Introducing the M.A.D.Editions M.A.D.1 RED: MB&F’s More Accessible Watch

The M.A.D.1 RED pairs a lateral cylinder time display and conspicuous winding rotor with cherry-red styling. Here’s how it differs from the original blue model and what MB&F says about raffle allocation.

The M.A.D.1 RED is a mechanical watch from M.A.D.Editions, a separate label MB&F created to explore its design-driven mechanical world at a more accessible price point. Instead of hands on a conventional dial, it displays the time on two rotating cylinders at the edge of the watch. The RED edition stands out for its cherry-red finish, slimmer rotor bezel and round winding crown; MB&F’s page does not confirm its current price or availability.

What is the M.A.D.1 RED?

The M.A.D.1 RED is part of M.A.D.Editions, which MB&F describes as a project connected to its mechanical-art universe but distinct from the MB&F Machines. The distinction matters: MB&F says the watch was developed under the M.A.D.Editions brand, rather than being an MB&F Machine. The label was conceived as a way to pursue the brand’s unconventional design ideas at a lower price point than its complex, highly finished Machines, though the official RED page does not give a current price. MB&F’s M.A.D.1 RED page describes the watch and the project’s intent.

MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser has described the motivation as wanting to make something his family and friends could afford, while also tackling the creative challenge of designing at a lower price point. That explains why the RED is often framed as “the accessible MB&F”: accessible is relative to the brand’s more elaborate Machines, not a claim that the watch is inexpensive or that a particular price is currently available.

How does the M.A.D.1 display the time?

Rather than placing a conventional dial and hands under the crystal, the M.A.D.1 uses two rotating cylinders positioned laterally around the case to show hours and minutes. The display is read from the side of the watch, giving the time indication a peripheral, mechanical character rather than the familiar face-on layout.

MB&F says the watch is powered by an upside-down modified Miyota movement. That movement drives a prominent triple-blade winding rotor made from titanium and tungsten; the rotor is treated with Super-LumiNova. The unusual display and visible rotor are central to the M.A.D.1’s identity, and the RED edition retains this underlying platform.

What changed from the original blue M.A.D.1?

The RED keeps the original platform and case structure, but MB&F identifies three edition-specific changes: the color, the rotor bezel and the crown. The brand unveiled the RED in March 2022, according to its M.A.D.1 GREEN page, which provides series context.

Feature Original blue M.A.D.1 M.A.D.1 RED
Color Blue treatment Cherry red, replacing the original blue, as described by MB&F on its official RED page.
Rotor bezel Original profile Slightly slimmer bezel around the rotor; MB&F does not publish comparative dimensions on the RED page.
Winding and setting crown Original crown design A rounder, more conventional crown for winding and time-setting, according to MB&F’s RED page.
Platform and time display Shared M.A.D.1 platform and lateral hour-and-minute cylinders Retains the platform and lateral-cylinder display, according to MB&F’s RED page.

The crown revision is a practical as well as visual distinction: MB&F says winding and time-setting are now handled by a classic, round winding crown. The official description does not provide comparative performance data or exact measurements for the RED’s slimmer bezel.

Is the M.A.D.1 RED available now?

MB&F describes raffles as its allocation approach for M.A.D.Editions. The brand says it chose raffles because drops, long retail queues and indefinite waiting lists could be frustrating, and its RED page invites readers to register for notification when the next raffle opens. That invitation is not confirmation that a RED raffle is currently open, that RED stock remains, or that the watch is available through retailers.

For current allocation news, check MB&F’s official M.A.D.Editions channels. The official page warns about scammers and directs readers to use only the official M.A.D.Editions Instagram page. Avoid treating an unofficial listing or social account as evidence of availability or authorized resale.
