Why is the Vulcain Cricket called the President’s Watch?
Vulcain says it introduced the Cricket in 1947 as an alarm wristwatch with a striking mechanism. The Swiss National Museum describes it as a state-of-the-art postwar alarm watch that became known as the President’s Watch. Together, the accounts explain how the model acquired its presidential reputation.
Vulcain’s product page calls it “A world first,” but that priority claim is the brand’s own framing, not a fact independently established by the museum’s account. The museum does independently support the watch’s historical standing as a postwar alarm watch and its association with the presidential nickname.
Which presidents are associated with the Cricket?
Vulcain and the Swiss National Museum identify the same four U.S. presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson. That overlap gives the nickname a well-supported historical core. The available accounts do not establish the provenance of each individual watch or how frequently each president wore one, so it is more precise to say the Cricket is associated with these presidents than to claim a documented wearing history for every example.
The presidential identity continued in Vulcain’s later products. Its chronology records an anniversary model for Barack Obama in 2009 and the launch of the 50’s Presidents Watch in 2010. The museum also recounts a later gift of a President’s Watch to Soviet reformer Mikhail Gorbachev. These references show how the identity was carried forward; they do not establish that Obama or Gorbachev regularly wore a Cricket.
What makes the Cricket’s alarm distinctive?
The Cricket is a mechanical wristwatch with an alarm complication, the feature at the heart of its original appeal. Unlike a simple time-only watch, it is designed to sound an alarm; Vulcain’s current Cricket President Black page specifies a hand-wound V10 movement and gives an alarm duration of approximately 20 seconds. Those details apply to that particular variant, not automatically to every Cricket.
What the current Cricket President Black offers
Vulcain’s reviewed product page describes the Cricket President Black as a limited edition of 100 pieces. It lists a polished 316L steel case, 5 ATM water resistance and an anti-reflective domed sapphire crystal. The hand-wound V10 alarm movement is listed with 25 jewels, 165 components, two barrels, a 52-hour power reserve and an alarm duration of approximately 20 seconds. These are the specifications on the Black model’s page; edition status and availability can change.
Vulcain’s homepage lists Cricket President, Cricket Classique and Cricket Tradition as collections. That confirms their place in the brand’s catalog, but does not establish stock at a particular retailer or in a particular market.

Vintage Cricket or current Cricket President?
A vintage Cricket is chiefly a route into the watch’s mid-century history; a current Cricket President offers the alarm complication in a contemporary product. Which makes more sense depends on whether the priority is a period example or a modern model. For a vintage watch, the specific piece’s provenance, condition and service history matter; the historical association alone cannot verify any one watch’s past.
The cited sources do not establish comparable prices, vintage condition grades, long-term reliability or present availability. Assess those points for the exact watch and seller rather than treating them as settled across the Cricket family.
