The MING LW.01 is a mechanically powered watch built around an unusually light magnesium structure. MING offered it in manual and automatic versions, claiming watch-head weights of 8.8 g and 10.8 g, respectively—not including a strap or buckle. The brand described them as what it believed to be the world’s lightest mechanical wristwatches; that remains MING’s attributed claim, not an independently verified current record. The watches are now sold out, deliveries are complete, and MING says it will not make them again.
How much does the MING LW.01 weigh?
MING’s undated product archive, checked in 2026, gives the following weights. “Watch head” excludes the strap and buckle; the ready-to-wear figures add the supplied single-layer Alcantara strap and matching AZ31 buckle.

How did MING make the LW.01 so light?
A magnesium case and integrated structure
The case and the integrated ring MING calls the “dial” and movement holder use PEO-treated AZ31 magnesium alloy. Rather than a conventional dial plate carrying the movement, the ring also serves as its holder. At the rear, a cage and three-dimensional struts support the assembly. MING says it pared material from the narrow bezel by hollowing it out, while retaining the feel of a metal case.

The brand says it selected AZ31 for its low density, consistency and tactile qualities, and that Keronite treated the alloy for corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. These are manufacturer descriptions, not results of independent materials testing.
Lightened components throughout
- Crystal: Gorilla Glass 6 rather than sapphire, chosen by MING to reduce weight; the brand says it received additional hardening and anti-reflective treatment.
- Crown: anodised aluminium.
- Screws: PEEK composite.
- Strap and buckle: a single-layer “Record” Alcantara strap and a matching AZ31 buckle are specified as 1.2 g and 0.6 g, respectively.
MING credits Smiths High Performance for the raw AZ31 billet, Keronite for alloy treatment, Knight Optical for the glass, Manufacture Jean-Rousseau for the straps, DBMF for an additional aluminium buckle, Helfenstein Mechanik for magnesium machining expertise, and Schwarz-Etienne for work on the ETA 2000 components and final assembly and testing. The brand describes the project as several years in the making, involving extensive metallurgy and testing.

What do the two LW.01 versions have in common?
The two models share the same core design and listed case specifications. MING’s archive gives a 38 mm diameter, 6.5 mm thickness, 25 m water resistance, fixed bars, a 20 mm lug width and Gorilla Glass 6. The watch’s visual center is partly obscured by a gradient print on the crystal; MING identifies the running indicator as a pulse-seconds disc.
The automatic version uses an ETA 2000.M1 movement. MING lists an approximately 36-hour power reserve for the automatic calibre. The archive does not give a corresponding power-reserve figure for the manual version.

Manual or automatic: what is the difference?
The practical choice is winding preference versus the lowest stated head weight. The manual LW.01 is 2 g lighter by MING’s figures. The automatic avoids the need for regular hand-winding while worn, but the available specifications do not establish other performance differences between the variants.

Is the MING LW.01 still available?
No new production is planned. MING’s archive lists the watches as sold out, says all deliveries are complete, and states that the LW.01 will not be produced again. The brand’s launch description called them “what we believe are the world’s lightest mechanical wristwatches”; that is MING’s own qualified claim, not a verified current record. MING’s product archive is the source for the current production status.
At launch, Fratello reported a 200-watch total edition and a price of CHF 19,500, with deliveries then expected in Q4 2024. Those are historical launch details, not a current price or delivery forecast. Resale availability and current secondhand prices are not established here. Fratello’s October 26, 2023 launch report provides that dated context.
What to know about the fit
The archive lists a 20 mm lug width but also specifies fixed bars. Width alone therefore does not establish compatibility with a generic 20 mm strap; the supplied bespoke strap is the documented option. The listed 25 m water resistance is a modest specification, so the watch should not be treated as a swimming or diving watch.
