In a 2022 interview, an anonymous real-estate professional explained why he bought a counterfeit Rolex Daytona: he felt shut out of buying the genuine watch, considered pre-owned prices too high, and valued the status its familiar design seemed to project. His account is a personal story, not evidence about counterfeit-watch buyers generally.
Why did he buy a fake Rolex Daytona?
In Time+Tide’s 13 April 2022 Watch Confessions interview, the anonymous interviewee said he decided to pursue a genuine Daytona after his business had gone well. He recalled a retailer describing the Daytona as a “special watch” reserved for established clients. He felt dismissed by the exchange, then considered the pre-owned market but found its prices too high.
He said he bought a replica he called a “super-clone” for about $1,000. That amount is what he reported paying, not a verified market price. He described the replica’s materials and movement and pointed to a difference in the color of the Daytona lettering, but the interview did not independently inspect or authenticate the watch.
What did the watch mean to him?
The interviewee said he works in real estate and believed clients respond to visible signs of success. In his view, a recognisable luxury-watch design suited the image he wanted to present. That is his explanation of his motivation—not evidence that wearing the replica won clients, improved business results, or changed how others perceived him.

His feelings about the watch were not simply a rejection of the genuine product. He said he would prefer an authentic Rolex and hoped the replica would be a stop-gap, while also acknowledging that he enjoyed wearing it. The account therefore captures a tension between wanting the genuine watch and enjoying the appearance of a counterfeit one.
