The most reliable way to identify a Samsung watch is to find its complete model number, usually beginning with SM-. On the watch, open Settings → About watch. If it is paired with your phone, open Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → About Watch. Search that number on Samsung Support to confirm the family, generation, size, and Bluetooth or LTE variant. Appearance alone is not reliable because Samsung has reused similar designs across generations.
What “which Samsung watch?” can mean
Identification may involve several different details:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Family: Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch FE, Galaxy Fit, or Gear.
- Generation: Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch8, and so on.
- Variant: Standard, Classic, Pro, Ultra, or FE.
- Size: A case category such as 40mm, 41mm, 42mm, 43mm, 44mm, 45mm, 46mm, or 47mm.
- Connectivity: Bluetooth/Wi-Fi or LTE.
- Region: Country, carrier, and market-specific version.
- Retail SKU: A longer product code that may include color and sales-channel information.
The model number identifies the product type. The serial number identifies your individual unit. Do not use the serial number as a substitute when looking for manuals, chargers, bands, or compatibility information.

- Record the complete model number, serial number, software version, and—if shown—IMEI.
- Search the complete model number on Samsung’s Manuals and Software page.
Samsung says the About screen can show the model number, serial number, IMEI, software, storage, and battery information. Bluetooth-only watches do not have an IMEI. Menu labels vary by generation and software version; older models may show About device, About band, or Gear info → About device. See Samsung’s watch-information instructions for the current path.

Method 2: Use Galaxy Wearable
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the paired Android phone.
- Tap Watch settings.
- Tap About Watch.
- Copy the entire model number exactly as displayed.
Samsung’s model-and-serial-number guide confirms this route. The official Galaxy Wearable app is published by Samsung Electronics and is used to connect, manage, and update compatible wearables.
If the watch will not turn on
Use these sources in order:
- Turn the watch over and inspect the underside or back.
- Remove the band carefully if it hides the engraving or label.
- Photograph the markings instead of relying on a handwritten transcription.
- Check the original box, barcode label, receipt, order history, or carrier paperwork.
- Check previously registered products in Samsung Members or SmartThings Find if the watch was linked to your Samsung account.
- Search Samsung Support using any visible portion of the model number, then compare the result with the physical watch.
Prioritize the model number shown by the watch or Galaxy Wearable over the box. A used watch may have been placed in the wrong package, and regional replacement units may not match the packaging exactly.
Samsung model-family guide
This is a practical family-level guide, not an exhaustive worldwide list of every Bluetooth, LTE, carrier, color, and regional SKU. Confirm the complete number through Samsung.
| Representative model numbers | Likely family | Notes |
|---|---|---|

Galaxy Watch (2018) | Multiple sizes and Bluetooth/LTE versions |

Galaxy Watch Active | Smaller bezel-free Active model |

Galaxy Watch Active2 | 40mm and 44mm variants |
SM-R840–SM-R855 |
Galaxy Watch3 | Watch3 family |
SM-R860–SM-R895 |
Galaxy Watch4 / Watch4 Classic | First major Wear OS generation; standard and Classic versions |
SM-R900–SM-R925 |
Galaxy Watch5 / Watch5 Pro | Standard and Pro families with size and LTE variations |
SM-R930–SM-R945 |
Galaxy Watch6 | Standard Watch6 family |
SM-R950–SM-R965 |
Galaxy Watch6 Classic | Classic family with physical rotating bezel |
SM-R861, SM-R866 |
Galaxy Watch FE | 40mm Bluetooth/LTE variants |
SM-L300–SM-L315 |
Galaxy Watch7 | 40mm and 44mm Bluetooth/LTE variants |
SM-L320–SM-L335 |
Galaxy Watch8 | 40mm and 44mm Bluetooth/LTE variants |
SM-L500, SM-L505 |
Galaxy Watch8 Classic | Bluetooth/LTE variants |
SM-L705 |
Galaxy Watch Ultra | Ultra LTE family |
Samsung’s Watch4 datasheet and U.S. June 2026 wearables document confirm representative mappings. The SM-R prefix is common on older Galaxy Watch and Gear-derived models, while newer families use SM-L; neither prefix alone proves the exact model. Suffixes can reflect market, carrier, connectivity, color, or sales-channel details and do not have one universal interpretation.

How to tell Bluetooth from LTE
Look for an IMEI, EID, ICCID, phone-number entry, or mobile-network settings. These indicate cellular capability, but an LTE-capable model does not necessarily have an active plan. LTE service requires carrier activation and regional compatibility. Bluetooth models require a compatible phone for setup and do not have an IMEI, according to Samsung.
Visual clues: useful for confirmation, not proof
- Physical rotating bezel: A strong clue for the 2018 Galaxy Watch, Watch3, Watch4 Classic, Watch6 Classic, and Watch8 Classic. It is not conclusive because cases and bezel rings can be replaced, and some watches use a digital or touch-sensitive bezel.
- Case shape and buttons: The Ultra has a distinctive rugged case and orange-accented action button. Active models have a smoother minimalist design, while Classic models look more traditional.
- Fitness-band shape: Galaxy Fit devices use a narrow band form factor rather than a full round smartwatch.
- Size: Measure the case, not the strap. Similar 40mm or 44mm categories occur across several generations.
- Charger: It can narrow the possibilities, but chargers are shared, replaced, and not definitive.
Do not identify a watch solely from a round case, two buttons, a watch face, case color, charger shape, or the word “Galaxy” on the back.
Use the operating system only as a broad clue
Galaxy Watch4 and newer Galaxy Watch models use Wear OS powered by Samsung. Older Galaxy Watch, Active, Active2, Watch3, and many Gear devices use Samsung’s older Tizen-based platform. Samsung’s Wear OS setup guide explains the newer platform and pairing process.

Software is not a final identification method: updates change menus, watch faces can look alike, and regional firmware may use different labels.

Why identification affects phone compatibility
Compatibility varies by model, region, operator, phone brand, and software version. Samsung’s current Galaxy Watch compatibility guide lists these Android baselines:
- Galaxy Watch Ultra and Watch7: Android 11 or later.
- Galaxy Watch FE, Watch6, and Watch6 Classic: Android 10 or later; Watch6 models require at least 2GB of RAM.
- Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro: Android 8 or later with at least 1.5GB of RAM.
- Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic: Android 6 or later with at least 1.5GB of RAM.
Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch Ultra, and Watch FE are not compatible with iPhone. Older models—including the 2018 Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Active2, and some Gear watches—may work with supported iPhones and iOS versions. Galaxy Fit3 is not compatible with iOS.
A compatible non-Samsung Android phone may connect, but some manufacturer-specific features can be limited. Samsung Pay, Samsung Health Monitor, ECG, blood-pressure tools, and other health functions may also have country, phone, regulatory, account, or software restrictions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Bluetooth models require a compatible phone. Watch4 and Watch5 series devices must initially be set up with a compatible Android phone through Galaxy Wearable.

Troubleshooting identification problems
The model number is unreadable
Combine the case design, button layout, bezel type, approximate size, charger, apps, phone compatibility, IMEI status, and packaging. Treat the result as probable until a model number or Samsung Support match confirms it.
Galaxy Wearable cannot detect the watch
The watch may be off, out of power, reset, incompatible with the phone, using the wrong plug-in, linked to another account, or too old for reliable support on the current phone. An iPhone will not pair with a newer Wear OS Galaxy Watch. Use the underside label or Samsung account records rather than repeatedly attempting to pair an unidentified device.
The number contains extra letters or does not appear in search
Search both the complete SKU and the shorter base model—for example, search SM-L335 as well as the longer retail code. Regional and carrier suffixes can produce different full strings. If Samsung returns no valid result, recheck characters such as 0 and O, then contact Samsung or the seller.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The watch is refurbished or repaired
A refurbished unit may have a replacement back, motherboard, charger, or box. Software-reported identification is usually the best starting point, although board replacement can create exceptions.

You suspect a counterfeit
Warning signs include Samsung branding without a valid model number, a number that maps to a different design, a non-Samsung setup prompt, poor markings, or unusual charging behavior. One mismatch is not conclusive. Ask Samsung Support or the seller to verify the device.
After identification: choose the right next step
Once the model is confirmed, use Samsung’s watch accessories page to find a compatible charger or band. Confirm case size and generation before ordering; generic Qi chargers should not be assumed to work with every Galaxy Watch.
If you are considering replacement, Samsung’s U.S. lineup page currently includes the Galaxy Watch8 Classic, Watch8, Watch7, and Watch Ultra. Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP document listed Watch7 models from $249.99, Watch8 models from $349.99, Watch8 Classic from $499.99, and Watch Ultra at $649.99; these are dated U.S. MSRP signals, not guaranteed sale prices worldwide. Check Samsung’s trade-in page for changing eligibility and values. LTE is worth considering only if phone-free connectivity justifies a recurring carrier plan.
