The Paulin Mara is the Scottish brand’s first dive-watch line, pairing a graphic, playful dial with familiar dive-watch hardware and a manufacturer-published 30 ATM (300 m) water-resistance rating. Its most useful buying details are compact dimensions for a modern diver, an automatic La Joux-Perret movement, and two included straps. The rating is a published specification, not evidence of ISO 6425 certification.
What makes the Mara different?
Paulin describes Mara as its first dive watch and connects the name with the Scots Gaelic word for “of the sea.” Rather than follow a conventional tool-watch look, it uses geometric markers, a bespoke “Wim” typeface and a lacquered dial. The result aims for a more graphic, light-hearted character while retaining recognizable diver features such as a unidirectional timing bezel and luminous elements.
In its development account, Paulin says the project began after a 2023 conversation with diver and watch journalist Jason Heaton about what makes a good water-oriented watch. The brand says it worked on contrast and lume because colors that look clear in daylight can lose definition underwater. Paulin also recounts a May 2025 trip around Scotland’s Outer Hebrides that included snorkeling and diving. That is the maker’s account of its design process and field use, not an independent test report.

How does it wear?
The 39.7 mm diameter and 48 mm lug-to-lug measurement give a more useful fit picture than diameter alone: compare both with a watch that already wears comfortably on your wrist. At 13.5 mm overall, the Mara is not especially thin, and the double-domed crystal contributes to that measurement; Paulin lists the case at 10.8 mm without the crystal.
Hodinkee’s hands-on feature reports that its reviewer found the fabric strap comfortable, while the rubber strap’s flare did not suit that reviewer’s wrist. Fratello’s review describes the geometric dial and reports trying both versions. These are individual impressions, not guarantees about how the watch or straps will fit you.

Are the Mara’s diving credentials established?
Paulin publishes a 30 ATM water-resistance rating and markets the Mara to 300 m. Its product page and independent launch coverage also describe a 120-click unidirectional bezel and luminous bezel treatment. Those are relevant specifications for judging a dive-oriented watch, but the available sources do not establish ISO 6425 certification. A depth figure by itself should not be read as proof of that certification.
Paulin’s account of snorkeling and diving during development adds context, but it is not a controlled test report. If formal certification or documented testing is essential to your purchase, seek confirmation from the brand rather than inferring it from the rating or the development story.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider it?
The Mara makes most sense for someone who wants the practical cues of a dive watch in a less conventional, more graphic design. Its listed dimensions give you a specific basis for checking fit, and the two included strap styles offer different ways to wear it. Compare it with other divers on case length and thickness, bezel legibility and operation, water-resistance rating and certification, movement and servicing, strap comfort, and price; the published information alone does not make it a better choice than a particular alternative.
