Is the Original Seiko SKX Worth Its Premium?

The original Seiko SKX is worth extra mainly for buyers who want that specific discontinued watch. For SKX-inspired daily wear, consider the SRPD; for a current Seiko dive-rated alternative, consider the Prospex Turtle.

Sometimes—but mainly if you want the original SKX itself. The discontinued Seiko SKX007’s design, history and original 200 m ISO-rated dive-watch specification can justify paying more to a collector. If you mostly want the familiar look in an everyday automatic, the current Seiko 5 Sports SRPD is the more practical choice. If you need a current Seiko with a dive rating, the Prospex Turtle is the closer functional alternative, though its case looks different.

What does “worth its premium” mean for an SKX?

There is no dependable figure here for how much more an SKX sells for today. The available sources do not provide recent, authoritative sold prices adjusted for originality, condition, service history, location and authenticity. A discontinued label alone does not establish that a particular watch is worth its asking price.

Instead, judge the premium against what you are buying: an original discontinued watch with its own design and history, rather than simply an SKX-shaped watch. Spring & Dial’s SKX007 reference, updated August 8, 2026, says production ended in 2019. Its cited specifications are for the SKX007; check the exact reference and condition of any example you consider.

What does the original SKX offer?

The cited SKX007 specification is a 42.5 mm round case, 22 mm lug width, Hardlex crystal, 200 m water resistance, ISO 6425 dive rating, a screw-down crown at 4 o’clock and a 7S26 movement. The crown position, proportions and overall design are part of the appeal for buyers who want this specific watch, not just its broad silhouette.

#1 Best Overall
SEIKO SSK001 Automatic Watch for Men - 5 Sports GMT, SKX Series - Blue
  • BLUE DIAL: this handsome men’s watch features a striking deep blue dial with luminous dial indicator hands and markers and date calendar to keep you organized
  • BLUE & BLACK BEZEL: with a 24-hour bezel and easy-to-read fourth hand, this GMT watch helps you keep time as you travel
  • DURABLE UTILITY: these versatile men’s wrist watches feature a 42.5mm stainless steel watch case and bracelet, for a classic, timeless look.
  • WATER-RESISTANT: this rugged sports watch is water-resistant up to 100 meters
  • 4R34 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable 4R34 caliber, these automatic watches for men ensure the most accurate in self winding timekeeping, with 41 hours of reserve power and manual winding option

The 7S26’s practical compromise is that it neither hacks nor hand-winds, according to Dial & Date’s comparison updated August 13, 2026. Hacking lets the seconds hand stop while setting the time; hand-winding lets you wind the watch with the crown. If precise time-setting or convenient winding matters more than owning the original, that trade-off weighs against paying extra.

How do the SKX, SRPD and Turtle compare?

What matters Original SKX007 Seiko 5 Sports SRPD Prospex Turtle
Best fit The original discontinued watch, its design and its cited dive-watch credentials. Current SKX-inspired styling for everyday wear. A current Seiko alternative when dive capability matters more than matching the SKX case.
Movement 7S26; the cited comparison says it does not hack or hand-wind. 4R36; the cited comparison says it hacks and hand-winds. 4R36, according to the cited comparison.
Water and dive rating 200 m and ISO 6425, per the cited SKX007 reference. 100 m; not ISO-rated, per the cited comparison. 200 m, ISO-rated, with a screw-down crown, per the cited source.
Case Round; 42.5 mm in the cited SKX007 specification. SKX-inspired appearance. Cushion-shaped and visibly different from the SKX.
Price evidence No authoritative current sold-price range established. Seiko’s US catalog displayed $350–$395 for listed SRPD models when accessed October 7, 2026. These are catalog prices, not used-sale prices. No official current price comparison established.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the SKX if the original is the point

Paying extra is most defensible if you specifically want the discontinued SKX007: its 4 o’clock crown, design, history and original 200 m ISO-rated specification. That is a preference-led collector purchase, not a way to get the best movement convenience for the money. Assess the individual watch rather than assuming the premium guarantees value.

Choose the SRPD if you want the look for daily wear

Seiko’s US SKX-inspired Seiko 5 Sports catalog listed SRPD models, including the SRPD93, when accessed October 7, 2026. The 4R36 adds hacking and hand-winding compared with the SKX’s 7S26, but the SRPD is rated to 100 m and is not ISO-rated as a dive watch in the cited comparison. Seiko’s catalog prices are a reference for new listed models in the US, not evidence of what a used SKX should cost.

Choose the Turtle if a Seiko dive rating is the priority

The cited comparison identifies the Prospex Turtle as a 200 m, ISO-rated Seiko diver with a screw-down crown and 4R36 movement. Its cushion case is a distinctly different design, so it answers the dive-capability question rather than reproducing the SKX’s look.

What to check before buying a used SKX

  • Confirm the exact watch. The specifications above refer to the SKX007; do not assume every SKX reference or modified example is identical.
  • Assess condition and service history. A new-watch water-resistance rating does not establish that an older individual watch remains sealed or water-safe. No individual watch was inspected or pressure-tested for this article.
  • Check originality. Modifications can change what you are buying relative to an original example. SeikoMods’ guide documents work involving the case back, movement, dial, crown and hands; ask what has been changed and whether original parts are included.
  • Verify fit for replacement straps. The cited SKX007 specification gives a 22 mm lug width, a useful starting point when shopping for a strap. Confirm the fit of the exact strap, end links and spring bars against the watch.
  • Compare the actual asking price with the actual watch. The available sources do not establish a reliable current SKX resale premium, so avoid treating a retailer’s listing or a discontinued status as proof of fair market value.

For a watch that needs dependable water resistance, do not rely on its original rating alone; have the specific watch’s condition assessed and water resistance tested by a qualified watchmaker before exposing it to water.
