Seiko’s Prospex Speedtimer is a chronograph family inspired by the company’s sports-timing history and its 1969 Speedtimer. Today’s collection includes both solar and automatic mechanical chronographs, but the watches do not share one standard size, movement, or specification. The reference number matters: an SSC813 solar model and an SRQ047 mechanical model, for example, belong to different branches of the family.
What is the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer?
Seiko presents Speedtimer as a Prospex chronograph collection linked to the brand’s long involvement in timekeeping and sports timing. Its collection materials describe the modern series as inspired by the 1969 Speedtimer. Seiko’s mechanical product page calls that 1969 watch “the world’s first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch”; that is Seiko’s historical claim.
The modern collection began with six watches announced in 2021: two mechanical chronographs and four solar chronographs. That is the original launch group, not a count of the current collection. Seiko’s US collection listings have since expanded to include additional and limited references, and lineups can differ by market. See Seiko’s US Speedtimer collection.
Solar or mechanical: the two main chronograph branches
The most useful first distinction is the movement. Solar Speedtimers use light-powered quartz calibers, while mechanical Speedtimers use automatic chronograph calibers. Seiko’s published mechanical family materials list both 8R46 and 8R48; check the caliber named for the specific reference rather than assuming all mechanical models use the same one.

| Branch | Example caliber | What the cited specifications establish | What to verify by reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solar chronographs | V192 | For the V192, Seiko specifies a 60-minute chronograph, 24-hour sub-dial, and power-reserve indicator. The SSC813 is listed with a 39 mm case and curved sapphire glass. | Dimensions, water resistance, crystal, bracelet or strap, and price for the exact model and market. |
| Mechanical chronographs | 8R46 or 8R48 | Seiko’s family listings assign these calibers to different references. For the 2021 SRQ035 and SRQ037 launch models, Seiko stated a 45-hour power reserve for the 8R46. | Caliber, case dimensions, water resistance, edition status, and price for the exact model and market. |
Solar Speedtimers: V192 and the SSC813 example
The SSC813 is a useful reference point for the solar branch, not a template for every solar Speedtimer. Seiko lists its case diameter as 39 mm and describes curved sapphire glass and a sandblasted dial finish. Its V192 caliber provides a 60-minute chronograph, a 24-hour sub-dial, and a power-reserve indicator shown at the touch of a button. Check the SSC813’s official specifications.
The first solar group—SSC813, SSC815, SSC817, and SSC819—was announced in 2021 with group specifications of 39.0 mm diameter, 13.3 mm thickness, 10 bar water resistance, curved sapphire crystal, and the V192 solar chronograph caliber. Those are launch-era specifications for that group; they should not be transferred automatically to later solar references.

Seiko’s solar collection page also features an 8A50-powered 1/100-second chronograph subfamily. That function belongs to the 8A50 models, not to the V192, whose stated chronograph capability is 60 minutes. Browse Seiko’s solar Speedtimer listings and confirm the caliber and functions on the individual model page.
Mechanical Speedtimers: 8R46 and 8R48
The original mechanical pair, SRQ035 and SRQ037, use automatic caliber 8R46. Seiko’s 2021 announcement gave the pair a 42.5 mm diameter, 15.1 mm thickness, and 10 bar water resistance, and stated a 45-hour power reserve for the caliber. Seiko also described the movement as using a column wheel and vertical clutch. These figures refer to those launch models, not every mechanical Speedtimer.

Current mechanical family materials show a broader range of references and calibers: SRQ047, SRQ051, and SRQ053 are listed with 8R48, while SRQ043 and SRQ039 are listed with 8R46. Styling is reference-specific. Seiko links the SRQ047’s panda-style dial and orange-tipped chronograph seconds hand to a 1972 design, while the SRQ043’s blue and red colors reference the 1969 Speedtimer. Check Seiko’s current mechanical family listings.
How to compare individual Speedtimer references
Compare the model page for the exact reference you are considering. Shared collection branding does not establish shared case dimensions, functions, construction, or availability.

- Tachymeter Feature: Measure Speed
- Secure Case Back: Screw Type
- Movement and caliber: distinguish solar V192 or 8A50 models from automatic mechanical models, and confirm whether a mechanical reference uses 8R46 or 8R48.
- Chronograph function: check the stated timing scale and sub-dial functions. The V192’s documented function is a 60-minute chronograph; the 1/100-second function is associated with the separate 8A50 subfamily.
- Fit: compare diameter and thickness for the precise model. The SSC813 is listed at 39 mm in Seiko’s current US product page, while the 2021 SRQ035/SRQ037 launch specifications give 42.5 mm diameter and 15.1 mm thickness.
- Display and design: look at dial color, sub-dial arrangement, bezel, hand colors, markers, and finishing. These details vary across references.
- Construction and use: verify crystal, bracelet or strap, water resistance, and any other feature that matters to your use. The original 2021 solar group and mechanical pair were specified at 10 bar, but that does not establish the rating for later models.
- Edition and market: check whether a watch is limited and whether it is listed in your region. Seiko’s US page is a regional lineup, not proof of worldwide availability.
What the 2021 prices and limited-edition figures mean
Seiko’s 2021 announcement listed a US retail price of $725 for the original solar group, $3,200 for the limited SRQ035, and $3,000 for the SRQ037. It described the SRQ035 as limited to 1,000 watches. These are historical launch figures, not current offers or confirmation of present stock. Current price and availability depend on model, market, and date; consult the relevant regional listing or retailer.
