The Hublot Classic Fusion Italia Independent is a 2017 limited-edition chronograph collection built around an unusual design choice: archival tailoring fabrics appear on the dial and strap. Hublot developed it with Italia Independent and Lapo Elkann, drawing on textiles selected with Rubinacci. The concept is distinctive, but the watches are not one uniform specification: case material, edition size and historical price differ by reference.
What is the Hublot Classic Fusion Italia Independent?
It is a collaboration between Hublot, Italia Independent and its founder and artistic director Lapo Elkann. Hublot said the partnership began in 2014; for the 2017 collection, the collaborators selected 1970s tartans from the Rubinacci fabric archive and incorporated textiles into the dials and straps of 45 mm chronographs. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie also identifies houndstooth and tweed among the fabrics used.
The textile is the collection’s defining idea, not simply a color accent. It brings a recognizable tailoring material onto a sportier chronograph format. Hublot described the project as a meeting of its technical experimentation, Rubinacci’s tailoring and Elkann’s style; that is the brand’s framing, rather than an independent performance assessment.
What makes the editions different?
The 2017 collection included six watches across titanium, black ceramic and King Gold, according to Fratello’s 2022 account. The available records describe particular versions, not a single specification sheet for all six. The figures below should therefore stay attached to their named edition.

Fratello’s 2022 article gives original-price figures of CHF 14,300 for titanium, CHF 15,300 for black ceramic and CHF 33,300 for King Gold. These collection-level figures are close to, but not identical with, the record-level prices above; they are separate source figures and should not be treated as exact prices for every reference.
How does the fabric change the design?
It shifts the watch away from a conventional monochrome chronograph without changing the basic proposition of a large, round Classic Fusion case with chronograph functions. The textile connects the dial to clothing and gives the watch a more conspicuous, dressed-up character than a plain dial would. Because the fabric appears on the strap as well, the design coordinates the two surfaces rather than using the dial as an isolated flourish.

That visual premise also sets the main taste question: do you want a patterned watch to be a visible part of an outfit, or do you prefer a dial that recedes? The sources establish the use of archival fabrics, but do not provide independent wrist observations about how prominent each pattern looks at everyday viewing distance, how the registers read against each dial, or how the strap feels. Those points depend on the exact pattern and an in-person inspection, so they should not be mistaken for verified hands-on findings.
How large is it, and what should you check on wrist?
The cited examples are 45 mm chronographs. The GPHG record gives the ceramic reference 521.CM.2706.NR.ITI17 a thickness of 13.05 mm; the King Gold entry gives its diameter but does not state thickness. A 45 mm diameter is a substantial case size, but fit depends on wrist shape, lug geometry and personal preference, none of which is established by the listed dimensions alone.

- Look at the chronograph registers under the lighting in which you expect to wear it, especially if the fabric pattern has strong contrast.
- Try the strap for flexibility and comfort; the available records identify materials but do not establish feel or long-term wear.
- Consider whether the textile pattern works with the clothes you actually wear, both tailored and casual.
What did it cost, and what is it worth now?
The available prices are historical indicated or original prices, not current asking prices or resale valuations. GPHG lists CHF 14,167 excluding VAT for the 100-piece ceramic reference 521.CM.2706.NR.ITI17. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie lists CHF 33,330 for a 50-piece King Gold variant. Fratello’s 2022 account provides the separate original-price figures for titanium, black ceramic and King Gold above. None of these establishes what a particular watch costs today.
Current availability, condition and market value are not established here. Fratello’s roughly €9,000–€12,000 estimate in 2022 was its editorial estimate for favored models at that time, not a current market guide. For a pre-owned example, identify the exact reference and verify provenance, condition, service history and included papers with the seller before relying on a price or committing to a purchase.

Is the Hublot Classic Fusion Italia Independent worth buying?
There is no evidence here to support a universal buy-or-pass verdict or a present-day value judgment. The collection is most compelling on its own terms if the tailoring-material concept is the reason you want it and you have confirmed that the specific pattern, case material and size suit you. If you are comparing examples, treat the edition-specific specifications and historical prices separately; the ceramic reference and King Gold version are not interchangeable.
