The 42 mm Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional in 18K Sedna gold keeps the familiar Moonwatch layout but gives it a warmer, more luxurious finish—and a substantial 218 g solid-gold bracelet watch. Nick Kenyon’s 2021 review found its proportions and design compelling; whether it is worth choosing over a steel Moonwatch comes down chiefly to the precious-metal character, weight and price you want. Omega identified the model as reference 310.60.42.50.01.001 in a January 5, 2026 press-room article, but that announcement does not establish today’s price or availability.
What makes this Moonwatch different?
The central change is material, not design. The reviewed watch has a 42 mm case and solid-gold bracelet in 18K Sedna gold, Omega’s proprietary gold alloy. Its black dial and bezel preserve the contrast and recognizable instrument-watch character associated with the Moonwatch, while gold-tone hands and markings give it a dressier appearance.
The 2021 review describes the bezel as black aluminium, with the historically familiar “dot over 90” detail on the tachymeter scale. The black dial has a sun-brushed finish and a step down to the minute track; the review also notes an applied Omega logo. These details keep the gold version visually connected to the Moonwatch rather than turning it into a wholly different design.
Dimensions, weight and wrist fit
Nick Kenyon’s February 1, 2021 review gives the case as 42 mm across, 47.3 mm lug-to-lug and 13.18 mm thick. It reports a total watch weight of 218 g and a bracelet that tapers from 20 mm at the lugs to 15 mm at the clasp.

Those figures make the weight an important part of the decision. Kenyon’s assessment of how the bracelet wears is a subjective impression, not a fit guarantee: wrist size, personal preference and tolerance for a heavy watch vary. If possible, try it on before buying, paying attention not just to the case diameter but to the combined effect of the lug-to-lug span and the solid-gold bracelet.
Movement and practical specifications
The watch is powered by Omega Calibre 3861, a hand-wound chronograph movement. The review describes it as a METAS-certified Master Chronometer with a co-axial escapement, a 50-hour power reserve and resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. It lists water resistance at 50 m.

Omega’s historical account says NASA declared the Speedmaster “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions” on March 1, 1965. That heritage helps explain the Moonwatch’s enduring identity, but it is distinct from the modern gold model’s materials and specifications; Omega’s retrospective is available in “60 Years Since NASA Qualification.”

How to think about it beside a steel Moonwatch
The meaningful comparison is not simply “gold versus steel.” Consider what the precious metal changes—and what the reviewed specifications do not suggest it changes:
- Appearance: Sedna gold, gold-tone dial furniture and a black-and-gold palette make this version more conspicuous and luxurious than the familiar steel look.
- Feel: The review’s reported 218 g total weight makes heft a defining practical difference. The review does not provide a comparable steel-watch weight, so a numerical weight comparison is not established here.
- Core identity: The 42 mm format, black tachymeter bezel, chronograph layout and Calibre 3861 preserve the recognizable Moonwatch design and movement story.
- Cost: The review reported an A$53,150 price in 2021. That historical figure is not a current quote, and it should not be used to calculate today’s premium over steel.
For a current comparison, check the exact references and prices offered in your market, and verify whether the steel watch you are considering has the same movement generation and bracelet configuration. The available sources do not establish current prices for either version.

Kenyon’s review treated the gold watch as a persuasive expression of the Moonwatch rather than a compromise of its identity. Its closing reference to a gold Speedmaster intended for President Richard Nixon is historical context from the review: Nixon did not accept the watch, which it says remains in the Omega Museum. That anecdote adds a link between the Moonwatch and gold, but it does not answer whether this modern reference is good value at today’s price.
The review reported A$53,150 and boutique-only availability when it was published on February 1, 2021. Those are dated details, not reliable buying information for 2026. Who should consider the Sedna gold version?
This version makes the most sense for someone who specifically wants the Moonwatch’s familiar design in precious metal and is comfortable with the feel of a heavy solid-gold bracelet. It is less suited to a buyer whose priorities are the traditional steel appearance, lower wrist weight or a current price advantage that has not been verified. The watch’s appeal is ultimately personal; the specifications explain what it is, but trying it on is the best way to judge how its size and heft work for you.
