Once you judge it on that narrower brief, its bright display, dual-frequency GPS, LTE, sleep tracking, outdoor controls, and multi-day Wear OS battery become much easier to appreciate.
This article covers the original 2024 Galaxy Watch Ultra and its 2025 refresh. Samsung announced the newer Galaxy Watch Ultra2 in July 2026, but its hardware and features should not be treated as interchangeable with the earlier Ultra. Check the exact model before buying.

Why I nearly gave up on it
The Galaxy Watch Ultra looks as though it should be a dedicated outdoor sports computer. Its large titanium case, bright screen, physical controls, orange Quick Button, LTE connectivity, and rugged positioning all make that promise.
But the first ownership experience can feel mismatched. The case is large, the price is high, the battery is merely good rather than class-leading, and Samsung Health does not provide the same depth of training analysis found in Garmin, Coros, Polar, or Suunto ecosystems. Some of Samsung’s most appealing health features are also restricted to Galaxy phones.

That mismatch explains the disappointment. The Ultra’s hardware says “expedition watch,” while its software is primarily a polished Android smartwatch with useful outdoor abilities. It is best understood as an outdoor-friendly Samsung smartwatch, not a specialist sports computer.
What the Galaxy Watch Ultra is actually good for
1. One smartwatch for everyday life and recreational outdoor activity
This is the Ultra’s strongest use case. It handles notifications, calls, payments, apps, sleep tracking, workouts, navigation, and health summaries while offering more durable hardware and better endurance than Samsung’s standard watches.
For a Samsung Galaxy-phone owner who hikes on weekends, runs a few times a week, cycles, swims, or simply wants a watch that can tolerate rougher use, that combination is valuable. You do not need to swap between a daily smartwatch and a sports watch for ordinary outdoor activity.
The large display is particularly useful when checking workout data or navigation outdoors. The programmable Quick Button can launch a workout or another supported action without hunting through menus, and LTE allows occasional phone-free calls, messages, streaming, and emergency communication where coverage is available.
2. Hiking and trail use
The Ultra is more convincing on a trail than older Galaxy Watches. Its dual-frequency GPS can improve positioning in difficult environments, while the bright screen, physical shortcut, route-retracing tools, and emergency siren are practical additions for hiking.
Independent testing by DC Rainmaker found notably improved GPS performance and reported approximately 5% battery use per hour in one set of GPS testing. That is useful evidence of capability, not a guaranteed result for every route or owner.
Track Back-style route retracing and offline navigation can also be helpful, but navigation depends on the app, map coverage, downloaded data, phone setup, and region. Download routes or maps before leaving coverage, and do not treat the watch as a substitute for a satellite communicator, paper map, compass, or trip plan on remote outings.
Trees, cliffs, buildings, tunnels, weather, wrist position, and route geometry can still affect GPS accuracy. Dual-frequency GPS improves the odds; it does not make the watch infallible.
3. Sleep tracking and simple recovery guidance
The feature that can change the ownership experience is not necessarily GPS. It is the way Samsung Health turns several measurements into a relatively simple daily picture.

Sleep Score, sleep-stage estimates, overnight heart rate, blood oxygen, activity history, and Energy Score can help users notice patterns without interpreting a large collection of separate charts. Energy Score combines sleep, recent activity, and overnight heart-rate and HRV-related signals into a wellness-oriented daily indication.
That simplicity can be more useful than a technically richer dashboard. A prompt to sleep more, take it easier, or remain active may be easier to act on than a page of training metrics.

However, Energy Score is not a clinical measurement of readiness, and sleep-stage or recovery estimates should be treated as trends rather than definitive diagnoses. The watch must also be worn consistently and fitted properly; a watch that is too uncomfortable to wear overnight defeats much of this benefit.
4. Phone-free moments through LTE
LTE is one of the clearest reasons to choose the Ultra over a cheaper Bluetooth-only watch. You can leave the phone behind for a run, short hike, swim session, or errand while retaining selected calling, messaging, streaming, navigation, and safety functions.
This does not mean the watch replaces a phone in every situation. LTE coverage, carrier support, app compatibility, battery level, and emergency settings all matter. LTE can also reduce battery life, particularly in weak-signal areas.
5. Bright-screen workout control
The Ultra is good at making routine workouts convenient. It can record runs, rides, walks, swims, and gym sessions, show heart-rate and zone information, provide running metrics and VO₂ max-style estimates, and present a unified history in Samsung Health.

The Ultra does the first well enough for many recreational users. Dedicated sports platforms generally do more with structured workouts, training load, race preparation, recovery trends, multisport workflows, route planning, and external sensors.
Independent reviews found better GPS performance than older Galaxy Watch generations, although heart-rate results can vary with fit, movement, workout intensity, and sensor placement. For high-intensity training where heart-rate accuracy matters most, a compatible chest strap may be a better choice if the selected app supports it.
Battery reality: good for Wear OS, not Garmin good
Samsung advertises up to 100 hours for the Galaxy Watch Ultra, but that figure applies to Power Saving Mode. It is not a normal-use endurance claim and should not be compared directly with standard-mode figures from other brands. Samsung lists a 590 mAh battery for the Ultra model and a June 2026 US MSRP of $649.99 for Ultra LTE models on its wearables price sheet.

Reviewer results are more useful when presented as ranges. Android Authority reported roughly three days during review use, including GPS activity. Testing of the original Ultra reported roughly 70 hours with heavy GPS use and the always-on display enabled. Those are reviewer-specific results, not promises for every owner.

- Always-on display and screen brightness.
- GPS recording settings, including dual-band mode.
- LTE use and signal strength.
- Music streaming and navigation.
- Continuous heart-rate measurements.
- Sleep tracking and notification volume.
- Temperature, battery age, and software version.

The useful conclusion is simple: the battery is good for a Wear OS watch and normally sufficient for overnight tracking plus a day or two of ordinary use. It is not comparable with many Garmin or Huawei watches for long GPS-heavy trips. If you are starting an extended activity below roughly 30–40%, charging first is sensible.
Samsung phone versus other Android phone
This is a purchase decision, not a footnote. The Ultra can pair with compatible Android phones, but the fullest experience is reserved for Samsung Galaxy devices.

Samsung’s compatibility guidance identifies ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, and sleep-apnea features as requiring a Samsung Galaxy phone, in addition to regional, software, and device requirements.
That means a non-Samsung Android buyer should not purchase the Ultra expecting every health feature shown in Samsung’s advertising. Core tracking may work well, but restricted features can materially change the value of the watch.

Health features: useful screening, not medical answers
Samsung Health Monitor includes features such as ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, blood-pressure monitoring, and sleep-apnea monitoring where supported. Availability depends on the country, phone, software, calibration, and regulatory requirements.
Blood-pressure monitoring requires calibration with a cuff, and the watch is not a replacement for clinical blood-pressure measurement. Sleep-apnea monitoring can screen for signs; it does not establish a diagnosis. ECG and irregular-rhythm features may prompt medical follow-up, but they do not diagnose every heart condition.
Samsung’s Health Monitor information and support documentation should be checked for the current region and device requirements. Treat these functions as screening and wellness tools, not proof that you are healthy, unhealthy, or fully recovered.
Where the Ultra falls short
It is not a true Garmin replacement
The Ultra can record a run or hike and give you useful health summaries. It is less persuasive as the primary watch for marathon, ultra, triathlon, or expedition training.

Garmin, Coros, Polar, and Suunto generally offer deeper structured workouts, training-load analysis, recovery planning, long-duration GPS endurance, route tools, multisport features, and sports-sensor ecosystems. Their trade-off is usually a less complete smartwatch experience: fewer rich apps, less seamless calling and messaging, and weaker integration with Samsung Health.
Choose a dedicated sports platform if training analytics are the reason you are buying a watch. Choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra if you want those capabilities in a smartwatch-first package and can accept less depth.
The case is large and comfort matters
The original and 2025 Ultra family uses a 47 mm case. That creates space for a larger display and battery, but it also makes the watch visually aggressive and potentially uncomfortable for smaller wrists.
Consider your wrist circumference, whether you sleep in a watch, how sleeves or gloves fit over it, and whether the case or strap irritates your skin. A watch that stays in a drawer cannot provide sleep or recovery data. If possible, try the Ultra on before buying.
Titanium and rugged ratings do not make the watch indestructible. The screen, seals, buttons, electronics, and strap remain vulnerable to impact, chemicals, water conditions, and wear. Follow Samsung’s limitations rather than interpreting “rugged” as unlimited protection.
The hardware looks more professional than the software feels
This is probably the central reason some owners feel let down. The case resembles a specialist outdoor instrument, but Samsung Health can feel less “pro” than Garmin Connect for long-term training plans, race preparation, recovery trends, multisport workflows, advanced route planning, and external-sensor use.
The Ultra is not failing when it behaves like a smartwatch. The problem is that its branding encourages buyers to expect a full sports computer.
It is not automatically a dive computer
Swimming and water-resistance capabilities should not be confused with dedicated scuba-diving functionality. Do not transfer the announced dive-computer positioning of the newer Ultra2 to the original or 2025 Galaxy Watch Ultra. Samsung’s 2026 announcement discusses a future Mares dive-computer app for Ultra2, which is a newer-generation feature direction, not evidence that the original Ultra is a dive computer.

The original Galaxy Watch Ultra launched in 2024. Samsung’s 2025 refresh retained the main design and added storage and a Titanium Blue finish. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2, announced in July 2026, is a newer generation with its own hardware, software, battery, health, and availability details.

Retail listings may use “Galaxy Watch Ultra” loosely, so check the model name, generation, storage, finish, included band, LTE status, and warranty before buying. Do not assume that an Ultra2 feature or battery claim applies to an older Ultra.
For the earlier Ultra family, Samsung’s official product page lists the 47 mm case, LTE option, and up-to-100-hour Power Saving Mode claim. The newer generation should be judged from its own official specifications.
How to set it up for the best experience
- Pair it with a Samsung Galaxy phone if possible. This gives you the broadest access to Samsung Health and Samsung Health Monitor.
- Install or update Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health. Install Samsung Health Monitor where it is supported.
- Program the Quick Button. Set it to workout launch, flashlight, stopwatch, or another supported shortcut that matches your routine.
- Prepare navigation before leaving. Download maps or route data in the selected navigation app before heading into poor coverage.
- Choose GPS settings for the outing. Use high-accuracy or dual-band GPS in difficult environments; use less demanding settings when battery matters more.
- Enable route retracing or Track Back-style tools before starting. Confirm that the feature is active rather than assuming it can reconstruct every route automatically.
- Review emergency settings. Add emergency contacts and understand how SOS, fall detection, and the siren work in your region.
- Wear it snugly and above the wrist bone. This matters for workout heart rate, sleep tracking, and other sensor readings.
- Build a charging routine. Charge before long activities and avoid starting an extended GPS session with a low battery.
- Use an external heart-rate sensor when needed. For serious high-intensity training, a chest strap may provide more useful data if the chosen app supports it.
Menu labels can change with Wear OS, Samsung Health, and regional software updates, so use Samsung’s current support instructions if a setting is not where expected.
Who should buy the Galaxy Watch Ultra?
Buy it if you:
- Use a Samsung Galaxy phone.
- Want a smartwatch first and a fitness watch second.
- Hike, run, cycle, swim, or train recreationally.
- Value a very bright display and rugged construction.
- Want sleep tracking and simple Samsung Health summaries.
- Need LTE for occasional phone-free use.
- Can comfortably wear a large watch.
- Want better endurance and outdoor controls than a standard Galaxy Watch.
For this buyer, the Ultra is especially compelling at a discount or when its LTE and rugged hardware will actually be used.
Choose a regular Galaxy Watch instead if you:
- Mainly want notifications, payments, sleep tracking, casual workouts, and basic health features.
- Have a smaller wrist or dislike sleeping in large watches.
- Do not need LTE, the larger battery, dual-frequency GPS, or outdoor controls.
- Want to spend less.
Samsung’s June 2026 US MSRP sheet lists Galaxy Watch8 models below the Ultra, starting at $349.99 for Bluetooth 40 mm and $399.99 for LTE 40 mm. The regular watch is the more rational choice when the Ultra’s specific advantages would sit unused.
Choose Garmin, Coros, Polar, or Suunto if you:
- Train for marathons, ultras, triathlons, or long expeditions.
- Need structured workouts, advanced training load, recovery planning, and long GPS endurance.
- Want fewer charging interruptions.
- Prioritize sports analytics over apps, calls, and notifications.
- Need a mature external-sensor and sports-accessory ecosystem.
That is not a claim that one brand is universally better. It is a different priority: deeper sports tooling and endurance in exchange for a less complete smartwatch experience.
Choose Apple Watch Ultra only if you use an iPhone
Apple Watch Ultra is relevant to iPhone owners or people willing to switch platforms. It is not a practical alternative for a Galaxy-phone owner who wants to remain on Android. Check Apple’s current buying page and compatibility information for the model available in your region.
Final verdict
The Galaxy Watch Ultra is good at being a durable, bright, long-lasting Samsung smartwatch that can handle real outdoor activity. It is not good at replacing every dedicated sports watch.
Once its role is narrowed to that first job, the hardware starts to make sense. Samsung Galaxy owners who want one watch for daily life, sleep, workouts, hikes, LTE, and health summaries will find a compelling package. Serious endurance athletes, small-wrist users, non-Samsung owners seeking restricted health features, and casual buyers who would be equally happy with a regular Galaxy Watch should choose differently.
