Apple’s current major beta generation is iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and watchOS 27. The iOS 26 public beta was announced for July 2025 after Apple previewed the software on June 9, 2025.
For Apple Watch owners, the key point is risk: watchOS betas require a compatible paired iPhone and cannot normally be rolled back by the user to an earlier public watchOS release.

What Apple actually announced
Apple announced iOS 26 and its companion operating systems on June 9, 2025. The developer betas became available immediately, while Apple said the public beta would arrive through the Apple Beta Software Program the following month. That announcement did not establish an exact public-beta launch day.
The historical beta family included:
- iOS 26 for iPhone
- iPadOS 26 for iPad
- tvOS 26 for Apple TV
- watchOS 26 for Apple Watch
Apple also tested corresponding updates for Mac and Apple Vision Pro. As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s developer release listings identify iOS 27 and the corresponding 27-series platforms as the current major beta generation, while iOS 26 appears in maintenance releases such as iOS 26.6 and its release candidate. See Apple’s release listings for the current build status.

Beta, release candidate, and final release are not the same
| Software stage | Who it is for | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Developer beta | Developers and technical testers | Early pre-release software for compatibility testing. |
| Public beta | Enrolled volunteers and enthusiasts | A broader test release, but still unfinished and potentially unstable. |
| Release candidate | Final-stage testers | A build considered a candidate for release, subject to any remaining changes. |
| General release | All compatible users | The production version Apple distributes as a normal software update. |
Calling any beta “the new version” without identifying its stage can be misleading. Features, compatibility, performance, and even the interface can change before the general release.
What was new in iOS 26?
Apple’s iOS 26 preview centered on a redesigned system interface, Apple Intelligence improvements, and updates to Phone, Messages, CarPlay, Apple Music, Maps, and Wallet. Apple also introduced the Apple Games app, expanded communication and parental-control tools, and accessibility features such as Accessibility Reader and Braille Access.
Those were announced features, not a guarantee that every device received every capability in the first public beta. Apple warned that availability could vary by device, language, region, and local law. Some Apple Intelligence functions also required supported hardware and language settings, and could be delayed or restricted independently of basic iOS 26 compatibility. Apple’s iOS 26 feature reference provides the broader feature list.

What was new in iPadOS 26?
iPadOS 26 adopted the new visual language while adding iPad-specific changes to multitasking and window management. Apple also highlighted productivity improvements, Preview and document-markup capabilities, Apple Pencil-related workflows, and Apple Intelligence on compatible iPads.
Compatibility with iPadOS 26 did not mean that every iPad received every advanced feature. Hardware requirements could differ for Apple Intelligence, external-display behavior, multitasking, and hardware-accelerated functions. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 26 release notes are the authoritative source for build-specific restrictions, fixes, API changes, and workarounds.

What was new in tvOS 26?
tvOS 26 was tested separately for compatible Apple TV hardware. Its installation process is not simply the iPhone or iPad process copied onto a television: Apple documents a distinct Apple TV beta route that can involve a Mac and configuration resources. Check Apple’s beta installation documentation for the method supported by the specific Apple TV model and program.
Much Apple TV content and purchase information is stored in the cloud, which can make recovery less personal-data intensive than on a phone. It does not remove the practical risks: a beta can cause crashes, app incompatibility, streaming problems, or disruption for everyone using the television.

watchOS 26 brought the new interface and Apple’s announced improvements to activity, communication, and personalization. Apple listed support for Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and all Apple Watch Ultra models, paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. Beta support should always be checked against the requirements for the exact build.
WatchOS is the least forgiving platform for casual beta testing. Installation is performed through the paired iPhone’s Watch app, and the watch must remain paired with a compatible iPhone running the required software. Apple states that users cannot normally restore an Apple Watch running beta software to a previous released watchOS version themselves.
Apple’s release notes also recorded watch-specific problems during testing, including issues involving Watch apps with a watchOS 26 minimum version and complications appearing incorrectly in the Watch app. Developers should read the notes for the exact beta before testing on a production watch.

Compatibility: running the OS is not the same as getting every feature
iPhone
Apple said iOS 26 would be available as a free update for iPhone 11 and later. That is the operating-system compatibility list, not an Apple Intelligence list.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple Intelligence support was narrower and included iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, along with compatible iPad mini, iPad, and Mac hardware. Apple also applied language and regional requirements. A compatible iPhone could therefore run iOS 26 while lacking some Apple Intelligence features.
iPad
iPadOS 26 feature support varied by model. Advanced multitasking, external-display behavior, Apple Intelligence, and other hardware-dependent functions could have separate requirements. Use the release notes and Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature reference rather than assuming feature parity across the iPad lineup.
Apple Watch
The announced watchOS 26 requirements were Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), or any Apple Watch Ultra, paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. A later beta may change requirements, so confirm them before enrolling.
How installation worked
iPhone and iPad
- Enroll the device with an Apple Account in the Apple Beta Software Program.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Open Beta Updates and choose the relevant public-beta channel.
- Return to Software Update and install the offered update.
Labels can change between operating-system generations. If the Beta Updates option is missing, confirm that the device is enrolled with the same Apple Account and consult Apple’s current beta FAQ.

Apple Watch
- Enroll the paired iPhone in the relevant Apple beta program.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then General and Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates and select the watchOS beta.
- Install with the watch charging and within range of the paired iPhone.
The paired iPhone may need to run a matching or compatible iOS beta. Do not begin unless you accept that the watch may be difficult or impossible for you to return to stable software.
Apple TV
Apple TV uses a separate beta process. Follow the Apple TV instructions in Apple’s installation guide instead of assuming the iPhone enrollment steps apply unchanged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Back up before installing
- Create an iCloud or computer backup of your iPhone or iPad before installation.
- Confirm that the backup predates the beta.
- Keep important photos, documents, authenticator information, and recovery codes somewhere independent of the device.
- Do not assume a backup made on beta software will restore cleanly to an earlier production release.
- If the device is essential for work, travel, payments, health tracking, or two-factor authentication, use a spare device instead.
Apple recommends backing up before installing beta software. A backup protects data; it does not guarantee a frictionless downgrade.
Leaving the beta and reverting to stable software
Unenrolling stops future beta updates, but it does not immediately remove the beta already installed. The device remains on that software until a compatible non-beta update arrives, unless you perform an eligible restore.

iPhone and iPad users can generally restore to a previous shipping release with a computer, but the process may erase the device and require a compatible pre-beta backup. Apple Watch is different: Apple’s beta FAQ warns that users cannot normally downgrade it themselves to a previous released watchOS version.

Known beta risks
Possible problems include reduced battery life, heat, crashes, failed app installation, connectivity issues, and incompatibility with banking, streaming, enterprise, VPN, fitness, or authentication apps. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS release notes included examples such as devices failing to start properly after an update and Apple Watch app-installation problems.
Release notes are more useful than a launch feature list when deciding whether to install. Developers should check the notes for the exact build, including known issues, API changes, deprecations, fixes, and workarounds.
Who should install?
Install if you are testing an app, have a spare or replaceable device, maintain a restorable backup, can tolerate instability, and are willing to report problems through Feedback Assistant.
Wait if this is your only phone or Apple Watch, you rely on Apple Pay or health tracking, you need dependable battery life and connectivity, or you cannot tolerate a difficult recovery.
For most readers, iOS and iPadOS are easier to recover from than watchOS. tvOS may hold less personal data, but it can still disrupt a household. watchOS carries the greatest rollback risk because the user cannot normally return it to an earlier public release.
Current status
The headline “iOS 26 public beta now available” describes a 2025 event. In August 2026, the current major beta story is iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and watchOS 27. iOS 26 remains relevant as a supported release and maintenance branch, but it should not be presented as newly available.
