How does the HYT H4 Metropolis light its dial?
HYT’s H4 User Guide describes a mechanically powered light system: turning the dedicated crown clockwise winds the dynamo, and pressing the crown’s push-piece activates the light. The guide says a fully wound generator can be triggered repeatedly; holding the button continuously drains its stored energy. HYT summarizes the function as: “This function activates the light system for your watch.”
In his 30 December 2016 hands-on report, JX Su of SJX Watches describes two blue LEDs concealed beneath the rider at six o’clock and reports approximately five seconds of illumination per activation. That duration and LED placement are details from the hands-on account, not specifications stated in the official guide.
How the H4’s fluid hour display works
The hour is read where two liquids meet inside a capillary. As the hour progresses, bellows drive the colored liquid’s meniscus along the tube; at the end of the cycle, it returns to begin again. The liquids remain separate, according to the SJX hands-on report. Minutes are shown by a conventional hand, while seconds have a separate indication.

What makes the H4 Metropolis unusual
The watch brings together two separate mechanical ideas: a hand-wound movement for timekeeping and a crown-wound generator for temporary dial illumination. The lighting is activated on demand, so it should not be understood as continuously glowing lume. HYT’s guide establishes how the system is wound and triggered; the available sources do not establish comparative brightness, runtime against other lighting systems, or long-term performance.
