The ŌTSUKA LŌTEC No.8 is an automatic mechanical watch built around a three-part display: an hour channel that jumps at the hour, a minute indicator that travels across a scale and sweeps back to zero, and a seconds disk that turns once every 90 seconds. Its most distinctive feature is not simply that it shows time differently, but how its minute display makes the return leg part of the show.
How the No.8 displays the time
The Hour Channel jumps
The hour appears in a channel and advances instantly when the hour changes, rather than moving continuously around a conventional 12-hour dial. MinebeaMitsumi describes this as an instant switch on the hour.
The Minute Fader travels, then returns
A fader-like indicator moves across the minute scale toward 60. At the hour change, it returns to zero through a controlled retrograde motion linked to a flywheel. In a conventional retrograde display, an indicator reaches the end of its scale and snaps back; the No.8’s mechanism is designed to make that reset slow enough to watch.
Designer Jiro Katayama explained the idea in an interview published by Chronos Japan: “I wanted to create a watch like the retrograde watches made by Ulysse Nardin, a retrograde watch that uses a string to slowly return the hands to zero.” Katayama says a balance spring resets the fader while a heavy flywheel governs its return. He also explains that increasing the gear ratio to slow the reset further would stop the watch from working. This is the designer’s account of the design, not an independent performance test. The seconds disk completes a turn in 90 seconds
Seconds are shown on a rotating disk. One full rotation takes 90 seconds, rather than the 60 seconds a conventional seconds hand takes to complete a revolution. That means the disk’s position alone should not be read as a conventional one-minute sweep; the display uses its own scale and motion.
What is inside the No.8?
The watch uses an automatic MIYOTA 90S5 as its base, topped with a display module made by ŌTSUKA LŌTEC. MinebeaMitsumi and Hodinkee report that the module contains 62 components. The movement is specified with 33 jewels plus three ball bearings, runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and has an approximately 32-hour power reserve. Those are published specifications, not a guarantee of an individual watch’s measured reserve or accuracy.

MinebeaMitsumi, which supplied miniature bearings for the module, identifies three: one with a 1.5 mm outside diameter and two with a 2.5 mm outside diameter. The company describes the 1.5 mm bearing as the world’s smallest commercial steel ball bearing, citing a Guinness World Records title awarded in 2015. That claim is specific to commercial steel ball bearings, not every type of bearing. MinebeaMitsumi’s No.8 release
The side glazing offers a view of the minute-fader lever moving between two dial layers, making the mechanism more visible than it would be from a front-on view alone.

Why the design looks like an instrument
The No.8’s channel and fader invite comparison with studio mixing equipment. Specialist launch coverage describes that as an inspiration for the display, but the maker’s own description is broader: Katayama says he is drawn to metal objects assembled from parts and to tactile analog controls such as turning knobs and pulling levers. The brand presents his watches as objects he wants to wear and own. ŌTSUKA LŌTEC official site
That distinction matters: a mixing-console analogy helps explain the visual language, but the official statement does not establish a specific recording studio as the watch’s source. The layered dial, visible lever and deliberately mechanical reset give the No.8 an instrument-like character without requiring a more specific origin story.

The launch price reported in 2026 was ¥990,000 including tax. MinebeaMitsumi reported a one-year warranty. The initial sales were lottery-based, with Mynavi News reporting that the first lottery was announced for March 23, 2026. Hodinkee reported that the No.8 is not a limited edition; that does not mean a particular watch is currently available to buy. Who is the No.8 for?
The No.8 will make the most sense to someone who values a mechanical display as much as conventional legibility. The hour is easy to identify, but reading the time requires becoming familiar with the channel, fader and seconds disk rather than relying on familiar hands. Its appeal is the engineered sequence—minute travel, measured return and a nonstandard seconds rotation—not a claim of improved timekeeping. The supplied specifications do not establish independent accuracy or durability results.
