Vianney Halter’s path to independent watchmaking ran through restoration and subcontract work before the Antiqua gave him a watch of his own to show. He says a slowdown in commissions after the 1996 Asian financial crisis created the time to develop that personal project. Its presentation at the 1998 Basel fair marked a turning point in his public career.
Who is Vianney Halter?
Born in 1963, Halter graduated from Paris Watchmaking School in 1980 and began his career restoring clocks and watches, according to his official 2023 press kit. His early experience was rooted in traditional horological work rather than a ready-made plan to launch a namesake watch brand.
In a 2021 interview with MONOCHROME, Halter recounted moving to Sainte-Croix in 1989 after François-Paul Journe invited him to work there. He later founded Janvier SA in 1994, an independent horological development company. He also worked on commissions and subcontract projects for established watch businesses.
Why did Halter make the Antiqua?
Halter’s account connects the Antiqua’s creation to a practical shift in his work. After the 1996 Asian financial crisis, commissioned work slowed. In the 2021 interview, he said this left him time to make a personal watch that could demonstrate his own ideas and his ability to design and craft a complete timepiece.

The official press kit dates the Antiqua’s presentation to the 1998 Basel fair and says it helped Halter assert his creativity and gain access to the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI). The distinction matters: the financial downturn is Halter’s retrospective explanation for the project, while the presentation date and its stated career significance come from the press kit.
What makes the Antiqua distinctive?
The Antiqua is a perpetual calendar, but its significance in Halter’s story is broader than its complication. The MONOCHROME interview describes it as a showcase for his ability to make the movement, case and hands, bringing his design and craft together in a single personal creation.
In a 2024 Wristcheck interview, Halter recalled that many people found the watch too unconventional when it debuted in 1998. He said that, in hindsight, it had become iconic. That is his reflection on its reception, not a claim of universal agreement among collectors or the industry.
How did Halter work in the workshop?
Asked by MONOCHROME how he worked, Halter answered: “I do almost everything in-house, in the traditional way.” He said prototypes were made entirely in the workshop and that he handled case finishing there. Some machining and engine turning could be outsourced, so “in-house” did not mean that every operation or component was necessarily produced on site.

In that 2021 interview, Halter described a team of five or six people and estimated output at about ten watches a year. Those are interview-era figures, not established current staffing or production numbers.
Halter’s stated priority was to spend time at the workbench, follow his desire to create new things and promote his work. That emphasis helps explain the appeal of his practice: independent watchmaking here is not simply a matter of putting a personal name on a dial, but of keeping design decisions and substantial hands-on work close to the watchmaker.

What is known about Halter’s current production?
The workshop size and annual output above are figures Halter gave in 2021. They should not be used as a description of his present-day operation. The official 2025 BEHRENS collaboration press kit establishes that a collaboration was announced, but an announcement alone does not establish current production rates or available stock. Current output, prices and purchase availability are not established by the cited material.
