Read it from left to right: a satellite index shows the hour, the dragon’s head marks the tens of minutes, and a separate disc indicates the precise minute. The dragon is part of the indication system, not merely decoration.
How to read the GENUS Dragon
GENUS’s 2024 technical press kit says to read the display from left to right. The three indications work together:
- Hour: At left, a fixed arrow aligns with one of 12 rotating satellite hour indices.
- Tens of minutes: In the center, the dragon’s head indicates the tens-of-minutes position.
- Precise minute: At right, near the crown, a fixed arrow points to the precise minute on a skeletonized rotating disc.
For example, if the hour indicator shows 8, the dragon indicates the 40-minute range, and the right-hand disc shows 7, the time is 8:47. GENUS says the numerals and indicators are coated with Super-LumiNova®. The dragon indicates the tens of minutes; the separate disc supplies the individual minute.
A dragon made from the indication system
GENUS describes 11 free-moving, hand-engraved 18K-gold elements styled as a dragon, moving between two counter-rotating focal points along a figure-eight path. The hour satellites also rotate, with peripheral and axial movement. These moving elements are how the watch displays time, rather than ornaments added to a conventional dial.

The dragon’s shape makes the display visually distinctive, but the practical point is straightforward: its head marks the tens of minutes while the other indications provide the hour and precise minute. “Mesmerizing ballet” is an apt visual description, not a claim about timekeeping performance.
The movement behind the display
GENUS’s 2024 technical press kit identifies the hand-wound Calibre 160W-1.2, made in the brand’s Geneva workshops. Its modular construction has one section for energy storage and transmission and another for distribution and regulation.
| Specification | GENUS Dragon |
|---|---|
| Calibre | 160W-1.2 |
| Winding | Manual |
| Components | 390 |
| Rubies | 26 |
| Frequency | 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) |
| Power reserve | Approximately 50 hours |
These specifications are from GENUS’s 2024 press kit. The movement’s distribution system supports the watch’s satellite hours, moving dragon, and separate minute counter.
Case, crystal, and water resistance
The GENUS Dragon measures 43 mm in diameter and 18.8 mm thick, according to GENUS’s 2024 press kit. It has a domed glass-box sapphire crystal and an open sapphire caseback, both with anti-reflective coating.

Water resistance is rated at 3 ATM, approximately 30 meters. This is a modest rating; it should not be taken as evidence that the watch is suitable for swimming or diving.
Materials, straps, and published prices

Recognition and model context
The GENUS Dragon belongs to the GNS1.2 family. The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève entry for the GNS1.2 TD says that the underlying movement received the Prix de l’Exception Mécanique at GPHG 2019. Keep that recognition attached to the movement/model context; it does not mean every later Dragon case variant won separately.

- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
The same GPHG entry identifies July 2020 as the launch of the specific GNS1.2 TD model. That date should not be treated as the launch date for every Dragon variant.
Who is the GENUS Dragon for?
The Dragon is aimed at collectors drawn to unconventional time displays, moving mechanical sculpture, and independent watchmaking. Its unusual indications require more interpretation than a conventional hour-and-minute display, and its dimensions and high published suggested prices make it a specialized purchase rather than a mainstream recommendation.
Before pursuing a particular version, ask GENUS about the exact case material, strap and clasp options, any bespoke or gem-set work, current pricing, and availability. The research reviewed here does not establish current stock, transaction prices, resale trends, service intervals, or comparative value.
