That is the basis for Time+Tide reviewer Andrew McUtchen’s view that the watch is “getting better with age”: a design judgment, not evidence that its timekeeping or market value improves over time.
What changed on the 2017 Sky-Dweller?
For its first five years, the Sky-Dweller was offered only in precious metals, according to McUtchen’s 2020 retrospective. The 2017-era range added a steel-and-white-gold option, making the design available in a less precious-metal-heavy configuration. The case remained 42 mm.
The dial also changed. The earlier radial Arabic or Roman numerals gave way to elongated applied baton markers filled with Chromalight, while the off-centre 24-hour disc was made to match the dial color. McUtchen regarded the result as simpler to read and sportier. Those are his assessments, not a measured legibility comparison or a claim of universal preference. His verdict was that the redesign and more accessible case material made an already strong watch “just a little bit greater.” Time+Tide’s retrospective, published April 21, 2020, includes archive photographs and video of the update.
How the Sky-Dweller displays two time zones and the date
Central hour, minute and seconds hands show local time. An off-centre 24-hour disc tracks reference time, allowing the wearer to distinguish day from night in the second time zone. The date appears at 3 o’clock.

The annual calendar shows the month through 12 apertures around the dial. Rolex’s Saros mechanism accounts for months with 30 and 31 days, so the calendar requires a correction once each year: on March 1, after February’s 28 or 29 days. What the fluted bezel does
The bezel is more than a visual signature: it is part of Rolex’s Ring Command system. Turning it counterclockwise selects which function the crown will adjust. Rolex’s current operating explanation assigns one, two or three bezel positions to the calendar, local time or reference time, respectively; the crown then changes the selected setting.

This is the control architecture relevant to the 2017-era watch. The bezel does not independently set the displayed values; it selects the function for adjustment at the crown.
Calibre 9001: the movement in the 2017-era watch
The 2017-era Sky-Dweller uses Rolex calibre 9001. A Rolex brochure for the 9001-equipped reference 326935 lists a 42 mm case, 100 metres (330 feet) of water resistance and an approximately 72-hour power reserve. That brochure describes an Everose-gold model, so those case-material details should not be transferred to the steel-and-white-gold configuration discussed in the 2017 update. The reference 326935 brochure is the source for those specifications.

Generation matters when comparing it with a current Sky-Dweller: Rolex says calibre 9001 equipped the model from its 2012 launch, and revealed calibre 9002 as its successor in 2023. The later movement should not be confused with the calibre in the 2017-era watch. Rolex’s Sky-Dweller features page gives that movement chronology.

A later example shows that the Sky-Dweller collection continued to expand without changing the fact that the 2017 update was a specific combination of material and dial changes. Rolex’s 2020 brochure documents reference 326238: a 42 mm yellow-gold Sky-Dweller on an Oysterflex bracelet, still powered by calibre 9001. It is a subsequent material-and-bracelet variant, not the steel-and-white-gold configuration introduced in 2017. The 2020 reference 326238 brochure identifies that version.

What “getting better with age” does—and does not—mean
The phrase captures McUtchen’s favorable retrospective view of the 2017 design: the simpler markers, matching time-zone disc and added steel-and-white-gold option improved the watch’s appeal for him. The cited material does not establish that the watch’s performance improves as it ages, nor does it provide evidence of appreciation or resale-value trends. For a comparison with later versions, the grounded points are case material and bracelet, dial layout, movement generation, and the continuing dual-time, annual-calendar and Ring Command functions.
