Ressence’s 2024 update refined the TYPE 3 rather than changing its core architecture. The Black and White share the oil-filled display and listed specifications; their documented differences are the dial finish, strap, and color presentation. The revisions include a finalized custom typeface, a simplified hour disc, a redesigned shock absorber and caseback, and pastel indicator colors.
What changed in the 2024 TYPE 3 update?
Ressence announced the refreshed TYPE 3 Black and TYPE 3 White on 20 September 2024, with the launch scheduled for 3 October 2024 and worldwide retailer-network availability expected in late fall 2024, according to the company’s 2024 press release. The update focused on the dial and case rather than a new movement architecture.
A new typeface and a simpler hour disc
The most visible revision is Ressence’s finalized custom typeface. The company says its rounded numeral and index ends echo the round milling tool used to shape the titanium dial. The hour disc now uses indexes every two hours, simplifying its markings.
Revised indicators, shock absorber, and caseback
Ressence also redesigned the shock absorber, gave the weekend-day and oil-temperature indicators pastel tones, and reworked the caseback to harmonize with the dial. The company’s press-center summary characterizes the new dial and case as an effort to augment readability; that is Ressence’s stated aim, not the result of an independent comparative test.

How do the Black and White versions differ?
The documented differences are concentrated in their appearance and straps. The launch release identifies no difference in their core mechanism or listed case specifications.

Both versions are listed with a titanium ardillon buckle, a 44 mm diameter, 15 mm thickness, 1 ATM splash resistance, a weight of 79 g, and 387 components. Ressence also lists a 36-hour power reserve for each. These are the manufacturer’s specifications in its 2024 release; no independent comparative reading test establishes that one dial is objectively easier to read than the other.

How does the oil-filled display work?
Ressence describes the TYPE 3 as having two sealed chambers: oil and the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) in the upper half, and air and the base calibre in the lower half. The upper display contains 3.57 ml of oil. A compensating bellows system accommodates the oil’s expansion and contraction as temperature changes.
According to Ressence’s explanation of its oil-filled watch technology, filling the display with oil reduces the visual separation caused by refraction, making the dial appear close to the crystal, like information projected onto a screen. The company presents this optical effect as a legibility benefit; the available material does not establish it through independent testing.

Ressence says it fills and seals the TYPE 3, TYPE 5, and TYPE 7 at -5°C, when the oil is at its minimum volume. The bellows then compensates for volume changes during use.
What did the watches cost, and what does Ressence show now?
At launch in 2024, Ressence listed each version at CHF 38,200 excluding taxes. The current official TYPE 3 collection page displays €50,600 for both the Black and White and labels each “Sold Out” at the time of access. Those are separate snapshots in different currencies and on different dates, not a like-for-like price comparison. Stock and displayed prices can change, and availability may vary by region.

What maintenance does Ressence recommend?
Ressence recommends a complete overhaul every three to five years, depending on how the watch has been used, and an annual water-resistance test. The company says complete overhauls should be performed only at an authorized Ressence service center. Its service and maintenance guidance gives the recommendation; TYPE 3 video and PDF manuals are available through the official user manuals page.
