In one sense, yes: Tudor’s North Flag became a lower-profile model after the company discontinued it, with far less visible development than the Black Bay or Pelagos. But “forgotten” is a judgment, not a measurable fact. The 2015 watch was a distinctive, technically significant Tudor, and later coverage describes ongoing affection among owners and renewed collector interest.
What was the Tudor North Flag?
The North Flag was a 40 mm stainless-steel watch introduced in 2015. Its angular, 1970s-influenced case and integrated lugs set it apart from the more familiar heritage styling Tudor was known for. The design has been linked to the Ranger II, but the North Flag was a contemporary interpretation rather than a straightforward vintage reissue. Hodinkee’s launch report and Time+Tide’s review describe its black dial, yellow accents, integrated-lug case and black ceramic bezel ring.

Its layout included a date, a power-reserve display and a yellow running-seconds hand. That combination gave it a more technical, instrument-like character than a conventional three-hand heritage watch.
What made it technically notable?
The original North Flag was powered by caliber MT5621, which Hodinkee described at launch as Tudor’s first in-house manufacture caliber. Time+Tide’s 2021 retrospective lists a 70-hour power reserve and a silicon balance spring. Its display caseback also put the movement on view, an unusual emphasis for a model whose power-reserve indicator already made the mechanics part of the dial-side experience.

The technical package was not the only reason the watch stood out. The integrated design was a deliberate departure from Tudor’s strongest heritage associations, making the North Flag a more modern-looking alternative within the range.
Why do people call it “the forgotten Tudor”?
The phrase came to the fore in a 2019 Time+Tide article that asked whether the model had been overlooked. That framing reflects a reviewer’s perspective, not a measured industry consensus. The North Flag occupied a less obvious place beside Tudor’s heritage-led watches: it looked different from the models that were defining the brand’s public identity, and it did not develop into a similarly broad family.

- 41mm steel case with polished and satin finish
- Bidirectional rotatable bezel in steel with 24-hour graduated anodised aluminium disc
- Self-winding mechanical movement with 70 hour power reserve
Revolution Watch’s retrospective notes that the North Flag received no variations, line extensions or limited editions before leaving the collection, unlike the evolving Black Bay and Pelagos ranges. The article suggests its modern design and integrated bracelet may have made it harder to place beside Tudor’s better-established offerings. That is an interpretation, not a documented explanation from Tudor: the coverage does not provide company sales figures or an official reason for the discontinuation.
There is also a counterpoint to the “forgotten” label. Time+Tide’s 2021 retrospective describes continued affection among owners and growing attention in watch-community discussion after the model left the catalogue. That observation is anecdotal rather than a quantified collector survey, but it shows that reduced mainstream visibility does not mean the watch has no following.

Was the North Flag discontinued, and has it returned?
Retrospective coverage reports that Tudor discontinued the original North Flag. In 2021, Time+Tide said no successor had been announced. More recently, Precision Watches, a retailer, reported on September 2, 2026, that a new Northflag GMT had arrived under reference 9140G1A0U, with a GMT complication in place of the original’s power-reserve display: Precision Watches’ report. Hodinkee has also published hands-on coverage of a new Northflag.
The sources cited here do not include a Tudor product page or press release confirming the new model. Treat the Northflag GMT’s launch details as retailer-reported rather than as an official Tudor announcement.

What should you check if you are considering the original?
The original is a discontinued watch, so the specific example matters. Confirm its reference, condition, service history and whether it comes with its original documentation and accessories. Do not assume that discontinuation makes it an investment: the cited coverage establishes no current pricing trend or independently audited market data.
- Check the fit: the integrated lugs create a less conventional route for changing straps. Confirm compatibility before buying an accessory.
- Compare the exact watch: Black Bay and Pelagos are broad families, not single specifications. Compare the North Flag with a particular reference, including its functions and movement, rather than treating either range as uniform.
- Separate the generations: the original’s MT5621 and power-reserve display are not the same specification as the retailer-reported Northflag GMT.
So, is it the forgotten Tudor?
It is fair to call the North Flag a less visible and less developed branch of Tudor’s catalogue, especially next to the Black Bay and Pelagos. It is less fair to imply that collectors have abandoned it or that Tudor has publicly explained why it disappeared. Its unusual design and first in-house movement remain the reasons it is remembered by enthusiasts—and the reported GMT revival suggests the North Flag name still has contemporary relevance.
