Some of the most enduring pieces of menswear began as signals of status, practical protection or hard-wearing work clothes. Their histories are not a definitive ranking: they show how men’s dress changed as ideas about formality, masculinity and everyday clothing shifted.
Why these pieces belong in menswear history
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s survey of menswear from 1715 to 2015 treats clothing as a cultural history, tracing changing styles and ideas of masculinity. Its range includes conspicuous eighteenth-century suits, nineteenth-century dandy refinement and twentieth-century mod styles. That long view is more useful than treating “iconic” as a timeless checklist: garments became meaningful in different places and for different reasons.

Four examples make those shifts especially clear: the suit and waistcoat, military rainwear, and denim work pants that later entered fashion. Their histories follow distinct paths—formal dress, protection and labor—rather than one linear march toward modern casualwear.

A vivid British suit of the 1770s
The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies one surviving suit as probably British and dates it to 1770–80. The Met describes it as comparatively plain and practical beside French fashions of the period. But “plain” did not mean colorless: the suit retains a vivid cyclamen hue. It complicates the idea that restraint in menswear has always meant subdued color. The Met’s object record provides the garment’s date and description.

The waistcoat as its own layer
A waistcoat was a distinct, vest-like garment worn over a shirt and beneath a coat. The Smithsonian’s example, dated 1755–70, illustrates how the silhouette and proportions of men’s dress changed during the eighteenth century. It is a reminder that the historical suit was a layered ensemble, not simply a jacket and trousers. The Smithsonian’s collection record describes the garment and its place in the outfit.
The trench coat: military protection with civilian appeal
The National Army Museum connects the trench coat’s military history to a 1901 request for Burberry to design a lightweight raincoat for soldiers. The museum describes officers wearing trench coats during the First World War; enlisted men were not permitted to wear them. In this account, the coat’s association with officers helped it acquire status before it became popular with civilians.

Its later life extended beyond the wardrobe: the museum notes screen appearances including Casablanca (1942), which became part of the coat’s cultural image. This is the museum’s account of one important development in military rainwear—not proof that one company invented every form of trench coat. The National Army Museum’s history sets out that distinction.
Denim jeans: from workwear to fashion
Denim’s history cannot be reduced to a single company. The Museum at FIT’s exhibition overview includes nineteenth-century denim work pants that predate Levi Strauss & Co.’s jeans production. The exhibition traces denim’s movement from workwear into fashion, showing how a durable material could take on new meanings beyond its original use.

That transition is what makes denim an enduring menswear story: the garment’s cultural reach grew beyond the labor context in which earlier examples were worn. The Museum at FIT presents denim across workwear and high fashion in its exhibition overview.

These examples became significant in different ways. The suit and waistcoat show how formal dress could express changing taste and silhouette; the trench coat moved from military protection into civilian life and popular culture; denim traveled from work clothes into fashion. None stands for every man or every era, and this selection is not a definitive canon. Together, however, they show why the history of menswear is about more than garments: it is also about who wore them, what they were for and how their meanings changed.
