Is the Garmin epix Pro (Gen 2) Worth Buying in 2026?

The epix Pro (Gen 2) remains compelling for training, maps, AMOLED and a built-in flashlight—if its local price is meaningfully below a comparable newer Fenix.

Yes—if you want a bright AMOLED sports watch with detailed training tools, maps, multi-band GPS and a built-in flashlight, and you can buy the configuration you want for substantially less than a comparable newer Fenix. It is a less compelling choice if you need newer features such as a speaker and microphone, diving capability, or—on the Fenix 8 Pro—LTE and satellite connectivity. Your decision should turn on the size, display and features you want, plus the local price gap.

What you get with the epix Pro (Gen 2)

The epix Pro (Gen 2) is a multisport and outdoor watch with smartphone-connected features, not a phone replacement. Garmin lists AMOLED, touchscreen controls, built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, an LED flashlight, music storage, sleep score and insights, training readiness and status, pulse oximetry, Garmin ECG App and Garmin Pay for the compared Sapphire variants. Features and availability can vary by edition, market and supported services. Garmin’s comparison covers the configurations being compared.

Maps and route guidance are useful for more than backcountry navigation: TechRadar’s reviewer describes loading routes and following turn-by-turn directions during long runs. TechRadar’s review gives that use case. Garmin Pay depends on participating financial institutions and locations, while the flashlight is available on epix Pro (Gen 2) models and can reduce battery life, according to Garmin’s owner’s manual.

Battery life by size and mode

Garmin’s August 2025 epix (Gen 2) Standard/Pro Series Owner’s Manual, version 12, gives the estimates below. These are manufacturer “up to” figures, not guaranteed real-world results. The manual says actual battery life depends on enabled features such as wrist-based heart rate, smartphone notifications, GPS, internal sensors and connected sensors. See Garmin’s manual for the conditions and additional modes.

Which size and edition makes sense?

42 mm: smaller case

Choose this size if a smaller case is your priority. Its listed endurance is the shortest of the three: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode with wrist gesture, or up to 4 days with the display always on. Those are Garmin estimates from the August 2025 manual, not a promise of everyday runtime.

Standard or Sapphire

In its 2026 comparison, Tom’s Guide describes the standard edition as a glass crystal with a steel case and Sapphire as sapphire crystal with a titanium case; it says Sapphire had a $100 launch-price premium. Verify the materials for the exact SKU and market you are considering. Tom’s Guide characterizes Sapphire as lighter and more durable than standard, but whether that premium makes sense depends on the configuration and price. Read the comparison.

Who should buy it—and who should compare alternatives?

It suits training and outdoor use

Runners, hikers and multisport athletes may find the combination of detailed training analysis, on-watch maps and route guidance, multi-band GPS, AMOLED and an integrated flashlight especially useful. Tom’s Guide highlights the rugged design, maps, AMOLED screen and sports tracking as reasons to consider it; TechRadar describes using loaded routes with turn-by-turn guidance on long runs. These are feature and review observations, not independent performance-test results.

Look elsewhere if you need newer capabilities

The epix Pro (Gen 2) launched in 2023 and is an older product generation. Tom’s Guide describes the Fenix 8 AMOLED and Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED as direct successors, and notes that newer models add features including a speaker and microphone and diving capability; the Fenix 8 Pro also offers LTE and satellite connectivity. Compare current models if those functions, or newer Garmin software features, matter to you. That product-generation context does not establish that Garmin has ended support for the epix Pro.

If you prioritize a lighter, slimmer running watch, Tom’s Guide identifies the Garmin Forerunner 970 as an alternative. It also names the Suunto Vertical 2 as an option to consider. Compare the specific models against your needs for AMOLED versus MIP display, size, battery estimates, maps and training tools, and newer features; the right trade-off depends on what you actually use.

Is the price right?

There is no universal price at which the epix Pro (Gen 2) is a good buy: compare the same size and edition, in similar condition, against the newer Fenix you would otherwise choose, using current local listings. Tom’s Guide reported Sapphire examples around $499 for 42 and 47 mm and $549 for 51 mm in its 2026 article, with an occasional low of $449 for the 47 mm. Those were publication-time US observations, not live offers or verified prices for every region. TechRadar cited a UK clearance listing of £369.99 for the 47 mm and a US listing of $619.99 for the 51 mm in an article dated October 29, 2025; these are dated snapshots, not current deals. Check the retailer, exact SKU, condition and local price before deciding. Tom’s Guide’s comparison and TechRadar’s review provide the dated price context.
