The HYT H1 tells the hour with a moving boundary between two liquids inside a capillary. A mechanical movement drives the liquid display through flexible reservoirs, making the watch a distinctive blend of traditional watchmaking and fluid mechanics.
How do you read the HYT H1?
Look at the curved capillary around the dial. The boundary between its colored and transparent fluids—the meniscus—points to the current hour. HYT describes the colored fluid as representing the recent past and the transparent fluid as the forthcoming future; the dividing point marks the present. The liquid display is for the hours. The cited H1 auction example also has small seconds and a power-reserve indication, but details and functions vary by reference.
How does the liquid display work?
Two flexible reservoirs are connected to a fine capillary. The mechanical mechanism compresses one reservoir while expanding the other, pushing the fluids along the tube. This is not a digital or electronic display: the movement physically drives the liquid through the capillary. The visible fluid boundary is the indication, while the watch’s mechanical system controls its movement.
What makes the H1 distinctive, and when did it debut?
HYT dates the H1 Titanium black DLC world premiere to 2012 and records that it received the GPHG Innovation Watch Prize. The milestone applies to that named H1 version; it should not be taken to mean every H1 reference has the same case material or finish. HYT’s H1 timeline

What specifications can vary between H1 references?
Start with the exact reference rather than assuming that a specification from one H1 applies to all of them. Phillips cataloged a 2014 example, reference 148-DL-21-GF-RU, with the following details:

What should you check before buying a pre-owned H1?
Verify the watch as an individual example. A shared model name does not establish that two H1s have the same reference, dimensions, movement, condition, or included accessories.
- Reference and variant: Confirm the reference from the watch’s documentation and compare it with the seller’s description.
- Case and movement: Check the case material and dimensions, movement caliber, winding type, and indicated functions against details for that reference.
- Fluid display: Ask for a clear view of the capillary and confirm that the meniscus moves and resets as expected. Request service documentation if available.
- Condition and history: Review service and ownership records, and inspect the case and display for condition issues. The liquid system makes its own condition an important part of evaluating the watch.
- Set contents: Confirm individually whether the box, warranty papers, manual, extra strap, and service records are included. Contents listed for one auction example do not establish what accompanies another watch.

How should you care for and store an H1?
HYT’s H1 user guide says the meniscus display works while the watch is worn between 0°C and +50°C. It also gives a specific procedure for extended non-use: HYT H1 user guide
- Unscrew and pull the crown to the time-setting position.
- Allow the colored fluid to complete its retrograde into its own reservoir.
- Leave the crown in the time-setting position while the watch remains unused.
The guide recommends replacing the gaskets every three years. It warns that temperature changes, moisture, perspiration, and repeated impacts can affect water resistance over time. Follow the guide for the particular watch and have its water resistance checked by an appropriate watch service provider; do not assume ordinary-watch service procedures are sufficient for the H1’s fluid display.
