Yes, the 42 mm Big Bang MECA-10 is a meaningful evolution of Hublot’s 2016 design, chiefly in its smaller case and revised presentation of the mechanics. It retains the original’s central idea: an openworked, manually wound watch with a ten-day power reserve. Hublot’s specifications establish what the current Frosted Carbon model is designed to offer; they do not establish superior accuracy, long-term reliability, or value.
What is the current Hublot Big Bang MECA-10 42 mm?
The current Frosted Carbon model is reference 444.QN.1170.NR. Hublot lists a 42 mm matt-black frosted-carbon case and bezel, a matte-black skeleton dial, and its HUB1205 manufacture manual-winding skeleton movement. The listed power reserve is 10 days, and the stated water resistance is 100 m / 10 ATM. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently tested results. Hublot’s product page also specifies an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, black Velcro-fastener fabric strap, and microblasted black ceramic sport buckle.
How does the 42 mm model evolve the original?
Hublot dates the original Big Bang MECA-10 to 2016. The company describes its construction as a ring-shaped base plate carrying attached bridges. For the new model, Hublot says it retained the distinctive construction while refining the open display and reducing the dimensions to fit a 42 mm Big Bang case. In Hublot’s product-page wording, the challenge was to preserve what made the MECA-10 original while reducing its dimensions “without compromising its performance.” That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent performance finding.
A 2025 account by Jack Forster at The 1916 Company describes the original as 45 mm and the reintroduced version as 42 mm. It also reports three straight-line bridges in the newer movement architecture and a combined reserve display in place of the older indications. That makes the change more than a smaller case: the mechanics are presented differently, while the recognizable openworked, hand-wound, long-reserve proposition remains. Whether the 42 mm case wears better is a matter of fit and preference; no comparative wear assessment is established here. The 1916 Company’s 2025 account attributes to Hublot the explanation that the watch stops after ten days to avoid using the final, low-torque barrel turns, even though running time exceeds ten days.

What do the power-reserve displays show?
Hublot says the current HUB1205 is powered by two mainspring barrels and shows remaining autonomy digitally in days. The current product page does not provide a detailed operating description of that display.
The official instruction manual is for the earlier HUB1201 movement, not HUB1205. It describes two parallel barrels, a rack-driven dual display, a red indication during the final two days, and remaining days on a 0–10 scale. Those HUB1201-specific details should not be assumed to describe the HUB1205. The retailer’s account says the newer layout combines the older reserve indications, but the available official manual does not independently document the HUB1205 display. Hublot’s MECA-10 instruction manual is useful for its stated HUB1201 instructions, with that movement-generation distinction in mind.

How do you wind the MECA-10?
For the HUB1201 covered by Hublot’s manual, keep the crown in its neutral, pushed-in position and turn it clockwise until resistance is felt. The manual does not support a universal number of crown turns for every MECA-10 reference. Pulling the crown to the time-setting position is a separate operation; follow the instructions for the specific movement and reference in hand.
What should owners know about straps and care?
Changing the strap
The manual describes Hublot’s One Click interchangeable strap and buckle system. It says to press the release buttons at six and twelve o’clock to detach the strap. That system does not establish that a generic strap will fit, and model-specific compatibility and current replacement availability are not specified here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWater resistance and servicing
Hublot’s manual recommends a complete overhaul every three to five years and notes that environmental exposure and repeated shocks can affect water resistance over time. It also advises rinsing the watch after seawater exposure. This is general manual guidance, not a service-cost estimate or a guarantee that a particular used watch remains water resistant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the 42 mm MECA-10 worth considering?
The case-size reduction and revised presentation make this a substantive design evolution, while the core concept remains familiar. The published specifications do not establish that the newer watch is more accurate, more reliable over time, or better value than the original. A purchase decision therefore turns on whether the 42 mm proportions, skeletonized display, manual winding, and ten-day stated reserve suit your preferences—not on an unproven performance advantage.
