The Hyetis Crossbow was announced in 2013 as a luxury Swiss mechanical smartwatch, pairing an automatic movement with a claimed 41-megapixel camera, GPS, biometric sensing and wireless connectivity. Its founder, Arny Kapshitzer, pitched it as a way to unite traditional watchmaking with connected technology. But planned deliveries slipped, customers sought refunds, and later reporting did not establish that the watch reached buyers at scale. A functional presentation was reported in 2015; a successful retail launch remains unverified.
What the Hyetis Crossbow was supposed to be
Geneva-based Hyetis presented the Crossbow in August 2013 as a hybrid rather than a conventional smartwatch: a traditional-looking watch with a Swiss-made automatic movement for timekeeping, plus a separate electronic system for a digital display and smart features. Hyetis marketed it as Swiss-made and said it used a Swiss-made automatic movement; the available reporting does not establish where every component was manufactured.
The concept aimed to combine luxury-watch cues—titanium, ceramic elements and sapphire crystal—with a camera at or near 12 o’clock, phone connectivity and an array of sensors. Contemporary coverage largely relayed Hyetis promotional specifications; it was not a body of independent product testing. The distinction matters: a feature appearing in an announcement is not proof that it worked in a finished retail watch.

Why the mechanical movement was central to the pitch
In the Crossbow concept, the mechanical movement and electronics had different jobs. The automatic movement was meant to keep time in the conventional watchmaking sense; the camera, display, sensors and wireless functions depended on electronic hardware and batteries. The movement was not described as powering the smart features. In principle, depleted electronics could leave mechanical timekeeping intact, but the digital functions would still be unavailable until power returned.
That division was the product’s most distinctive idea—and a source of complexity. Hyetis was attempting to package two systems with different power needs, engineering constraints and service requirements in one luxury object. A mechanical movement could not solve software compatibility, battery life, camera performance or the practical challenge of supporting a connected device over time.

What founder Arny Kapshitzer said in the interview
In an interview with Swissinfo, founder Arny Kapshitzer framed the Crossbow first as a timepiece, not merely a wrist computer. His market thesis was that people who increasingly checked the time on their phones might be receptive to a new kind of watch, and that established Swiss brands risked ignoring connected watches. He said Swiss brands had rejected the project and positioned Hyetis toward affluent international buyers.
Kapshitzer also described ambitious commercial expectations: the first run of roughly 500 watches was reportedly nearly or effectively sold, and the company sought about 1% of the global smartwatch market while projecting tens of millions of Swiss francs in 2014 revenue. Those were statements of sales interest and forecast, not evidence that 500 completed watches shipped or that the revenue target was met. The contrast between confident positioning and later fulfillment problems became central to the Crossbow story.

From promised delivery to a difficult-to-verify product
- August 2013: Hyetis announced the Crossbow. Early reports described the feature set, a roughly $1,200 price and a limited initial series; an early account said delivery was expected by the end of 2013. Master Horologer
- 2014: The schedule slipped. Swiss media reported customer complaints and refund concerns. In August, Tribune de Genève described investors seeking reassurance and customers facing delays.
- December 2014 and January 2015 reporting: Le Temps reported that the website had gone offline, postponements had continued and customers were concerned. It said it could not verify that a Hyetis-branded smartwatch had been delivered. Le Temps

The 41-megapixel camera
The camera resolution was one of the Crossbow’s most memorable claims, but megapixel count alone does not establish image quality. The available reporting does not supply enough independent evidence to determine whether a finished Crossbow camera performed as advertised: it lacks sample photographs, independent resolution tests, and adequate sensor and lens information. The claim should be understood as widely reported, not as independently validated performance.

Battery life and water resistance
The reported four-day battery life was a company claim, not a measured result under stated test conditions. Water resistance is more uncertain still: contemporary sources conflict between 250 meters/25 ATM and a 15,000-meter pressure claim. Without a verified test or certification record, neither number supports treating the Crossbow as a proven dive watch.
Swiss-made, units sold and units delivered
Hyetis marketed the watch as Swiss-made, and reports described a Swiss-made automatic movement. That does not establish that every component originated in Switzerland or document formal certification. Likewise, reports that the initial 500 were nearly or effectively sold refer to claimed demand, not confirmed delivery. The record supports a real announced project and a later reported functional presentation, but not a verified count of retail units reaching customers.

Was the Crossbow a success, a prototype or a failed preorder?
The strongest evidence-based description is an ambitious smartwatch project that reached at least a prototype or demonstration stage but did not achieve documented commercial fulfillment at scale. It was not merely a paper concept: the project was publicly promoted, and a 2015 report described a functional presentation. Yet missed schedules, refund concerns and the inability of later reporting to verify delivered watches outweigh early claims of near-sellout demand when judging whether it became a retail product.
For anyone encountering a Crossbow listing now, treat it as an obscure collectible or prototype-related object, not a supported modern smartwatch. A buyer would need to establish provenance and serial details independently and confirm the actual condition of the mechanical movement and electronics. Do not assume that batteries, phone pairing, software or warranty support remain available, or pay a premium on the strength of the camera or Swiss-made claims alone.
