Bovet’s modern history begins in 1822, but the foundations were laid by an international trade route: watchmaking in Fleurier, a London business connection and customers in China. Its identity took shape through ornate pocket watches and technical invention, and the modern brand still draws on that heritage.
How an international watch business began
Bovet traces its watchmaking roots to Jean-Frédéric Bovet in Fleurier, in Switzerland’s Val-de-Travers region. In 1814, three of his sons—Édouard, Alphonse and Frédéric—left for London, where they worked for the trading firm Magniac & Co. The arrangement placed the family near the commercial networks that connected European makers with distant markets.
In 1818, Édouard traveled from Deal, England, to Guangzhou carrying four pocket watches, according to Bovet’s account. The watches sold quickly. The brand says the response showed the family the scale of the Chinese market; its retrospective estimate that the sale represented about one million Swiss francs in today’s money should be understood as Bovet’s own historical valuation, not an audited conversion.
Édouard and his brothers founded the company in 1822. Bovet says it was officially registered in London on May 1 of that year. The business linked London, Fleurier and Guangzhou: London provided organization and transit, Fleurier was the principal production center, and Guangzhou was a key sales destination. This history also reflects the wider importance of China to Swiss watch exports; the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry describes the historic China trade as a significant part of the industry’s development (Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry).

The pocket watches that made Bovet’s name
Bovet’s early reputation rested on elaborate pocket watches made for Chinese imperial and aristocratic customers. The brand’s history describes enamel miniatures, cloisonné and flinqué enamel, engraving and finely finished movements. Some watches were sold in pairs, making decoration and presentation part of the appeal as much as the mechanism.
Bovet also attributes the Chinese transliteration “Bowei” to a broader cultural legacy, saying it became a common word for a fine watch. That is the company’s account of the term’s history, rather than an independently established linguistic finding.

At the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris, Bovet says it received a gold medal in the luxury category for a pair of enamel pocket watches commissioned by the Xianfeng Emperor. The episode captures the combination that defined the early house: high-level decorative work made for an international clientele.
Fleurier’s role in the story
Bovet’s identity was never only about distant customers. Its production helped anchor watchmaking in Fleurier and the surrounding valley. On its official history page, the company says it employed more than 175 artisans in and around Fleurier during the 1800s. It also gives a regional comparison: fewer than 200 people worked in watchmaking in the valley at the start of the 19th century, versus more than 2,000 a century later. These are figures published by Bovet, not independently verified workforce counts.

The numbers help explain why Bovet’s history matters locally as well as commercially. The brand’s China-facing business depended on skilled work in the Swiss valley, bringing together decorative crafts and watchmaking expertise in a regional production network.
From display backs to chronographs
Bovet’s chronology includes technical developments alongside its decorative tradition. The company credits its watchmakers with introducing an exhibition back, allowing the movement to be seen through the case, and records an 1889 flyback chronograph whose two subdials could be used to show a second time zone.

In the 1930s, Bovet says it developed the Easel Chronometer, which was patented in Switzerland. A mono-pusher chronograph followed in the 1940s. These milestones come from the brand’s own history; they show the direction of its innovation but do not, by themselves, establish priority over every comparable design of the period.

For its bicentenary, Bovet displayed more than 60 vintage and modern watches at Château de Môtiers, according to the company’s account, published around 2022. In the same account, Bovet cited more than 40 awards over 21 years and more than 20 patents. Those are cumulative claims tied to the company’s bicentenary-era account, not current totals.
How modern watches connect to the pocket-watch legacy
One visible link is the Amadeo system. Bovet says it allows a watch to be converted without tools between wristwatch, pocket-watch and table-clock configurations. The GPHG record for the Virtuoso VII also describes those three modes, confirming that the system is used on at least that model; it should not be assumed to apply to every Bovet watch (GPHG record for the Virtuoso VII).
The current Fleurier collection makes another connection explicit: Bovet presents it as drawing on the pocket-watch tradition. The collection’s case design and details should be considered model by model rather than treated as universal across the brand. For the company’s current collections and brand information, see Bovet’s official site and its Fleurier collection.
Bovet’s long arc is therefore not simply a story of old watches revived for modern buyers. The house emerged from a cross-border business, built prestige through decorative pocket watches, and developed technical ideas alongside its craft. Its present-day identity draws on those strands without making every contemporary model a replica of the past.
