A 2024 study found fluorine-related evidence in some tested watch bands, but it does not establish what is in every band on the market or quantify a wearer’s exposure. When choosing a replacement, also confirm that it fits your exact watch model and connector.
What did the watch-band study find?
A 2024 peer-reviewed study analyzed 22 watch bands across brands and price points. The American Chemical Society reported that 15 of the 22 had total fluorine concentrations above 1%, a finding the study treated as suggestive of fluoroelastomer use. The researchers also tested for 20 PFAS; PFHxA was the most frequently detected compound, with results ranging from below the limit of detection to 16,662 ng/g in the tested bands.
These are findings about the study’s samples, not every band from a brand or model. The study reported PFHxA readily extractable from the surfaces of tested fluoroelastomer bands, while noting limited knowledge about dermal absorption and the need for more exposure research. Detection alone does not establish a wearer’s dose, absorption during use, or a specific health outcome.

What labels should I check?
Start with the exact band’s materials. “Fluoroelastomer” and “FKM” are useful screening terms because the cited study investigated fluoroelastomer watch bands. A label alone does not disclose every additive or determine the band’s exposure profile.

Be cautious with broad descriptions such as “rubber” or a bare “PFAS-free” badge. Ask the seller or manufacturer what the finished band is made of and what evidence supports any PFAS claim.
Is a nylon watch band PFAS-free?
Not necessarily. Nylon is a material category worth investigating as a replacement option, but the word “nylon” by itself does not establish that the finished band is free of PFAS. Check the exact model’s materials and ask for product-specific testing documentation.

How do I evaluate a PFAS-free claim?
A useful report should connect test results to the band you are considering. Before relying on a claim, ask:
- Which exact product was tested? Check whether the report identifies the model, SKU, or batch and whether it tested the finished band.
- What was tested? Find out which PFAS compounds were included and whether the testing also included a total-fluorine screen.
- How was it tested? Look for the test methods and laboratory information rather than an unexplained badge.
- What were the detection limits? “Not detected” refers to the tested substances under the stated method and limits; it is not automatically proof that no PFAS could be present.
- What parts were included? Ask whether the test covered the complete finished band, including relevant components and finishes.
A total-fluorine result and a targeted PFAS panel answer different questions. Total-fluorine screening measures an overall fluorine signal; it does not identify every fluorinated compound. Targeted testing checks specified compounds, so substances outside the panel may not be reported.

How do I compare band claims and fit?
Manufacturer claims should remain distinct from independently verified evidence.
