Check compatibility for your exact watch model before you begin. Apple’s US setup guidance says Apple Watch Ultra 3, Series 11, and SE 3 require an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later; older models may have different requirements.
Before you begin: check compatibility and prepare both devices
- Check the model requirements. For Apple Watch Ultra 3, Series 11, and SE 3, Apple specifies an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Requirements differ for older models.
- Update the iPhone. Install the latest iOS version available for your iPhone.
- Turn on Bluetooth and connect to a network. Use Wi-Fi or a cellular network during setup.
- Keep the devices close. Leave the watch near the iPhone while pairing and syncing.
- Wear the watch comfortably. Apple recommends a close but comfortable fit.
How to pair an Apple Watch with an iPhone for the first time
- Turn on the Apple Watch. Put it on your wrist and press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. If it does not turn on, it may need charging.
- Bring it near the iPhone. Unlock the iPhone and wait for the pairing prompt, then tap Continue.
- Open the Apple Watch app if needed. If no prompt appears, open the app and choose Start Pairing or All Watches > Add Watch, depending on the screen and software version.
- Choose your setup method. Select Set Up for Myself for your own watch.
- Pair the watch. Center the animation on the watch in the iPhone camera viewfinder. If camera pairing is unavailable or unsuccessful, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually and follow the prompts.
- Complete setup and syncing. Follow the prompts to sign in to an Apple Account, create a passcode, and choose settings. Keep the devices close until syncing finishes; the watch face appears when setup is complete.
Choose how to configure the watch
The available options depend on the watch and setup. You may be able to configure it as new, restore from a prior watch backup, or review express setup and customize settings.
| Option | What it does | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Set up as new | Configures the watch without restoring a prior watch backup. | Choose this for a first watch or when you want to configure it from the beginning. |
| Restore from backup | Uses available data from a prior Apple Watch backup. | Choose this when replacing a watch and you want to restore available settings and data. |
| Express setup and customize | Lets you review setup choices and customize settings when offered. | Choose based on the options shown during setup. |
Camera pairing or manual pairing
| Method | How it works | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Camera pairing | Center the animation shown on the watch in the iPhone camera viewfinder. | The animation appears and the camera can read it. |
| Manual pairing | Choose Pair Apple Watch Manually in the Apple Watch app and follow the prompts. | The camera pairing method is unavailable or unsuccessful. |
Cellular setup
Activating cellular service during setup is optional for a cellular Apple Watch. Apple says you can also activate it later in the Apple Watch app. Standard setup generally requires the iPhone and watch to use the same carrier; Apple notes an exception for Family Sharing setup. Cellular service is not available in every country or region.
