The Grand Seiko SBGW231 is a strong choice if you want a compact, time-only watch with an ivory dial and the hands-on feel of manual winding. Its 37.3 mm case is paired with just 30 m of water resistance, so it is better suited to dress and everyday dry wear than regular water use. Whether it is the best Grand Seiko for you comes down to wrist fit, your appetite for hand-winding, and whether its listed price makes sense for your budget.
What the SBGW231 offers
The SBGW231 is a stainless-steel, time-only watch with an ivory dial, box-shaped sapphire crystal, sapphire exhibition caseback and crocodile-leather strap. Its manual-winding Caliber 9S64 has 24 jewels and a stated 72-hour power reserve. The display back lets you see the movement, while winding the watch is part of its daily use rather than an automatic feature.

Grand Seiko lists magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m and static accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day. The accuracy figure is a manufacturer specification, not a promise of that result in every situation: Grand Seiko cautions that actual accuracy can vary with wearing conditions. Will it fit your wrist?
The official US boutique lists the SBGW231 at 37.3 mm in diameter, 44.3 mm in length, and 11.6 mm thick, with a 19 mm lug width. Those dimensions make it a compact option by case diameter, but measurements cannot predict how the watch will feel on your wrist: wrist shape, strap fit, and personal preference matter too.

If possible, try it on before buying. Pay particular attention to how the 44.3 mm case length sits across your wrist and whether the 11.6 mm thickness works under a cuff. The 19 mm lug width is useful to know if you expect to consider another strap.
Is manual winding and 30 m water resistance right for you?
Manual winding
Choose the SBGW231 if you actively want a hand-wound mechanical watch. Caliber 9S64 is not a quartz movement, and its stated 72-hour reserve does not mean it will keep quartz-like time; expect to wind it and accept the variability of mechanical timekeeping.

Water use
Grand Seiko specifies 30 m water resistance for the SBGW231. That is a materially different specification from the 10 bar rating listed for the SBGW291, and the SBGW231 is not the sensible pick if regular water use is a priority. Treat it as a dress or casual watch, not a watch chosen for swimming or other routine water exposure.

The closest comparison depends on what you want to change: the SBGW301 is nearly identical in size and shares the same caliber, while the SBGW291 has a smaller case and a substantially higher stated water-resistance rating.
