Casio’s Yamagata factory is the Japanese “mother factory” behind selected G-SHOCKs, including the flagship MR-G line—not every G-SHOCK. Its appeal is the combination of automation and skilled handwork: specialized robots and inspection systems support production, while certified workers assemble, adjust, and finish watches. Casio has documented a hosted visit to the factory, but that report does not establish that ordinary visitors can tour it.

Where are G-SHOCK watches made?

Yamagata Casio is in Higashine City, Yamagata Prefecture. Casio describes it as its Japanese mother factory for watchmaking and says it serves as the Casio Group’s only manufacturing base in Japan. The company says the site also presides over overseas production bases, launches products, and pursues quality, cost, and delivery goals. Yamagata Casio was established in October 1979 and began operating in April 1980; it is wholly owned by Casio Computer. Yamagata Casio company profile.

That role makes the factory more than a place where watches are assembled. Casio’s description of its MR-G production highlights component making, modular production lines, proprietary robots for movement assembly, anomaly detection, precision molding, and metal finishing. Casio President Shinichi Kimura describes the balance in the company profile: “What does not change is our passion for manufacturing, and what must change is the evolution of technology.”

How are selected G-SHOCKs made at Yamagata?

Automation supports precision work

Casio says its production combines automated processes with workers’ skills. Proprietary robots assemble movements, and automation and inspection systems help identify anomalies and check components. In a report about a hosted factory visit, Casio also described image recognition and sensing technologies supporting skilled workers in tasks such as installing hands and conducting precision tests. Those systems assist production; the account does not suggest that every operation is fully automated. Casio’s MR-G feature and Casio’s report on Ryo Ishikawa’s visit.

Certified workers assemble and finish watches

Casio says certified “Medalists” work near the Premium Production Line, handling assembly, adjustment, and finishing. Its factory feature reported about 40 Medalists at the time it was published and said reaching the highest “Meister” level takes at least seven years. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited workforce statistics. The point is not that handwork replaces machinery: the factory’s production story is that trained people and specialized equipment work together.

Demonstrations show the ideas behind G-SHOCK testing

Casio’s factory feature describes showroom demonstrations using a metal pendulum hammer for shock, pressurized air for a water-resistance demonstration said to be equivalent to 200 meters underwater, and a spring-based acceleration demonstration. These are demonstrations at the facility, not independent test results for a particular watch or proof of a model’s rating.

Are all G-SHOCK watches made in Japan?

No. “Made in Japan” applies to selected models and series, not the entire G-SHOCK range. Casio’s regional campaign page, published on 6 December 2022, names MR-G B5000, Full-Metal, GW-5000, and DW-5000SS among its Yamagata-produced models or series. The page describes production at the original Yamagata factory and its Premium Production Line, but it is campaign-era material—not confirmation that every model is currently made there or available in every market. Casio’s Made in Japan page.

For a specific watch, check Casio’s current product information for the exact model and your region rather than inferring its origin from the G-SHOCK name, collection, or appearance. A factory location alone also does not establish that one watch is better than another; compare the actual model, construction, materials, finishing, and current regional availability.

What did the documented factory visit involve?

Casio reported on 22 January 2026 that professional golfer Ryo Ishikawa visited Yamagata Casio in late December 2025. During the hosted visit, he toured the Premium Production Line and saw work on high-priced brand watches. Casio says he was told that the G-SHOCK he wore that day had been produced at Yamagata Casio. That is a detail from the company’s account of his visit, not evidence about the origin of G-SHOCKs generally.

The report offers a look at how Casio presents the factory to a guest, but it does not say that the site accepts ordinary visitors or explain how to arrange a tour. Do not assume public access based on this hosted visit; check directly with Casio or Yamagata Casio for current visitor arrangements before planning a trip.

What “Made in Japan” means for a G-SHOCK

For G-SHOCK, the label is a model-specific origin claim tied to selected production at Yamagata, not a promise that every watch in the range comes from the same factory. The most clearly supported focal line is MR-G: Casio identifies it as the flagship G-SHOCK line made at its specialized Yamagata facility. If you are considering a Japanese-made G-SHOCK, verify the exact reference and its current regional status rather than relying on a collection name or an older campaign listing.

Casio’s factory account makes the “cool and fun” appeal tangible: precision equipment, unusual testing demonstrations, and the expertise of workers who assemble and finish watches. Its significance is in how selected watches are made—not in implying that all G-SHOCKs share the same origin or that factory location alone determines quality.
