Their collaboration grew around a shared aim: create technically inventive watches with meticulous hand finishing that could still be worn regularly.
How Stephen Forsey became a watchmaker
In a 2019 interview with Monochrome Watches, Forsey traced his interest in timekeeping to childhood. At around ten or twelve, he was fascinated by pendulums and imagined restoring historic clocks for a living.
He studied in London and worked as a watch restorer at Asprey. He then took two courses at the Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program (WOSTEP) in Neuchâtel, in 1988 and 1990, before joining Renaud & Papi in Le Locle. Restoration gave him close contact with the craft of repairing and understanding mechanisms; at Renaud & Papi, he met Greubel, whose interests centered more on movement construction and creating products.
How Forsey and Greubel came together
Forsey said the two worked closely at Renaud & Papi until 1999. Their conversations about what watchmakers might do in the new century led to a shared conviction that traditional watchmaking still had room for new ideas. They wanted innovation to coexist with hand finishing and practical reliability—not to be a technical exercise detached from everyday use.

They used CompliTime as a development vehicle for projects and ideas for other watch companies. In Forsey’s account, that work helped them build a small team and create time to develop their first calibre, the Double Tourbillon 30° Vision. He described CompliTime as independent and separate from Greubel Forsey, rather than simply an early name for the watch brand.
What Greubel Forsey’s approach emphasizes
Forsey described the company’s work as a combination of movement invention, three-dimensional mechanical architecture, finishing, and performance. Developing a calibre could answer a technical question, add knowledge, or expose new questions; an experiment was valuable even if it did not become a commercial watch or meet its original aim.

In a 2018 Quill & Pad interview, Forsey explained the division of work in development: Greubel oversaw the creative side, while Forsey worked with the technical team to assess feasibility. He said, “We are not marketing driven, so we also don’t start off with a marketing brief when developing a new watch.” That describes the founders’ stated process, not an independent measure of the watches’ quality or performance.
The same experimental outlook also means accepting limits. Forsey recalled an effort to make a balance and spring from synthesized diamond; the technology available at the time was not adequate for their watchmaking requirements. In his words, Mechanical Nano was “a process, not just a platform or a marketing tool to announce in advance what is coming up.”

How the collection philosophies differ
Greubel Forsey’s current official Art of Invention page presents its collections as distinct mechanical directions. These are the brand’s own descriptions, rather than independent performance comparisons.

What the interview’s figures do—and do not—establish
Several numbers in the interviews describe the company’s position at the time and should not be mistaken for current specifications or business facts.
- 22 calibres: Forsey said in 2019 that Greubel Forsey had developed 22 different calibres as it approached its 15th anniversary.
- 20% stake: In 2019, Forsey said a Richemont investment finalized in 2006 involved a 20% stake and that the structure had remained the same up to the interview. This is a historical account, not confirmation of current ownership.
- 180 days: Forsey described this in 2019 as a Mechanical Nano research goal: using energy from a conventional movement to run for that period. It was a target, not a claim that a finished product achieved it.
- 11 years and 935 components: In 2018, Forsey said the Grande Sonnerie took 11 years to develop and contained 935 components. He also said five pieces were delivered in 2017 and described production as highly limited. These are interview claims tied to that period, not current production figures.
Where the watches are available today
The brand’s current site describes its atelier in La Chaux-de-Fonds and says its timepieces are available through a selected worldwide network of specialist retailers. It directs questions about watches and retail partners to its concierge. That current guidance is a better reference for access than Forsey’s 2019 description of the company’s sales arrangements.
