The original L.U.C 1860 arrived in 1997, a year after Chopard introduced its first in-house L.U.C movement. The currently listed US model, reference 168860-3005, updates the formula with a 36.5 mm Lucent Steel case, a blue guilloché gold dial and the modern automatic caliber 96.40-L.
Why the L.U.C 1860 matters in Chopard’s history
Chopard’s L.U.C story began with a movement. In 1996, the company introduced the L.U.C 96.01-L, its first in-house automatic micro-rotor caliber and the starting point for the L.U.C collection. The first L.U.C 1860 watch followed in 1997. Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele has described the collection as expressing “a visionary conception of Haute Horlogerie” since 1997. Chopard’s L.U.C collection history places the collection’s beginnings in that period.

The 1860 name refers to the year Chopard was founded; the watch itself is a modern-era milestone for the company’s manufacture watchmaking. Its significance lies in combining a slim, time-focused dress-watch design with Chopard’s own movement work, rather than in being a complication-heavy showcase.
Is the current Chopard L.U.C 1860 a reissue?
“Reissue” is understandable shorthand because the current watch revives the 1997 model’s name, compact case size, no-date display and emphasis on a finely finished dial and in-house movement. But the 2023 steel watch was not an unchanged reproduction: it introduced a new case material and a modern movement, and specialist coverage characterized it as an evolution or reintroduction. The current blue-dial reference continues that approach rather than reproducing every detail of the original.

That distinction matters if you are comparing the watches as historical objects. The modern model is designed to echo the first L.U.C 1860 while using contemporary materials and a later-generation caliber. It is therefore most accurate to call it a continuation or evolution of the original.
1997 original vs. the modern L.U.C 1860
| Feature | 1997 L.U.C 1860 | Current reference 168860-3005 |
|---|---|---|
| Case | The original was a 36.5 mm watch; its case material is not specified in the cited current product listing or the cited 2023 reviews. | 36.5 mm Lucent Steel; 8.2 mm thick. |
| Dial | The original design established the collection’s refined dress-watch character; a precise dial color is not specified in the cited sources. | Hand-guilloché gold in Areuse Blue. |
| Date | The original was associated with caliber 1.96, which included a date display. | No date; hours, minutes and small seconds only. |
| Movement | Caliber 1.96, the original movement lineage. | Automatic caliber 96.40-L with a 22-carat gold micro-rotor and two stacked barrels. |
| Availability | Historical model; current availability is not stated in the cited sources. | Listed by Chopard US as a boutique-exclusive model; availability may vary. |
The comparison highlights both continuity and change. The modern watch retains the original’s scale and a clean, no-date presentation, but its caliber is not simply the old movement carried forward. The 96.40-L is a later design, and its omission of a date differs from the date-equipped 1.96 lineage.
What movement is in the current L.U.C 1860?
Chopard’s current US listing specifies the automatic L.U.C 96.40-L. It measures 3.3 mm thick and uses a 22-carat gold micro-rotor to wind its two stacked barrels. Chopard lists approximately 65 hours of power reserve, a 4 Hz frequency, 176 parts and 29 jewels. The movement is COSC-certified as a chronometer and bears the Poinçon de Genève hallmark. These are the manufacturer’s stated specifications, not the result of an independent accuracy test. See Chopard’s product listing for reference 168860-3005.
In practical terms, the watch displays hours, minutes and small seconds without a date. The relatively slim movement supports the 8.2 mm case profile, while the micro-rotor helps keep the winding mechanism integrated within the caliber’s overall height.

What is the difference between the salmon and blue L.U.C 1860?
The 2023 Lucent Steel release had a salmon- or copper-toned gold dial and introduced the updated no-date caliber 96.40-L in the 1860 line. The currently listed reference 168860-3005 uses an Areuse Blue hand-guilloché gold dial. These are distinct versions; the blue reference is not the dial color shown in the 2023 launch coverage. Hodinkee’s 2023 introduction and Fratello’s 2023 review concern the salmon/copper-dial launch model.
Fratello reported the salmon-dial model at 36.5 mm in diameter, 44.5 mm lug-to-lug and 8.2 mm thick, with a stated 65-hour reserve and 28,800 vibrations per hour. Those are figures for that 2023 version, not a separate current specification set for the blue reference. Fratello’s €25,700 / US$23,700 prices were launch-era figures and should not be treated as today’s price.

Who is the modern L.U.C 1860 for?
The watch makes most sense for someone seeking a compact, slim dress watch with a refined guilloché dial and a technically distinctive automatic movement. Its proportions and no-date layout keep the design close to the spirit of the first 1860, while Lucent Steel and the 96.40-L make clear that this is a contemporary interpretation rather than a museum-faithful replica.
