Hublot said visitors would need to use Zermatt’s ski lifts to view it. That was the access description in the 2023 announcement, not current visitor guidance.
Hublot called the installation temporary. Its announcement does not give exact installation or removal dates or establish whether the work, or any part of it, remains at the site today.
How did the Hublot sundial tell time?
The 20-metre outdoor structure combined an obelisk shaped like a quartz crystal with a central pointer. As sunlight moved, the pointer’s shadow fell across markings raked into the snow, indicating the time. Hublot described the work as a meeting of sunlight, snow, land art and the timekeeping tradition associated with watchmaking.

Hublot said Arsham designed the sundial in the brand’s visual language, including details that echoed the screws securing the Big Bang bezel. Those are the company’s descriptions of the design.
Why did Hublot and Arsham make it?
Hublot introduced Arsham as a new brand ambassador and presented Light & Time as the start of their collaboration. Arsham described the temporary work as a way to capture how fleeting time can feel while leaving a lasting memory for people who made the journey up the mountain. He also said he valued how Hublot brought ideas, influences and materials together to create distinctive forms. Both statements appeared in Hublot’s announcement.
How the sundial differs from the Arsham Droplet
The sundial was an outdoor installation announced in 2023, not a watch. In 2024, Hublot and Arsham presented a separate project, the Arsham Droplet. Hublot described that limited-edition piece as usable as a pocket watch, pendant or table clock, and said production was limited to 99 pieces. It is distinct from Light & Time.

A small educational sundial can demonstrate the underlying idea—using the Sun’s apparent movement and a shadow to tell time—but it is not a replica of Arsham’s artwork. NASA’s Make Your Own Sundial page offers a printable template for students. NASA Science’s Create a Sundial Activity lists materials including a template, scissors, pencil, modeling dough or clay, and glue.

For a home activity, follow the chosen template’s instructions and use the sundial outdoors in sunlight. A sundial’s reading depends on sunlight and how it is set up; it is a hands-on demonstration, not a replacement for a watch or a claim to reproduce the precision or design of Light & Time.
