Its name refers to the company’s account of astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra wearing his personal CK 2998 during the Sigma 7 Mercury mission in 1962—not to a watch newly qualified for spaceflight. The new model pairs vintage-inspired details with a 39.70 mm steel case, a sapphire crystal, and hand-wound Master Chronometer calibre 3861.
Why is it called First OMEGA in Space?
OMEGA dates the original Speedmaster CK 2998 to 1959 and identifies it as the model’s second generation. According to OMEGA, Schirra bought a CK 2998 for himself and wore it on Sigma 7, which launched on 3 October 1962. The company associates that flight with the “First OMEGA in Space” nickname. This is OMEGA’s historical account of the watch’s connection to the mission; the 2024 model is a contemporary tribute, not the original flight-worn watch.

What does the 2024 FOiS look like?
The watch uses a symmetrical 39.70 mm stainless-steel case inspired by the CK 2998’s proportions. Its black aluminium tachymeter bezel has the vintage “Dot Over Ninety” detail: the marker sits above, rather than beside, the 90 on the scale. A grey-blue dial with CVD coating provides the central color contrast.

Other period cues include vintage OMEGA logos, Alpha-style hands, and a Seahorse medallion on the caseback. The domed sapphire crystal is shaped to evoke the profile of Hesalite, while retaining sapphire construction. The result is a deliberately retro appearance built with modern materials; it should not be confused with the original CK 2998’s exact construction.
What is inside the watch?
The FOiS is powered by OMEGA’s hand-wound calibre 3861. OMEGA lists the movement as METAS Master Chronometer certified, resistant to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, and equipped with a 50-hour power reserve and a 3 Hz frequency. These are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent performance-test results.

OMEGA offers the watch on a steel bracelet or on black or brown leather. The steel bracelet has flat links and a patented comfort-release adjustment system, as described by OMEGA. The available information does not establish a measured comfort or performance advantage for one configuration over another.
