Rolex’s latest Day-Date dial program is not a redesign. It is a carefully controlled expansion of texture, color, gem-setting and finishing: the 2024 releases broadened the Day-Date 40 and 36, while the 2026 Day-Date 40 added green aventurine and a proprietary gold alloy. The result is more genuine variety than a simple color refresh—but also more costly ways to configure essentially the same watch.
Rolex summarized the strategy as “An expression for every face. A personality for every dial.” The important question is which changes alter the watch’s visual character and which merely multiply expensive choices.
The 2024 Day-Date 40 dials
Slate ombré lacquer
The slate ombré dial fades from a darker center toward the edge, giving the otherwise flat surface a changing sense of depth. Rolex also introduced faceted, deconstructed Roman numerals and faceted pink-gold markers on this type of Day-Date 40 dial. Those angular appliques catch light differently as the wrist moves, so the effect is structural rather than simply a new shade of grey.
Pearlized white mother-of-pearl
The pearlized white mother-of-pearl dial uses natural shell selected for its individual pattern and iridescence. No two pieces of shell produce exactly the same visual grain. Ten baguette-cut diamonds serve as hour markers, adding a regular, high-contrast geometry over an organic background. This is the most obviously material-driven of the 2024 Day-Date 40 releases: the surface itself, not just its color, is the feature.

The 2024 Day-Date 36 dials
White lacquer with deconstructed Roman numerals
The white-lacquer Day-Date 36 brings the faceted, deconstructed Roman-numeral language previously associated with the 40 mm model to the smaller case. Rolex says each applique is produced through at least seven operations. On a clean white ground, the sculpted numerals and faceted markers become the dominant detail, giving this configuration a more graphic and architectural appearance than a conventional polished index dial.
Blue-green on Everose gold
The blue-green dial is offered on an Everose-gold Day-Date 36 and uses ten baguette-cut diamonds as hour markers. Rolex also shows a version with a bezel set with 60 trapeze-cut diamonds. That combination is substantially denser visually than the plain-metal-bezel alternatives: the dial supplies saturated color and ten linear gems, while the bezel creates a continuous perimeter of diamond shapes.
Rolex pairs the 2024 examples with Everose-, white- or yellow-gold President bracelets according to the selected configuration. The announcement does not define one bracelet metal for every dial across every market, so the exact pairing must be verified for the reference being considered.

What arrived for the Day-Date 40 in 2026
Green aventurine
The 2026 Day-Date 40 adds a bright green aventurine dial. Aventurine is a stone surface rather than lacquer or shell, so its appeal comes from depth and natural-looking variation instead of a uniform painted field. Rolex calls the result “More than a colour – an effect.” That description is apt: the green is the headline, but the stone’s internal sparkle and uneven visual character keep the dial from reading like a flat green sunburst.

18 ct Jubilee Gold
The aventurine release also introduces 18 ct Jubilee Gold, a proprietary alloy developed and produced in-house. Rolex describes it as “Glowing with tones of tender yellow, warm grey and soft pink.” It is therefore not merely a different dial option; the case and bracelet metal change the color relationship between the green stone, the hands, the markers and the surrounding gold.
Day-Date 36 versus Day-Date 40
The two sizes share the same Day-Date architecture and Rolex calibre 3255 family. The meaningful differences in this program are the dial treatments and the references with which Rolex pairs them, not a different timekeeping system.

Both cases are listed at 36 mm or 40 mm respectively, and both use the same display layout: the weekday written in full at 12 o’clock and the date at 3 o’clock. The Day-Date remains a precious-metal watch, with Rolex offering 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold and 950 platinum across the collection.
How the materials change the watch on the wrist
Lacquer: controlled, graphic clarity
White and slate lacquer provide the most uniform backgrounds. That makes the faceted numerals easy to read and lets their machining supply the visual interest. The slate ombré version adds movement from center to edge without introducing the irregularity of a natural material.
Mother-of-pearl: organic variation
Mother-of-pearl is the choice for a dial that will not look identical from one example to the next. Its iridescence can shift with the angle of light, while the ten baguette diamonds impose a precise, repeating structure.

Aventurine: depth before decoration
Green aventurine is the strongest choice if the dial material itself is the reason to buy. It provides a stone-like depth that a green lacquer or sunburst would not reproduce. Because Rolex does not state a new marker count for the 2026 configuration, its novelty is primarily the surface and the Jubilee Gold alloy rather than a newly advertised numeral system.
Diamonds: a deliberate increase in density
Ten baguette markers create a crisp, linear sparkle. Adding the 60-trapeze-diamond bezel to the blue-green Everose version changes the entire watch’s visual weight, making it a jewelry-forward configuration rather than a restrained dial variation.

It is worth the premium only if you want a natural stone effect and the new alloy to be the point of the watch. The 2026 release represents two genuine material changes—aventurine and Jubilee Gold—rather than a renamed green colorway. If you prefer legibility, restraint or a dial that looks consistent from one example to another, the white lacquer or slate ombré versions make a clearer case. If you want maximum individuality, mother-of-pearl and aventurine offer variation that paint cannot.

Which Day-Date dial looks best?
- Best for architectural detail: the slate ombré Day-Date 40, whose gradient and faceted deconstructed numerals work as one design.
- Best for organic luxury: the pearlized white mother-of-pearl Day-Date 40, especially if changing iridescence matters more than uniformity.
- Best for a cleaner, smaller watch: the white-lacquer Day-Date 36, where the seven-operation appliques provide detail without a jeweled bezel.
- Best for jewelry impact: the blue-green Everose Day-Date 36 with its ten baguette markers and optional 60-diamond bezel.
- Best for a genuinely new 2026 material story: the green aventurine Day-Date 40 in Jubilee Gold.
What has not changed
The Day-Date remains Rolex’s flagship precious-metal calendar watch, first launched in 1956 as the first wristwatch to display the weekday written in full. The arc-shaped weekday window and date window change simultaneously and instantaneously, with 26 language choices available for the weekday display.
Inside, calibre 3255 is self-winding and uses Rolex’s Chronergy escapement, Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. Rolex states an approximately 70-hour power reserve and Superlative Chronometer precision of −2/+2 seconds per day for the finished watch. The Oyster case is rated to 100 metres (330 feet) of water resistance. The signature President bracelet, created for the 1956 launch, uses three semi-circular links.
The hot take
Rolex has done more than issue a handful of new colors. The brand moved ombré treatment onto the Day-Date 40, used pearlized mother-of-pearl on that model for the first time, transferred the faceted deconstructed Roman-numeral treatment to the Day-Date 36, and introduced blue-green to an Everose version in 2024. In 2026, aventurine and Jubilee Gold add another material layer.
That is meaningful craft and manufacturing work, but the buying decision is still about choosing a personality within an unchanged Day-Date formula. The extra configurations are valuable when the material, finishing or gem-setting changes what you see on the wrist. They are less compelling when they merely turn a familiar color into another expensive reference.
