I Wore the Gen 2 Ray-Ban Meta Glasses—and They Called My Cat Fat

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 can comment on what its camera sees, but an AI guess that a cat looks “fat” is not a veterinary body-condition score. Here is what the glasses can actually do, why the result may be wrong, and what privacy and testing details matter.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 can look at a cat and generate a blunt visual description, but it cannot reliably determine whether the animal is overweight. The headline incident has not been independently verified, so the responsible conclusion is about the technology’s limitations—not a claim that the glasses diagnosed a real cat.

Short answer: Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses can look at a cat and produce an appearance-based description, but “fat” would be a blunt visual guess—not a measurement, diagnosis, or veterinary body-condition score. The specific cat incident behind this headline has not been independently verified, so it should not be presented as a documented test result without the original prompt, response, date, software version, and recording details.

That distinction does not make the experiment pointless. It exposes the more interesting question: what happens when a camera worn on your face turns a subjective pet-care question into a confident-sounding sentence?

What Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 actually is

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is a displayless pair of smart glasses made by Meta and EssilorLuxottica. They look like ordinary Ray-Bans, but add cameras, microphones, open-ear speakers, touch controls, Bluetooth connectivity, and access to Meta AI through a connected phone and the Meta AI app.

Meta announced the second generation on September 17, 2025. In the United States, the starting price was $379. Official configurations include Wayfarer, Skyler, and Headliner frame styles, with prescription and different lens options available on applicable models. Availability, pricing, lens choices, and AI features can vary by country and by software version.

For a reader considering Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 smart glasses, the important hardware changes are the ultra-wide 12-megapixel camera, 3K Ultra HD video capture, and a larger battery. Meta quotes up to eight hours of typical use, a charge to 50 percent in about 20 minutes, and up to 48 additional hours from the charging case. Ray-Ban separately warns that continuous audio streaming and voice assistance can reduce runtime to roughly five hours. In other words, eight hours is a moderate-use headline figure, not a guarantee for an entire day of constant AI conversations.

Can the glasses recognize a cat?

Yes—within the ordinary limits of camera-based visual AI. Meta AI on the glasses can answer questions about objects and scenes in front of the wearer. Supported examples include identifying landmarks and plants, reading or translating labels, and supplying contextual information about visible surroundings. Later software updates have expanded real-time, multimodal questions about what the camera sees.

A cat is therefore a reasonable subject for a visual-AI demonstration. You might ask what animal is in front of you, what color its coat appears to be, or what it is doing. The assistant may also comment on visible body shape.

But identifying “cat” and judging body condition are entirely different tasks. The camera can see an image. It cannot directly see the animal’s weight, muscle mass, breed proportions, age, medical history, or the distribution of fat beneath its fur.

Why a visual guess about a cat’s weight can be wrong

A language model may infer that a cat looks heavy from its silhouette and from patterns learned from photographs. That inference can be affected by:

  • Camera angle: A low camera pointed upward can make a body appear larger, while a top-down view can emphasize width.
  • Distance and lens perspective: A close ultra-wide camera can exaggerate nearby parts of the body.
  • Posture: A relaxed crouch, seated position, or stretched pose changes the apparent outline.
  • Fur: A long or dense coat can make a healthy cat look substantially larger.
  • Primordial pouch: Loose abdominal skin is normal in many cats and is not, by itself, evidence of obesity.
  • Breed and build: A large-framed cat and a small-framed cat cannot be judged by the same visual proportions.
  • Lighting: Shadows can hide the waist or make the abdomen look more pronounced.
  • Image context: A single frame does not reveal whether the cat has recently gained or lost weight.

So if the assistant says a cat looks “fat,” the accurate translation is closer to: the model made an uncertain appearance-based guess from one visual perspective. It is not the same as weighing the cat, calculating a body-condition score, or diagnosing obesity.

“Fat” is not a veterinary assessment

Veterinarians generally assess feline body condition using standardized visual assessment and palpation, commonly represented on a nine-point body-condition scale. That process considers features such as the waist, ribs, abdominal tuck, fat deposits, and the individual cat’s overall build. It is more informative than asking an AI to label one image.

If you are concerned about a cat’s weight, arrange a veterinary assessment rather than changing food portions based on the glasses’ answer. A professional opinion is particularly important after unexplained weight change, increased appetite, reduced grooming, breathing difficulty, reduced activity, vomiting, or other symptoms.

A sensible article or video should use wording such as “the glasses guessed that the cat looked heavy” or “the assistant made an appearance-based assessment.” It should not say that Meta AI diagnosed the cat or accurately determined its weight.

What a responsible test would need to record

The headline incident is not supported by a publicly located primary source, transcript, video, or corroborated report. If the original test was actually performed, a credible review should document the conditions instead of supplying a polished anecdote after the fact.

At minimum, record:

  1. The exact spoken prompt, including whether it asked whether the cat was “fat,” “overweight,” or something else.
  2. The cat’s distance from the glasses and whether the camera was above, level with, or below the animal.
  3. Lighting, posture, coat length, and whether the cat was moving.
  4. The glasses’ firmware version and the Meta AI app version.
  5. The country or market in which the test took place.
  6. The assistant’s complete response, including any uncertainty or qualification.
  7. Whether the answer was spoken through the glasses, displayed in the Meta AI app, or both.
  8. Whether ordinary video or a still photo was captured and saved.

A useful experiment would repeat the question from several angles and distances, then compare the replies. If the answer changes when the cat sits, stands, turns sideways, or moves into brighter light, that would demonstrate the system’s sensitivity to image context—not that one answer is correct.

Does the camera-recording light turn on?

Privacy behavior depends on what the glasses are doing. Ray-Ban says the front-facing capture LED signals ordinary photos, videos, and livestreams. It also says newer models can use the camera for certain AI functions—such as identifying a landmark or plant—without turning on the capture LED because those interactions are not intended to be shareable content.

Ray-Ban further states that AI images and video used for those features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history and that facial recognition is not used. Those are statements from Ray-Ban and Meta, not an independently audited guarantee that removes every privacy concern.

The practical distinction is important: asking what the glasses see is not necessarily the same as recording and saving a video. Nevertheless, a camera is still pointed at the cat, the room, and potentially other people. Ask permission before testing around guests, avoid treating the status light as a complete privacy solution, and explain clearly when an interaction involves visual AI.

The useful parts of Gen 2 are less sensational

The cat question makes a memorable headline, but it is not the strongest reason to buy these glasses. Their practical appeal is the combination of hands-free imaging, open-ear audio, and voice assistance in a familiar eyewear form factor.

  • Hands-free photos and video: The camera can capture what the wearer is seeing without reaching for a phone.
  • Open-ear sound: Music, calls, and spoken assistant replies leave the ears uncovered, although sound leakage and noisy environments remain considerations.
  • Visual questions: The assistant can comment on objects, labels, plants, landmarks, and other visible surroundings where the relevant feature is available in the wearer’s market.
  • Improved endurance: Gen 2’s rated battery life is a meaningful improvement over a short-session gadget, though constant audio and AI use can cut it substantially.
  • Higher-resolution capture: Gen 2 supports 3K video. Meta describes 3K capture as supporting up to 60 frames per second in its announcement, while Ray-Ban’s comparison material distinguishes 3K at 30 fps from 1080p at up to 60 fps. Always check the selected recording mode rather than assuming every 3K clip is 60 fps.

The glasses still depend on a phone connection and supported software for much of their intelligence. AI features can change over time and may not be available in every country. They also have no built-in display, so the spoken response—not an overlay in front of your eyes—is the main interaction.

Should you buy them for this cat experiment?

No, not for the purpose of getting a reliable feline weight assessment. Buy Gen 2 only if you also want wearable cameras, open-ear audio, hands-free calls, and voice-controlled visual assistance. The product’s camera can produce an interesting opinion about a cat, but the opinion is not a substitute for a scale or veterinarian.

Prescription wearers should check the exact Ray-Ban configuration rather than assume every frame accepts every lens. Ray-Ban offers prescription-capable combinations and optical-first Gen 2 styles in applicable markets, but lens availability and limits vary by model. Do not assume that an arbitrary third-party replacement lens is approved, safe, or compatible.

Owners who want a permanent desk charging setup may also consider a compatible charging dock or stand, but it is optional: the glasses already come with a charging case. Confirm compatibility with the precise Gen 2 frame and case design before buying, because “compatible with Ray-Ban Meta” does not automatically establish compatibility with every generation or accessory.

Verdict

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 can plausibly look at a cat and deliver a surprisingly direct visual description. That is a legitimate demonstration of hands-free multimodal AI—but not proof that the glasses know whether the cat is overweight.

The honest review conclusion is less funny and more useful: the glasses can turn a subjective image into a blunt sentence, while the answer remains probabilistic, context-limited, and medically unqualified. Their genuine strengths are the camera-and-audio form factor, improved battery life, 3K video, and hands-free contextual assistance. For a cat’s health, trust a veterinary body-condition assessment instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 tell whether a cat is overweight?

No. The glasses can make an appearance-based guess from an image, but they cannot measure weight or perform a veterinary body-condition assessment. Fur, posture, breed, camera angle, and lighting can all mislead the model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Ray-Ban Meta camera light turn on when asking Meta AI about a cat?

Ray-Ban says the capture LED signals ordinary photos, videos, and livestreams. It also says some AI visual queries can use the camera without turning on that LED. The exact behavior depends on the feature, so users should respect people and animals in view rather than relying on the light alone.

How much do Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses cost?

Meta announced Gen 2 on September 17, 2025, with a U.S. starting price of $379. Current prices, configurations, availability, and AI features may vary by market and over time.

What should I do if the AI’s comment makes me worry about my cat?

Use a veterinarian. Veterinary body-condition assessment combines visual examination and palpation and commonly uses a nine-point scale. Seek professional advice especially if the cat has unexplained weight changes or other symptoms.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Gen 2 Ray-Ban Meta glasses may comment that a cat looks heavy, but that is an appearance-based AI guess—not a weight measurement or veterinary diagnosis. The specific “called my cat fat” incident is not independently verified; any real test should document its prompt, conditions, software versions, and exact response.
