IWC’s Portugieser Automatic 42 Year of the Horse (reference IW501709) pairs a burgundy dial with restrained Lunar New Year details: gold-colored hands and applied markers, plus a galloping-horse rotor visible through the caseback. IWC announced the stainless-steel watch as a 500-piece limited edition; that is its announced production run, not an indication of current stock.
What makes the IW501709 a Year of the Horse edition?
The watch’s special-edition identity is carried by details rather than a large horse graphic on the dial. Its burgundy face is arranged in the familiar Portugieser layout, with Roman numerals and gold-colored applied details. Small seconds sit at 9 o’clock, the power-reserve display at 3, and the date at 6. The caseback reveals an automatic rotor shaped as a galloping horse. IWC describes the horse as a symbol of strength, energy, and freedom; that is the brand’s framing, not a universal cultural interpretation.
IWC says the Year of the Horse begins on 17 February 2026. The brand announced the IW501709 in 2025 as a 500-piece edition. Neither the production figure nor the launch announcement establishes how many remain available.

Strap options and everyday considerations
IWC supplies both a black and a burgundy alligator strap, each designed to fit the included stainless-steel folding clasp. The two options let the wearer choose a more subdued look or echo the dial color without needing to source a separate strap. The listed width is 22 mm.
At 42.4 mm across and 13 mm high, this is a substantial watch by its stated dimensions. Its 5-bar water resistance is a published specification; it should not be treated as a promise of suitability for every water activity. For practical use, follow IWC’s current care and water-resistance guidance.

Price and availability: check the relevant market
Prices differ by territory and source, and they can change. Monochrome’s 21 October 2025 launch coverage reported EUR 15,300 including tax. IWC’s UK product page listed £12,700 including VAT when accessed in 2026. These are separate regional references, not directly interchangeable prices; check IWC’s live listing or an authorized retailer for the market where you plan to buy.
IWC announced a 500-piece run, but that does not show whether the watch is currently available, sold out, or offered at a particular retailer. The UK price and specifications are on IWC’s product page; the launch euro price was reported by Monochrome.
