Its defining combination is an 18K King Gold case, a carbon bezel with gold inclusions and a layered sapphire dial that exposes parts of the automatic movement. This review draws on published assessments from 2015 and 2016; it is not a claim of personal handling or testing.
What watch is the Ferrari King Gold Carbon?
Time+Tide reviewed the watch in 2015, and Escapement followed in 2016. Both describe a 500-piece limited edition created as part of Hublot’s Ferrari collaboration. Escapement’s detailed specification identifies it as reference 401.OJ.0123.VR. Treat that reference as provisional when identifying an individual example: verify the case, warranty documentation and service records before buying.
The name can be confused with a current Hublot King Gold Carbon model. Hublot’s current product page is for the separate Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic King Gold Carbon 44 mm, reference 429.OQ.0180.RX, which uses the HUB6035 automatic tourbillon movement. Those specifications do not describe the Ferrari chronograph reviewed here.
Design: gold, carbon and an exposed movement
Case and bezel
Escapement lists a 45 mm 18K King Gold case. Time+Tide describes the case as microblasted and the bezel as carbon containing 18K gold inclusions. The contrast between warm gold and dark carbon gives the watch a more overtly automotive character than a conventional all-metal chronograph; that is a design interpretation, not a measured comparison.

The construction mixes materials and finishes rather than presenting a single uninterrupted gold surface.
Dial and Ferrari details
The transparent, multi-level sapphire dial reveals movement components below it. Angus Davies of Escapement points to the column wheel near 6 o’clock and observes that, although the display is busy, its information is grouped into portions he found readable. Time+Tide notes a gold Ferrari logo at 9 o’clock, red-tipped chronograph hands and a yellow date wheel. These are the reviewers’ descriptions and impressions, not findings from an independent legibility test.

Strap
The reviews describe a brown Schedoni leather strap; Escapement specifies a black rubber strap with brown Schedoni leather and brown stitching, plus an 18K King Gold deployant clasp. The sources support identifying this period configuration, but do not establish replacement-strap compatibility.
Movement and period-published specifications
Both period reviews identify the automatic HUB 1241 Unico chronograph, with flyback function and a 72-hour power reserve. Escapement specifies a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and 38 jewels. These are specifications reported in the 2016 review, not current manufacturer confirmation.

What the reviews say about wearing and reading it
Davies’s 2016 review emphasizes the layered dial, visible movement and substantial mix of materials. He characterizes the watch as conspicuous and says it is unlikely to be overlooked, while also finding the grouped display easier to digest than its busy appearance might suggest. Those are his judgments, not a claim that every wearer will find the dial legible or the size comfortable.
Felix Scholz’s 2015 review foregrounds the Ferrari partnership and the fusion of watchmaking and automotive cues. He wrote: “If you love fast cars and fine watches the latest limited edition Hublot for Ferrari will get your engine revving.”

Historical price and buying checks
Time+Tide reported an Australian recommended retail price of A$44,800 in 2015. That is a historical Australian price, not a present-day valuation. The cited reviews do not establish current availability or a present transaction price.
- Confirm that the reference on the watch and its paperwork is 401.OJ.0123.VR; check service records as well as warranty documentation.
- Assess the condition of the case, carbon bezel, sapphire components, push-pieces and deployant clasp on the specific example.
- Check that the strap configuration and any replacement parts fit the watch; the period reviews do not establish compatibility for aftermarket straps.
- Ask the seller to document condition, provenance and what is included. A 500-piece edition count does not by itself establish authenticity, condition or market value.
How to read the Ferrari connection
The Big Bang Ferrari King Gold Carbon belongs to Hublot’s Ferrari collaboration, but collaboration models are not interchangeable. Hublot’s 2019 press release about the distinct Classic Fusion Ferrari GT and HUB1280 calibre provides broader context for the partnership, not specifications for this Big Bang. In particular, neither that model’s movement nor the current tourbillon’s HUB6035 should be attributed to the 401.OJ.0123.VR.
