Is the Tudor Black Bay “Smiley” the Next Big Collector’s Watch?

The Black Bay Smiley stands out as an early generation with a distinctive dial and ETA movement. Here’s what that history means—and what limited market data can actually tell you.

The Tudor Black Bay “Smiley” has a credible case as a collectible early generation, but available evidence does not show that it is the next big collector’s watch—or that its prices will rise. Its appeal rests on its place in the Black Bay timeline, the ETA-to-manufacture movement transition, and a distinctive dial. Those are reasons collectors may seek one, not proof of future returns.

What “Smiley” means on a Black Bay

“Smiley” is an informal nickname for the curved “Self-Winding” text near six o’clock, which resembles a smile. It is associated with the early 79220 reference family: the burgundy-bezel 79220R, black-bezel 79220N, and blue-bezel 79220B. The nickname is not a precise official model name, so check the watch’s reference and dial rather than relying on a seller’s label.

For the ETA-powered versions, the dial cues include the Tudor rose at twelve and the curved inscription at six. In the later 79230 reference, the rose and curved text gave way to Tudor’s shield logo and straight inscriptions, according to Loupe This’s 79220N auction description.

Why collectors may care about this generation

The Smiley’s strongest collector argument is historical. Tudor says the original Black Bay launched in 2012 with a burgundy bezel and received the Manufacture Calibre treatment in 2016. That transition makes the 79220 family a recognizable early chapter in the modern Black Bay line.

Tudor Heritage Black Bay GMT Stainless Steel Automatic Mens Watch M79830RB-0001
  • 41mm steel case with polished and satin finish
  • Bidirectional rotatable bezel in steel with 24-hour graduated anodised aluminium disc
  • Self-winding mechanical movement with 70 hour power reserve

The change is visible in the specifications of the successor generation. Tudor’s 2016 Heritage Black Bay product material lists the 79230R, 79230B, and 79230N with the MT5602 manufacture movement, a 41 mm steel case, approximately 70 hours of power reserve, and 200 m water resistance. Auction descriptions identify 79220N Smiley examples with ETA caliber 2824.

This distinction may matter to collectors who value an earlier dial design or the first movement generation. It does not establish that an ETA movement is inherently more desirable, that a shorter production period guarantees scarcity, or that a premium will grow. Tudor’s Black Bay family page describes the launch and 2016 transition; it does not make a claim about future market value.

What the available prices do—and do not—show

Public price data in the cited snapshots is too limited and inconsistent to support an appreciation forecast. Asking prices are offers, not evidence that a buyer paid that amount, and the available sale sample is very small.

Reference and source Reported figure How to interpret it
79220N, TheWatchInfo 12 current seller quotes; asks from US$3,500. Median of US$2,541 across two confirmed auction sales. Seller quotes and auction results are different measures. The two-sale sample cannot establish a trend. Source
79220R, Leo Gallery Canada / Leowatchgallery, September 28, 2026 Eight sampled active asks; C$3,887 sample median and a C$3,273–C$5,646 asking range. These are mixed-condition asking prices, not completed sales; the publisher says the snapshot is not a historical trend. Do not treat these Canadian asks as directly comparable to US auction figures. There is a collector’s case for the Smiley as a recognizable first-generation Black Bay, but the available public price evidence does not yet establish a reliable upward trend.

How to assess a Smiley before paying a premium

Compare like with like. A 79220R should not be judged against a 79220N seller’s asking price or a different reference’s auction result. Establish the exact variant, then assess the individual watch.

  • Reference and dial: Verify the reference and bezel color, and confirm that the dial has the expected rose logo and curved wording for the claimed Smiley generation.
  • Condition: Inspect the case for polishing or damage and evaluate the dial, hands, bezel, and bracelet. Condition differences can make headline prices poor comparables.
  • Service history: Ask for service documentation and factor in any uncertainty about maintenance when comparing examples.
  • Completeness: Check what is included—box, papers, bracelet links, and original straps—and compare watches with similar sets.
  • Comparable sales: Look for recent completed sales of the same reference, not just current listings or asking prices for another colorway. The cited public data is limited, so avoid treating a small sample as a market benchmark.

A later 79230 can be a useful historical comparison for its movement and dial changes, but Tudor’s successor specifications do not establish a value hierarchy between it and a Smiley. Pay for the particular watch’s condition, documentation, completeness, and verified market comparables—not for an unsupported promise that one generation will outperform another.
