Was Rolex Still the King of Watches in 2024?

Rolex led Swiss watch brands by estimated retail value and market share in 2024, but sales leadership is not a verdict on every measure of watchmaking.

Yes—if “king” means the Swiss watch brand with the highest estimated retail value and market share in calendar year 2024. Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimates put Rolex first, with CHF 10.583 billion in turnover and an estimated 32.1% market share. That establishes a commanding sales lead, not universal superiority in craftsmanship, accuracy, availability, service or investment performance.

What does “king of watches” mean here?

There is no single official title for the world’s best watch brand. For this comparison, “king” means the leading Swiss watch brand by estimated retail value and ranking in 2024. The available figures are third-party estimates attributed to Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult, published in February 2025—not audited sales disclosures from Rolex.

That distinction matters: market leadership measures commercial scale. It cannot, on its own, show which brand makes the most technically accomplished watch, offers the best ownership experience, or suits an individual buyer.

How far ahead was Rolex?

In the Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimates reproduced by The Hour Markers in February 2025, Rolex recorded CHF 10.583 billion in estimated 2024 turnover and 1,176,000 units. LuxeConsult founder Oliver Müller’s summary of the report put Rolex’s estimated market share at 32.1%, up 190 basis points from the prior year.

Cartier ranked second at about 8% share, followed by Omega in third place. Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe followed in the ranking. Rolex’s estimated share was therefore roughly four times Cartier’s, a substantial lead by this measure.

The figures should not be mistaken for exact company-reported accounts. Rolex is privately held, and the cited estimates do not amount to an official, audited Rolex sales report. Read them as a strong indication of market rank and scale.

What the 2024 market says about Rolex’s position

The wider Swiss watch market contracted in 2024: export value was CHF 25.9 billion, down 2.8%, according to Oliver Müller’s 2025 summary of the industry figures. Against that backdrop, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille—the four leading privately owned brands in the cited analysis—held an estimated 47% combined share, up 300 basis points year over year.

Value was especially concentrated at the top end of the market. Watches retailing above CHF 50,000 represented 33.5% of Swiss watch export value and 84% of export-value growth in 2024, while accounting for 1.2% of units. These are market-wide figures, not Rolex-specific ones; they help explain why a small number of high-value brands can carry outsized weight in sales totals.

Does Rolex’s sales lead mean it makes the best watches?

No—not on the evidence behind this ranking. The estimates compare commercial measures such as turnover, units and market share. They do not rank brands by movement performance, finishing, design, durability, customer service, retail access or buyer satisfaction. Nor do they establish that Rolex watches are a better choice for every wearer.

Cartier and Omega are meaningful rivals in the overall brand ranking, but the comparison is not a verdict on one watch against another. A buyer choosing between particular models would need model-level evidence and personal priorities, rather than brand market share alone.

What changed in Rolex’s distribution in 2024?

Oliver Müller’s account describes Rolex’s completion of its acquisition of Bucherer, its largest distribution partner, as a turning point in the brand’s distribution strategy. Müller also notes that Rolex had previously had very little retail presence of its own beyond a Geneva boutique.

The acquisition is relevant to how Rolex distributes watches, but the cited account does not establish that it improved consumer access, shortened waits or changed how authorized-dealer availability works. It should not be treated as proof that shortages ended.

How should the 2024 result be compared with 2023?

Bloomberg reported that Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimated Rolex sales at CHF 10.1 billion and production at 1.24 million watches in 2023, up 11% from 2022. The newer 2024 estimate lists 1,176,000 units, so the reported figures do not support a claim that Rolex’s unit volume increased every year. The estimates are from different annual reports and should be treated as context, not as a direct measure of audited year-to-year company results.

Verdict: undisputed by sales, not by every definition

For calendar year 2024, Rolex was the clear leader among Swiss watch brands by estimated retail value and market share. Its lead over Cartier and the broader market context make “king” a defensible shorthand for commercial dominance. “Undisputed” goes too far if it is meant to settle questions of quality, personal preference, access or investment value.
