The Breitling Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute, reference PB02301A1B1P1, marked the 60th anniversary of Scott Carpenter’s 1962 spaceflight. Its defining feature is a 24-hour dial: unlike a conventional 12-hour watch, it completes one rotation per day, making it possible to distinguish day from night in orbit. Breitling limited the 2022 edition to 362 pieces.
Why the Cosmonaute has a 24-hour dial
On May 24, 1962, NASA astronaut Scott Carpenter flew the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. He requested a watch with a 24-hour display because an astronaut in orbit experiences repeated sunrises and sunsets rather than Earth’s usual day-night rhythm. Breitling says, “In orbit, where the sun rises and sets every 90 minutes, that display would keep him grounded in time.” That is the manufacturer’s product wording, not a quotation attributed to Carpenter.
Breitling describes Carpenter’s 1962 watch as “the first Swiss wristwatch in space.” The original was damaged by saltwater after splashdown and is distinct from the later watches commemorating it. Breitling’s 2025 account says the damaged dial remained in the Carpenter family archives until 2022.
What the 2022 limited edition includes
The 60th-anniversary model pairs the Cosmonaute’s 24-hour display with the familiar Navitimer slide-rule bezel. It is a modern interpretation rather than a replica of Carpenter’s original: Fratello notes that its date window at 6 o’clock was not present on the original watch.

The 24-hour scale changes how the wearer reads the dial: the hour hand takes a full day to make one circuit. The chronograph adds elapsed-time measurement, while the bidirectional slide rule preserves a signature Navitimer feature. The combination makes the watch a commemorative instrument with a clear link to the original flight, rather than simply a standard 12-hour Navitimer with a space-themed name.

How it differs from later Cosmonaute editions
The 2022 anniversary watch is easy to confuse with later commemorative Cosmonaute releases. Their editions, materials and prices are not directly interchangeable comparisons: the table separates the 2022 launch figures from the later models’ reported details.
| Edition | Occasion and distinguishing details | Production | Price information |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 60th anniversary | Reference PB02301A1B1P1; 41 mm steel case, platinum bezel, black dial | 362 pieces | 2022 launch: €10,200 on black alligator strap; €10,550 on steel bracelet, as reported by Fratello |
| 2025 Scott Carpenter Centenary | Reference LB0240211C1P1; platinum case, blue dial | 50 pieces | Breitling’s UK product page listed GBP 38,700 including VAT when accessed; this is a UK regional price for the 2025 reference |
| 2026 Artemis II | Galaxy-blue meteorite dial; AOPA describes a 44 mm case, red accents and blue alligator strap | 450 pieces | Not stated in the cited official video description or AOPA account |
The 2025 Centenary’s UK price is not a current price for the 2022 model, and regional prices or stock can change. The 2026 Artemis II release is another distinct edition, not a revised name for the 60th-anniversary reference.
